Kerala is endowed with some of the finest
beaches the country has to offer to tourists who
come from all over the world. Yet, not much
attention has been paid to creating
infrastructure and recreational facilities for
those who throng the beaches.
The Kappil beach and backwaters, at the
confluence of sea, river and backwater, eight
km north of the Papanasam beach in Varkala, is
a secluded spot. The beach, despite being a
favourite destination of tourists, both domestic
and foreign, who prefer privacy, is yet to get
requisite facilities and attention from the
tourism authorities and the local bodies.
After the crescent-shaped Lighthouse, Eve's and
Grove beaches in Kovalam and the Papanasam
and the Thiruvamabdy beaches in Varkala, the
Kappil beach is the favourite of foreign tourists.
The beach is a getaway owing to its location and
scenic beauty, ideal for viewing the sunset and
taking evening walks. The Kappil river offers a
tranquil boat cruise.
Kappil is a favourite place of the National Cadet
Corps and regular parasailing and adventure
water sports activities are held there. The
Priyadarshini Boat Club, functioning under the
Thiruvananthapuram District Tourism
Promotion Council, offers boating on the
backwaters.
Development works
Sensing an influx of tourists and the huge
potential, Kerala Tourism has now stepped in to
landscape the Kappil beach and take up other
works.
The Rs.54.56-lakh work has been cleared by the
Working Group on Plan Schemes of Kerala
Tourism that met in the State capital recently.
Pathways and paved areas, rain shelters, a
police assistance booth, a toilet block and a food
court will be built under the project.
“Administrative sanction had been given and
the work will be executed by the Harbour
Engineering Department,” a tourism official
said.
A tourism circuit linking the Ponnumthuruthu
island, 12 km south of Varkala on the
Anchuthengu backwaters, the Anjengo
(Anchuthengu) fort built by the Portuguese in
1695, the Chilakkoor beach located near Varkala
town, the Thiruvambady beach, the
Janaradhana Swamy temple, which is over 2,000
years old, and the Sivagiri Math can further
attract tourists.
The Thiruvambady beach, or the black sand
beach, adjacent to North Cliff and one km from
the Papanasam beach, is an ideal place for those
seeking peace and solitude.
