This Veniliornis (sanguineas) woodpecker, the Blood-coloured Woodpecker, is one of the 4 of that subfamily found in Guyana and one of the 2 which are Guiana Shield endemics although this one does not occur further west than Guyana. While limited in range, it can be seen along the coast of Guyana. This stunning photo by Kester Clarke bears witness to its delightful appearance.
