We recently visited the Lorraine American Cemetery in Saint Avold, France. There are approximately 10,500 American soldiers resting here. A visit to a place like this gives one a perspective into the sacrifices that our soldiers endure to keep others safe. Words fail me when I try to describe the reverence that I feel while walking these hallowed grounds. Respect, thanks and blessings to our veterans

The second day with our new crew was the first day to move the boat. It had been raining ALOT for the last few days and the Saar River was nearing flood stage. Our very first move with the new crew was to turn our flat bottom boat around to the south without going over the spillway/waterfall a few hundred meters down stream. We created a plan and executed it to perfection! This was going to be a good group to travel with. Everyday there are challenges and major decisions to be made, example….Do we have Armagnac (Norman Apple Brandy) with lunch? It was kind of cold after all. This section of the Saar River Valley is beautiful, in the next 2 days we passed through the villages of Sarrable, Mittershiem and Houillon on our way south.

Our new group of travelers Diane, Denise, Vaughn, Barb and Karl arrived on the afternoon of October 7 to begin our adventure. We start with a toast of Cre’mont de’ Alsace and then an afternoon of strolling around Sarregumine taking in some of the sights. When you are with a bunch of gardeners of course you must take in some gardens. Sarregumines is a cute city of about 20,000 people along the Saar river right on the German boarder. Dinner was at the La Casino restaurant adjacent to the marina. The next day Rick and Vaughn head up to Sarrbrucken Germany to pick up a van for a day trip to the American Cemetery Lorraine in the near by town of St Avold. Upon arrival at the cemetery I was stuck by an overwhelming sense of reverence for the soldiers that lost their lives liberating this part of France. The cemetery is meticulously maintained and is a fitting tribute to these American soldiers.

Carla and I are cleaning up the boat for our next guests and guess what happens…..Kayak races….We watched as a crew dropped a hundred or so kayaks under the bridge yesterday….I thought it was a strange place for winter storage….but what do I know

Carla and I are in Sarregumines France where we said goodbye our dear friends and first week crew. We promote these trips for adventurous people. And our first group certainly was just that, adventurous. We sent them on their way back to the states with hugs and a hearty Bonjour. But we can’t help but be a little sad to see them go.
Monday we welcome a new group of intrepid travelers. I am confident that we will have our own set of fun and interesting challenges traveling through the French countryside.

Interesting windy conditions have kept me very busy while steering in and out of the locks, tunnels and boat lift. I really haven’t had much time for photography. I am thankful that Kristen has been doing an amazing job documenting our trip.
