Looking through some of my favorite national park photos and came across these from glacier national park.

We visited mid July two years ago and i still remember vividly how beautiful every single area was. We spent 5 days and hiked 65 miles through the park & wished I had much more time there. In mid July, a few hikes were still closed due to the weather so we couldn’t do everything we wanted, but just means we’ll have to go back!

1. Cracker lake
2-3. Ptarmigan lake and tunnel
4. Highline trail to the grinnell glacier overlook
5. Cracker lake
6. Hidden Lake
7. Lake McDonald and trail of the cedars to avalanche gorge

summer hiking in the eastern sierras with our pup mabel 🏔️

We took her on the little lakes valley to gem lakes trail in the Inyo National forest-it was 7.5 miles with about 1000ft elevation gain. I’d consider this hike relatively easy especially with breaks to enjoy the beautiful views.

We brought our chairs, backpacks, hat & shirts and rec trek pants & had the most perfect day.

Exploring Cusco. There is more to see in the Cusco area than Machu Picchu:
1, 3: Exploring the Maras salt mines was fun to see and a short day trip from the city center.
2, 4. We also explored Pisac and these ruins on the same tour as the Maras Moray salt mine. We took the super sacred valley tour and learned more about the history of the area.
5: Sacsayhuaman— it’s amazing to think of how large these stones are and how difficult it would have been to lift these giant stones and make these walls 😳
6: The city of Cusco is beautiful and has so many pretty streets like these!

What else did you see when you were in Cusco?

Salkantay Trek day 5, the finale 💫

Machu Picchu is commonly the highlight for many people who travel to Cusco and for good reason. Both treks — Salkantay and Inca trails finish their adventure with a visit to Machu Picchu and it’s a feeling of both excitement and awe that this place exists surrounded by mountains.

We took the bus from aguas calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu, then took route 1 and walked around. We decided to also add on the climb to Huayna Picchu which was well worth it. You can see Machu Picchu from the top! The hike up is about 1 mile but it straight up (you can see the mountain in the first pic, the tall one in the back) and has some sections that are very narrow and steep.

From the top people say Machu Picchu looks like a condor—can you see it?

Salkantay day 3 & 4:
These days were different than the classic Salkantay Trek due to recent landslides that completely covered the original trail for day 3.

We followed along the river on the opposite side of the original trail and stopped at a passion fruit spot and a coffee spot. It also involved walking through muddy landslides that were still passable but not so fun.

Day 4 continued along the river towards aguas calientes, a small town that’s only accessible by train or by walking in—no cars can get to it! The first picture is of the beautiful town of aguas calientes. We shortened our hiking this day significantly by taking a car from our tent to hidroelectrica, and then walked the train tracks to aguas calientes. We were warned by our guides that the hike to hidroelectrica would have been too muddy and dangerous to hike the whole thing.

These two changes to these two days were pretty sad & disappointing—part of me feels I didn’t really complete the whole trek since a big chunk of it was changed. But still enjoyed the views and the company along the way.

Salkantay Trek Day 2 🏔️

The hike towards Salkantay Pass, notably the most difficult part of the Salkantay trek in Peru. Salkantay is the second highest mountain in the Cusco area and means “savage mountain”. Although the actual mountain is at 20,574’ the pass climbs to 15,026’ and the full day 2 mileage hike is about 13.6 miles.
This view is quickly seen after leaving the soraypampa camping area and the hike up to the pass is full of scenic views.

Salkantay Mountain 🏔️
The main event of the Salkantay Trek some (including I) may say.
This was the highlight of day 2 where we finally got to the highest elevation of the trek-15,080 ft.

The biggest thing I learned about hiking in high altitude is take small steps but keep moving and don’t stop too long when you take breaks! It’s so tempting to wait until your heart rate drops back to normal but at high altitude that typically doesn’t happen as quickly as you’re used to. Just keep moving!

Salkantay Trek Day 2 🏔️
This was the most difficult day- we had an early start and a long but fulfilling day out on the trail.

We climbed up to Salkantay Pass to 15,090 ft (started at 12,631 that morning) in about 3ish miles. Luckily we had these amazing views on our way up that just kept getting better.

A moment for the main event - Laguna Humantay. This was my favorite part of day 1 of the Salkantay Trek. On our climb up the clouds were out and covering part of Humantay. As we got closer, the clouds started to thin out and then the sun came out and gave us the bluest blue lake ✨
Maybe the best way to start out our trek!

Salkantay Trek Day 1 continued.

This was the hike up towards Humantay Lake and was a way for us to acclimate to the altitude. The hike itself was beautiful, climbing up through meadows and wildflowers with 1200 ft of elevation gain in about a mile. It was a wonderful start to our trek!

Day 1: The start of the Salkantay Trek- a 5 day, 46 mile hike to Machu Picchu from Challakancha.
This first part was our hike to Soraypampa, our first campsite of the night and was a nice ease in to our trek. We did a day hike to Humantay lake (which I’ll share in a bit).

A popular alternative to the Inca Trail and for good reason, we hiked through alpine landscapes, to jungle rainforests, and ended at the mountainous green landscape around Machu Picchu.

I’ll share our day to day journey in the days to come!
We used the Salkantay Trekking company and were grateful for guides to help us navigate landslides & unplanned changes to the hike.

I’m not sure that I’ll ever get over these colors.

The Rainbow Mountain/Vinicunca in Peru is one of the most beautiful but also intriguing places we’ve visited. It was recently popularized between 2012- 2015 when snow melted and revealed all the colors hiding underneath. I think social media made it as popular and commercialized as it is now & im grateful for it as we wouldn’t have been able to visit it otherwise!

It’s about 3-4 hours away from Cusco and the altitude was higher than we have other experienced or hiked at, at 17,100 ft above sea level at our final destination. We did this as our last adventure after the Salkantay trek and luckily had acclimated pretty well which made it much easier than our other hikes. It was about 3 miles round trip with ~800 ft of elevation gain but the views throughout and at the end were worth it! We were lucky that there was no rain and the colors really were this vivid!

Skyline Trail in Mt Rainier, one of my favorites and super popular for good reason!

We started our hike early in the morning to try to avoid crowds and were so glad we did as we avoided any clouds covering up mount rainier as the day went by (and even though no clouds are pictured, by the time the hike was over there were so many clouds)!

Mirador Las Torres- probably the most known spot along the W trek in Chile’s Torres Del Paine National park and for good reason. I’m pretty sure I think about this spot and trip at least once a day.

This photo was taken right before it started to rain/snow/hail all at once and as it was our first day in the park, we quickly learned how much the weather changes within a few minutes. Don’t let the sun fool you!

It’s been about a year since our trip to Chilean Patagonia and I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. So I will post some of my favorites over the next few days :)

This photo was taken on day 3 between Refugio de los cuerros and Paine grande. I remember the day started off sunny, windy with intermittent drizzling and ended with a full on downpour of hail, wind, snow and all the in betweens. We were drenched by the time we made it to Paine grande but boy those views were way worth it.

Some of my favorite shots from our trip to Plitvice national park last October.

We really loved how accessible the area was as it’s mostly boardwalks and there are various routes you can choose depending on how long you want to hike for! And boat and bus shuttles if you don’t want to walk for very long but still want the views 😍

We started at Entrance 1 and took a combination of the C and K route. The cool thing about the park is all the many routes you can choose from, varying from short to long and from your starting routes (entrance 1, 2, or P3). It took a while for us to figure out what the best entrance is but I felt like starting from entrance 1 allowed us to get into the main views of the park earlier to beat the crowds on the boardwalks. Starting at entrance 1 allows you to start at the lower lakes, take the ferry across lake kozjak, and then continue on the path around the upper lakes. We went about 7.5 miles on various paths and viewpoints.

As it was the off season, we started around 8:20 and there were still plenty of people along the trail but definitely few enough to still get some of the trail to ourselves. Got wayyyy more crowded as the day went on so would definitely recommend coming early!

The one downside of coming early is the sun wasn’t quite up high enough to turn the water as teal so we did a small part of the beginning of the trail again to get back to those viewpoints with the sun right above us.

Views of oahu from the sky 🚁

As I only had a few days of my vacation/PTO time left, I spent 3 days in Oahu. To try to see as much of the island as possible, we booked a doors off helicopter tour and wow those views were 😍😍😍.

All of these photos were taken with an iPhone, still have to upload and go through allll my camera pics.

Full post of all the places we went and ate at coming soon!

We traveled to Dubrovnik in October & I couldn’t believe how charming the town was!
We spent a few days wandering around and in the town walls and I loved every bit of it—even all the staircases that made us very very warm 😅

Our favorite things we did:
- walked the city walls from Pile gate or Ploce gate
- lovrijenac fortress
- minceta tower
- cable car up to panorama
- rectors palace

My tip: be prepared for lots and lots of stairs and try to go at a time when the cruise ship folks haven’t come by yet if you can, as you’ll have lots of tours on the walls walking with you. We went towards the afternoon for the walls and were able to be alone for a bit!

Snaps along the way to the top of Montenegro.
Hard to believe these views were just from a single hike as the landscape changed so drastically!

Bobotov K*k is the highest point in Montenegro and is about 6.1 miles with 3,000 ft of elevation gain and a little technically demanding as there are cables off mountain cliff sides and lots of rocks that are easy to slip on while climbing. Highly recommend doing this hike if the weather is good and it’s not too windy as holding on to a cable off the tallest mountain in Montenegro is maybe not the best idea when there are strong winds. This was done in October 2023.

Yosemite with my pup Mabel.

We’ve been to Yosemite many times, but never with our pup Mabel. Traveling with a dog is often a bit more difficult, but we were able to find plenty of things to do in Yosemite & Mabel enjoyed every part of it! We even found a pup friendly lodging at Yosemite, about an hour from the park. Below are all the trails we did with Mabel & some other options if you find yourself visiting Yosemite with your paw friend! In general, all paved trails and developed areas allow dogs unless specified!

- Tunnel view overlook
- Bridal veil fall
- Lower Yosemite falls
- Mirror lake
- Cooks meadow/sentinel bridge

(we stayed around the yosemite valley area during our visit to the park given road closures & proximity to our lodging.)

other trails we didnt visit:
- wawona meadow loop
- chowchilla mountain road
- four mile fire road
- eleven mile fire road
- Carlon road from trailhead to hodgdon meadow
- old big oak flat road from hodgdon meadow to tuolumne grove parking lot
