GoOrkney owner Gordon Deans meeting the first of our Skibo Castle guests this year at Skaill House yesterday before an amazing land and air tour of Orkney in glorious sunshine. Our very bespoke itineraries, tailored specifically to our guests included a fly past the Old Man of Hoy, Scapa Flow, our UNESCO sites and a bit of island hopping. Thanks to Skaill House, Tommy Sinclair and our partners at PDG for supporting us to make this tour package so incredible. A great find today on a GoOrkney tailored tour with some wonderful guests at Yesnaby!
Rare and beautiful….the Scottish primrose (Primula scotica) is unique to one small area of Orkney’s Atlantic coastline and sometimes on the northern coast of Scotland but nowhere else in the world! This tiny flowering plant, no bigger than your wee fingernail, grows in our harsh windswept coastal environment, close to the cliff edge. Catch it soon before it fades for another year and as with all our amazing flora and fauna, you’re welcome to look but please leave for others to enjoy.

They are back!
Puffins are one of the most popular birds to see in Orkney. From their small and colourful appearance to their almost clown like antics, it’s no wonder these birds are a must-see for bird lovers and tourists.
At GoOrkney we love to get our guests up close. Literally giving them a birds eye view.

5 interesting puffin facts to help you get to know this quirky little seabird.

• Puffins are impressive swimmers
• Their bills change colour throughout the year
• They rarely change mates
• Puffins have specialised beaks to help them fish
• Puffins only weigh in around 1lb

This tour will take you on a journey back through 5000 years of history. Set within a hauntingly beautiful ceremonial landscape, you can explore the Ring of Brodgar, a site of ritual and ceremony, and walk among the Standing Stones of Stenness, thought to be the oldest stone circle in the British Isles. Standing up to 6 metre high, these incredible megaliths sit at the start of the Brodgar peninsula and all its ancient sites beyond, a landscape that holds a treasure trove of natural, archaeological, and cultural interest.
We will then meander around the 'world class' Skara Brae, a prehistoric village which is remarkable for its age and for the quality of its preservation.
Next stop will be to visit the Cliffs of Yesnaby, showcasing Orkney's Atlantic and often 'wild' coastline before stepping forward to the 20th Century with a panoramic drive along the shores of Scapa Flow, a natural sheltered harbour, infamous for its role in both World Wars, before heading to the Churchill Barriers where you can marvel at the inspirational WWII Italian Chapel.
Finally we will return to Kirkwall, the capital 'city' of Orkney, for a visit to St Magnus Cathedral, built by Vikings and known as 'The light of the North'.
Along the route you will learn about and experience much of the local wildlife, landscape and heritage in the very knowledgeable and entertaining hands off our experienced and accredited guide, (if I say so myself!) with time for photo stops. Let us take care of you, just relax and enjoy your short visit to Orkney.

I look forward to meeting and showing you around our beautiful island.
Gordon

Whilst we were fortunate here in Orkney to have missed the worst effects of the recent winter storms, their impact has still been felt, particularly along Orkney’s western flank. Here, the mighty Atlantic Ocean with her powerful waves has removed thousands of tonnes of sand and stones, exposing the Devonian sandstone bedrock. Not unusual to see such rock formations along our coastline but these newly uncovered areas, having been protected from the weathering effects of the sea and biological growth are putting on a wonderfully artistic and fossilised display. Orkney’s natural environment, like our incredible culture and history, never ceases to amaze and inspire. Why not experience our incredible treasures for yourself.
