Ranawana Royal Temple, also known as Ranawana Purana Raja Maha Viharaya, is a Buddhist temple tucked away in the serene surroundings of Pilimathalawa, near Kandy, Sri Lanka. Despite being lesser-known, it's gaining popularity among both locals and tourists. Located about 10.3 km from Kandy, it's easily accessible via the Ranawana temple road, which starts from the Kiribathkumbura Highway Museum Junction on the Colombo-Kandy Highway.
The temple offers a tranquil atmosphere with some modern amenities, including the country's tallest walking Buddha statue, attracting visitors from far and wide. What makes temple unique is its blend of traditional asceticism with contemporary features. As you stroll along the temple grounds, you'll encounter life-sized sculptures depicting the life of Buddha and other significant events in Buddhist history. These sculptures are strategically placed along the pathway, creating an immersive experience reminiscent of ancient times.
At the summit of the rock, you'll find a remarkable giant Buddha statue in a walking posture, a to behold and the only one of its kind in the area. The path to the top of the rock is relatively easy to navigate, with no steep climbs, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels. You can expect to spend around two hours exploring the temple grounds and taking in the serene ambiance.
For those traveling from Colombo or Kandy, reaching the temple is convenient, with easy access from the main road. Look out for a large signboard near the Pilimathalawa railway crossing, just 1 km away from the main road. If you're using public transport, you can get off at the Pilimathalawa railway crossing and find three-wheelers (taxis) readily available, or you can opt for a leisurely walk to the temple grounds.
