PART 6 (10 - 16 May 2020) UP TO THE KUNENE MOUTH
With Namibia Scientific Society and Indongo Toyota. The last 2 days found us winding our way south through the Khumib and Huarusib valleys. The trip ended in Sesfontein. Tomorrow we head up with a new group. Brilliant.

PART 5 (10 - 16 May 2020) UP TO THE KUNENE MOUTH
With Namibia Scientific Society and Indongo Toyota. We started heading back south, through the dunes, and into the Marienfluss and Hartmanns Valley. Desolate, unpopulated areas. Only a few Himbas left due to the drought.

PART 4 (10 - 16 May 2020) UP TO THE KUNENE MOUTH
With Namibia Scientific Society and Indongo Toyota. One of the more challenging days, as we crossed the Kunene dune fields from west to east. Powder soft dunes. And mesmerising glimpses of the Kunene valley. We camped that evening in a dry river wash, a short walk down to the river.

PART 3 (10 - 16 May 2020) UP TO THE KUNENE MOUTH
With Namibia Scientific Society and Indongo Toyota The 3rd day was a long haul to the Kunene mouth. Passing Angra Fria( the cold bay), the wreck site of the Dunedin Star, Bosluis Baai, and eventually, the Kunene river-mouth. The mist pulled in and the tide was low. Another brilliant drive on a deserted coastline.

PART 2 (10 - 16 May 2020) UP TO THE KUNENE MOUTH
With Namibia Scientific Society and Indongo Toyota.By 9am we were heading north again, stopping in at the wrecks along the way. We only did around 150km, passing the mouths of the Huarusib and Khumib, as well as Rocky Point and the deserted Sarusas amethyst mine.

PART 1 (10 - 16 May 2020) UP TO THE KUNENE MOUTH
A brilliant trip with friends from the Namibia Scientific Society. The drive up the Skeleton Coast National Park to the Kunene Mouth has to be one of the most spectacular routes in Namibia. First day's drive around ± 420km (tar/salt/gravel) from Swakop up to Möwe Bay, where the road ends and the track starts. We camped on the beach. Not much wind. Indongo Toyota

The last of the ANGOLA CHRONICLES (later today we head up to the Kunene mouth/Kaokoland for 7 days)
After the Curoca river stuckness, we stopped off at the dry lake Arco(Arch). and then we wound our way round, back into the dunes. South west Angola remains one of the awesome corners in Africa.

STUCK IN ANGOLA (the unstuckness) PART 2 -March 2020
For every stuck, there is an unstuck. Mostly. After entering the Curoca, we headed downstream, zig zagging through the muddy riverbed. We were 3 vehicles in total, a Cruiser, Ford Ranger and my Hilux. Things were going well. Until they weren't. And this is where the dog and the donkey come in to play.

STUCK IN ANGOLA (mid-March 2020) PART 1
And the sand turned to jelly. It can do that. It happens. Call it bad luck. Call it complacency. Call it poor judgment. Call it what you want. I call it stuck. Well stuck. One of my better stucknesses. A stuck so stuck, it took an air jack, a Ford Ranger, a Land Cruiser, winch, kinetic rope, 13 Mucubal tribesmen, a donkey and a dog to get us out of this one. It all took place in the soggy Curoca River, on the northern edge of the Iona dune fields, South west Angola. Part of a week long exploration trip into the most northern reaches of the Namib desert.

Part 3 - The Weather Station Mission - (The Amazing Drive Home) - After leaving the Conception Water weather station, it was a short drive down the rusted rail tracks to Conception Bay. The tide was perfect. An incredible, desolate beach drive all the way back to Walvis Bay via the Shawnee shipwreck, and Sandwich Harbour. No one around, no tracks, no problems. Perfect. Thanks again to Peter Bridgeford for the good times and great company!

Part 2 of the Weather Station Mission. We arrived late afternoon, 150km south of Walvis. Peter Bridgeford shacked up in the old morgue. I had my roof top top tent.Fire, braai, wine. Sunset. Done. Next morning we started cleaning all the instruments on the weather station. Removed a partial crows nest from the raised solar panel, cleaned and checked all other instruments. Around 10:30 we set off back to Walvis, via the train line and the beach.....

Its been a while - but we have been busy. Last week, myself and Peter Bridgeford went down to clean and service the remote weather station (monitored by the University of Basel, Switzerland) at Conception Water, 150km south of Walvis Bay. In through the dunes, out along the coast. A 2 day trip through the Namib Sand Sea.In the name of science.

After the cycle trip, spent 4 days with Go Gravel photo safaris. On a recce expedition into the unknown.

Done - two weeks after leaving Walvis Bay, Kate M Leeming and the Karibu Namibia support team rolled into Oranjemund. Kate became the first person to cycle from the Kunene river mouth to the Orange river mouth, on beaches, over rocks and dunes all along the coastal stretch of the Namib desert. Brilliant! What a trip!

From Lüderitz we headed south via the Rotkop gate into the Sperrgebiet. Special permits arranged, and into an area not seen by many. Weird plants, alien landscapes. Thanks Jimmy Marais of Karibu Namibia for the great opportunity to be part of the support team for Kate M Leeming 's rcord breaking expedition.

Dodging the headlands by heading back into the dunes - constant comms between the Karibu Namibia support team and Kate M Leeming made life easier as we often had to split up to get around various obstacles. The support vehicles and Kate would often loose sight of one another, though thanks to Radio Electronic cc for the VHF radios and handsets, we never had any problems.

For the rest of June, we joined the Karibu Safari Namibia support team for Kate M Leeming who was cycling down from the Kunene River mouth to the Orange River mouth through the Namib Desert. We met up with Kate, Kasimir Zierl (videographer)and Elago Namalambo Negumbo (Karibu Safaris) north of Meob Bay, and slowly wound our way down to Oranjemund via Luderitz. We stayed on the coastal stretches as much as possible, using the dune sand to build tracks over rocks to allow the vehicles through. Also a big thank you to Radio Electronic cc for the radio equipment and Minaqua prepared Water for keeping us all hydrated.

Turns out June was a bit of a crazy month. Kicked it off in the beginning with a five day fishing trip down to Meob Bay for Voetspore Safaris and friends. Catch and release, with a few for the pot. Mostly steenbras. Spent 1 night camping in the desert on the way down, and 3 nights at the rustic, yet extremely comfortable tented camp. Hot showers, flush toilets, great kitchen facilities. Got back to Walvis Bay, unpacked, repacked and left the following day. Back into the desert......

Last week of the 3 week Dorsland trek expedition with Voetspore Safaris. Visited Lubango and Humpata where the trekkers last stood until 1928, when they crossed back over the Kunene. Wild camp at Tundavala gorge and in a blue gum forest. Next stop Namibe, on the coast.
