Our Story
Based on the Mornington Peninsula, I mainly focus on the breeding side of poultry. In 2018, I will focus on African Geese, Apricot Trout & Saxony Indian Runners, Rouen Ducks, Pearl Guinea Fowl, Blue & Black Bearded Silkies and a Bearded Pekin Project. I travel all over Victoria for my poultry to gather different genetics to improve my birds. My original Apricot Indian Runners are Allan Hales (SA) birds, which are Kym Rumball's Lines (SA). I have added 3 whites (East Gippsland) & 1 Trout (Pakenham) to improve the line. My original Rouen’s are from Akers Flock (Vic). My Guinea Fowl genes come from New South Wales and East Gippsland. My original African goose was purchased from Euroa Poultry Auction. Using a Chinese gander I am now creating my own line of Africans. In 2018 my offspring will be 87.5%, 75% & 62.5% African. In 2018 I have also added a Chinese cross, purchased from East Gippsland with a dewlap to my 75% ladies. My Blue and Black Silkies are both bearded and non bearded. Their genes come from Bendigo, East Gippsland, Cardinia and Martin Wade (NSW). Since 2009 I have been working on a project chicken, which is to bred a beard in to a Pekin. I have black bearded pekins and white beard pekins. My original Black Pekins hens were purchased from Wangaratta and crossed with my white bearded rooster. My white bearded pekins started from 5 or 6 cross bred bantams hens which had the appearance of a pekin, however they had a long neck, white beak and a beard. I was given a pekin rooster which I put to the hens producing whites, buff, blues and blacks. As I had three large pens, I decided to keep the Blues in one pen, blacks in another and whites in another. At this point of time I had no understanding of the pekin bred and I was purely breeding for the colours and as back yard pets. In 2010/11 I decided to work on my white bantams using two different roosters purchased from the Dandenong Poultry auction. At this stage I decided I like the white beak however I wanted to improve the leg feathers of the offspring. In 2012 down sized to roughly 6 hens and purchased another 2 new white roosters from the Dandenong Poultry auction during the year. I was still working on the white beak and the leg feathers were improving. In 2013 I used one of my offspring cockerels to cross back to one of my hens. Over the years I had only been keeping the hens (2-3 hens from each rooster) and worked with a small number of birds. Late in 2013, I started to become familiar with the pekin standards and decided I wanted to develop a bearded pekin a close to the standards as possible. I purchased a white pekin rooster from the Traralgon Poultry auction who had great shape and bright yellow beak and feet. At the start of 2014 I reduced my flock down to 4 hens with white beaks and I only had the 1 yellow beaked pullet. I used the rooster I purchased in late 2013 again for majority of the year. I produced a couple more pullets with yellow feet and legs, however the neck was still to long for my liking. Late in 2014 I used one of my offspring (beard and m**f) to cross back over the pullet with the yellow feet and beak to test the whether the beard to beard produced 100% beards. This was not the case with roughly 50% being born without a beard. In 2015 I purchased a white rooster from Abundant Layers (Emerald, Vic). I have kept 2 of the hens which I’m happy with the shape, beak and feet. In 2016 I purchased a white rooster from Pearcedale Pekins (Pearcedale, Vic). I decided to keep a couple of cockerels growing them out to use late in 2017. In 2017 I purchased a white rooster from Rain Hayne and Shine Farmyard (Balnarring, Vic). I’ve only kept 1 pullet from this line, which ill cross back to a black cockerel. Late in 2017 I chose the best cockerel (M**f) from the Pearcedale Pekins line putting him over all my black pullets (purchased from Wangaratta poultry auctions) and all the white hens. I have kept all his white pullets for 2018 which have fantastic beards however their neck is still a little long. I kept a black bearded cockerel, a non bearded black pullet and 2 bearded black pullet also from this rooster. I am really happy with my black bearded as they have yellow feet and beak, good shape and short necks. In 2018 I purchased a white cockerel from Pearcedale Pekins (Pearcedale, Vic) I will use him to cross over all the black bearded pekin later in the season. I will cross my Black cockerel over the black pekins (Wangaratta birds) and my white pullet from the Rain Hayne and Shine Farmyard line. My white m**f rooster will be crossed back over the white hens and non bearded blacks.
