The tower was constructed between 1732 and 1763 for a priestly brotherhood commonly known as the Confraria dos Clérigos. The Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni took advantage of the steep incline of the street thus making the vertical expansion of the church façade, particularly imposing. Today, the tower is an icon of the city of Porto, having served many purposes over its 250-year history. It stands 76m tall at one of the city's highest points, making it easily visible at sea, and subsequently serving as a guide to ships coming to port. ❤️🌍
