I remember being 25, standing at work, and wondering if internal rotation or external rotation at the hips is proper when standing. I also went YEARS flaring my ribcage thinking that was good posture. The first line of this post is kind of a joke, but not really at all. We learn how to ride a bike, we learn how to use a pencil, but why the hell does no one teach us the right way to stand or sit; the things we do most often in life? Learning how to cue mountain pose in yoga asana was extremely enlightening for me, so hopefully this helps you as well!

Without understanding the real goal of yoga, we often find ourselves in a yoga asana class striving to make the biggest fullest expression of each pose, thinking that the goal of yoga is to do just that - get more flexible, go bigger, make it look easy. But that isn't what it's about at all. Instead - going inward, getting embodied, purifying the body, and using the breath to still the mind - that's what it's about. To facilitate this inner experience - Play with variations of poses and movement in poses that feel good to your body on each given day. Don't feel like you have to do exactly as the instructure is cuing; you know what your body needs. And if the pace of the class is too fast, slow it down. It is your practice. It doesn't matter how flexible the person next to you is or if you like like that yoga ad you saw yesterday. As long as you are working toward stilling the mind, you are doing the work. Keep it up!

We all think of yoga as a form of exercise, but it is SO MUCH MORE. Yoga is one of six philosophies exploring existence and perception that came out of the Vedas, an ancient text from around 1500BC. It was systematized into a practice in The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali around the second century BC, and the yoga we know today evolved from 1 of the 8 components of yoga outlined in this text. These 8 limbs are aimed toward achieving a lack of suffering and consist of practices for interacting with yourself and the world around you, preparing the body to be able to sit comfortably in meditation, controlling the breath, mastering the senses, and stilling the mind. It's wild to think that yoga was originally centered around meditation rather than exercise. Understanding yoga as it was presented to us in ancient India is important because it changes the goal of our practice, allowing the transformative effects to increase exponentially.

I did yoga for exercise for 13 years on and off before realizing that yoga is more than a form of movement. When I learned about yoga philosophy, I was completely mind blown. Everything I had always intuitively known to be true was right there in front of me; written in ancient texts, conceptualized in a way that resonated, and put into words that made these things, that are often extremely difficult to verbalize, describable.
So what?
When we think of the word "yoga", we think of a class of sweaty individuals on mats doing backbends and headstands, but the goal of yoga is not physical flexibility. In fact, yoga postures were originally all seated poses with the goal being to prepare the body to sit comfortably in meditation for an extended period of time. Yoga is a process, yoga is a philosophy, and the goal of yoga is yoga.
The benefits of yoga extend far beyond flexible hamstrings and mobile shoulders, and I want to share that with others. I have created a retreat business, Self-Centered Retreats to serve as a vehicle for this. We have two planned Beyond the Pose yoga retreats in July and September, which have a heavy focus on yoga off the mat and ancient practices that you can use as tools for transformation moving forward.
