My Moroccan Adventure

Normally, at this time of year, we would be hyped about our annual New Year's Eve trip in the Sahara, which has been a thing since 2016 when My Moroccan Adventure came to life.

Sadly, this is the second year in a row that our most favorite Moroccan experience has been canceled. We are sad to be so far away from home (6500 miles, to be exact) and we are missing all the new and familiar faces.

But what we are more concerned about are the people who make these trips happen.  The backbone of Moroccan tourism:  guides, drivers, the families who own and operate the accommodations that make our trips so magical, and the guys who take care of the camels.  The women who weave the beautiful carpets that no one has been able to buy.  The cooks who spend their time preparing the most delicious Moroccan dishes.  So many people who have been out of work for too long.  People who depend on tourism income to feed their children and keep their lights on.

We are hopeful to be fully back in operation in Spring of 2022, but right now, the borders are still closed, people are still out of work, and tensions are at an all time high.  Meanwhile, we just close our eyes and picture those endless landscapes and beautiful sunsets and feel the warm Sahara sun.

I complain a lot about work, because well, it's work. But sometimes I am reminded how wonderful it feels to do what I do for a living, that I have chosen a path to be my own boss - which requires a huge amount of patience and discipline.

I recently was introduced to an amazing person, Annika Ziehen, who is not only a very accomplished globe-trotting author, but also just a genuinely interesting and fun person to be around, who I am happy to now call my friend. Within our partnership, Adil and I were able to show her the magic that we create within our Sahara trips and she wrote an amazing piece about her experience traveling with us and our crazy train of other travel enthusiasts.

Ok, ok, we know it's a little cliche, but who DOESN'T want to go wandering through these winding streets to have a real-life Aladdin experience? 🤷

A little fun fact about the Marrakech Medina: these roads are called Derbs and there are hundreds, but only a few have street signs. Most are not wide enough for a single small car to pass, which is why most people stick to walking or riding motorbikes in the Medina. Watch out - they whizz by at lightening speeds!

But we are here to say with full confidence that we do the best job.

Moroccan food, by design, is very bread-heavy. Almost every meal is eaten with bread and in most cases, bread is used as a utensil to scoop food from the dish that people are sharing.

The breakfast you see here is the most traditional, with a variety of savory pancakes served with sweet fruit jams, butter, soft cheese, and if you're lucky - amlou - a type of sweet almond butter made with argan oil and honey.

Courtyards and atriums of Marrakech riads (guesthouses) are architecturally designed to stay cool even in the most intense heat. So when it's boiling out in the streets, you can still find plenty of chill!

In between browsing the markets and strolling through the medina alleyways, we like to take the little pause, by grabbing a good book and finding a shade spot on the sofa, feeling the cool air and hearing sounds of the fountain.

If you're a meat eater, this is the place for you. In this small street tucked into the Marrakech medina, you'll find slow-cooked lamb, beef and a special Marrakech specialty: Tangia - all prepared fresh each morning and sold by the kilo. 🍖🍖🍖
Tangia is an urn-shaped clay pot, typical to Marrakech, and inside you'll find a braised street of beef or lamb. We say it goes best with a warm glass of mint tea and a few extra napkins!

At our guest house in Agdz... The local kids here are amazing. Always so curious about the foreigners that come to stay. Every time we arrive here, we are greeted by neighborhood kids that come to talk to us, trade Arabic for English, or sometimes just watch. But they are always smiling. Life here is happy, and we're happy to be a part of it.

Morocco is full of details. Everywhere you look, if you take the time to really look around, you'll see the most beautiful details in the way things are made.

Tiles, doors, mosaic walls, carvings, even the details of the handwoven carpets and fabrics used in everyday life - all bursting with details and craftsmanship that is unparallel to anywhere else in the world.
•••
We know that times are changing. People aren't doing things the same way they used to and technology is building a faster world. But we try to help preserve these ancient artisanal techniques by empowering the artists that still produce Moroccan art and textiles the way that their grandparents taught them. Some of these people worked their entire lives to learn a skill that most of us will never understand.

So when you notice the details, remember that someone's hands went into that work. It was someone's creative idea that makes these beautiful things possible and we are lucky to get to enjoy the little wonders.
