This summer ( i know it’s not over yet !) has been filled with so much fun getting to plan, coordinate and recommend excursions and watch incredible memories start to form on vacation!!! Some of my clients have already had their amazing trips and some are still yet to come!! Some of my highlights from trip planning range from family vacations, girls weekends, Europe trips and a solo trip. While researching and planning out next summer getaway, I found some incredible deals too good to not share. I don’t even know where to start with breaking down the ins and outs of this incredible trip and I have so many great questions to answer! So i figured I’d start at the beginning. We cruised out of Vancouver Canada, and flew in a day early. We only got to experience Vancouver for less than a day, but it captured our hearts immediately. I can totally see us living there! You get the beauty of mountains and ocean while still getting a city vibe. The food was incredible and Stanley park is a MUST see !! I definitely recommend a long weekend trip there to anyone , there’s so much to do, see and experience.

We stayed at the Hilton Downtown Vancouver- the service and hotel was amazing, the even had a salt water pool 🏊 which was fabulous. They were in a “heat wave” which felt like a perfect day to us. ☀️We tried the hotel restaurant which was amazing, some ramen 🍜 and of course when in Canada 🍁, Tim Hortons. If you’re looking for a long weekend, hotels for the Taylor Swift Concert or a family weekend I’m happy to help with hotels and recommendations! There is SO much to share about this incredible Alaskan cruise! When we get back this week and my WiFi is better i have so so much to share. This has completely exceeded every expectation. I will say- If you’ve ever considered an Alaskan cruise- let’s chat asap and get you booked this summer there’s still time into shoulder season or start the planning for next summer as these do fill up! Spain 🇪🇸

If I could move to Spain today I would! Spain has so much to offer from stunning coasts, to city life and do not sleep on those islands of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca. So many ways to travel- by land with a custom vacation, by tour, or by cruise traveling the Mediterranean Sea. I can’t wait to explore Barcelona and Ibiza Next summer. You can visit multiple cities during a 7-10 day trip.

Tuesday Travel Tip: Let’s Talk Luggage

🧳 Take a picture of your bag/suitcase- if it gets lost or misplaced, it’s easy to reference by a picture versus describing it.

🧳Highly Recommend using a hard top or hard cover suitcase to withstand the impact and conditions luggage goes through during travel, it will also last longer

🧳I recommend putting your contact information inside your luggage in case your tag comes off, then someone would be able to ID your belongings or suitcase

🧳 Using a unique design, bright color, stickers and always including a luggage tag makes your bag easy to identify and locate

✈️Travel Tips Tuesday✈️. Let’s Talk Kiddos-
***Long Post Warning*** But worth it 😉

As a pediatric occupational therapist this is one area of travel that I enjoy helping families with, especially to those families who might require accommodations or special considerations when traveling. To start, I’ve posted some ideas for all kiddos that would be great ideas for road trips or car rides- fidgets, play doh, water wow books, Busy books, weighted lap pads, textured items, music or books on headphones, crunchy snacks, etc. For those families traveling with children with sensory needs, autistic children or any child that requires additional support here are some available resources and ideas that might help during your next trip! Please feel free to share !

- Some airlines 🛩️, such as JetBlue, American Airlines, and United Airlines occasionally host opportunities to take part in mock flights. Many also offer early boarding for those with autism or other needs. They also may offer silent and/or pre boarding options

- Preferred Seating (bulkhead seats): These are the seats located directly behind the bulkheads (walls) of the different seating classes. These tend to have more leg room, which is good if your child stims or kicks frequently and needs to get in extra movement. Those in bulkhead seats are typically provided snacks/drinks first, in addition to being let off the plane quickly.

- Cruises 🚢: Autism on the Seas partners with companies, such as Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Disney to arrange appropriate travel for families with individuals with autism. There’s one staff member to every two family members with autism, making it a more tailored and safe experience for all. Staff are happy to give parents and caregivers some free time while ensuring their kiddos have fun! Most cruise lines also have staff members and other programs available on board to provide activities and assistance as needed- if you are interested I can help coordinate that for you as well.

- Call Ahead 📲: Its always a good idea to call ahead to customer service -whether it’s the airport, airline, hotel, or destination to ask for specifics about what accommodations are available and discuss what support you need from them. As your travel advisor, I would also be able to make the calls to the hotel with any accommodation requests you have .

- Emergency Plan ‼️: having a safety plan with your children in the event that they get separated is always a good idea. Safety tattoos are one way to ensure your child returns safely to you and are safe on skin- or safety bands. Always carry a family photo with you, in case you need to show security what your child looks like.

- First/ Then: Never underestimate the power of “first, then” language. It’s simple, direct, cause and effect language to make it clear what the expectations and rewards are. For example, if your child is having a hard time sitting down, “First, buckle your seat belt, then Peppa Pig.”

- Sensory Bags, Toys & Games 🧸
For sensory input, include toys, such as stretchy bands, textured balls, a weighted lap pad, liquid motion bubbler, beaded keychains, etc. Pop the pig, puzzles, matching games, pin art or educational I pad games can be helpful.

- Heavy Work - Have your child engage in “heavy work” to get their body regulated before having to sit through for a long car ride or flight. You can choose from animal walks, jumping jacks, hopscotch, pushups, or anything else that provides input to help calm the body down. You can also provide helper jobs with carrying bags or luggage or wearing a weighted backpack.

- Noise Reduction- If your child is easily stimulated by different sounds, noise-cancelling headphones are helpful. Another technique is looking up “early hours” for the different destination day spots you might be attending. Many offer “early hours” in which children with auditory processing difficulties are able to come early and have a sensory-friendly experience in a calmer and quieter environment. A third strategy is to request a room on a higher floor and further away from on-site attractions and common areas.

- Outdoors & Active: National parks, kayaking, and other outdoor recreational activities for kiddos with autism are always good ideas to get their bodies moving.

- Prepare, Plan, Practice, and Patience: This can feel like a lot of work, but it will be worth it for a better outcome during your trip. Start by discussing, using social stories, practicing, and watching videos on what to expect. Use a countdown calendar to build up anticipation and excitement. You can also download the Fly for All app by Alaskan Airlines that helps ease anxiety about the new experience.

- Quiet Space- Many destinations, such as Legoland, Hershey Park, Disney, and more have designated quiet areas or rooms for individuals to go when they are overstimulated or need to calm down. Check beforehand online to find out where to go if your child becomes upset.

- Routine: Try and maintain a daily routine, as much as you can. Whether it’s a morning or nighttime routine, reading a book, and getting a good night’s sleep. This can help prevent discomfort and deregulation.

- Reinforcement: Don’t forget the simple act of reinforcing good behavior, especially frequently in such an unfamiliar environment. Whether it’s your child’s favorite toy, a snack, or a hug, make sure your child knows whatever he or she is doing is acceptable and makes you happy.

Just finished up a couple of family bookings for summer vacations! If you’re thinking about a family vacation, but want to stay in more of a villa or condo rental so that you can grab groceries and eat some of your meals in the villa versus a hotel, have a little more space and still have the option to be nearby all the attractions or off the beaten path, I saw some amazing options out there still available. The villas are going fast, still plenty of hotel options, but the prices will continue to rise, so I’m happy to start looking and giving options that will best suit your needs !
