Snapshot #3!

In this snapshot we turned onto the Koza River and headed north towards the Kochi Shinto Shrine and Botan-iwa.

The Kochi Shinto Shrine is a stone Gate looking over a lone island in the Koza river. The actual shrine is the island, and since it is considered sacred, you can't actually go onto the island.

Following the river we continue on to Botan-iwa. The rock formation is part of the same Geopark as Mushikui-iwa, and called Botan-iwa because of the rocks forming in a way that looks like a Peony Flower!

As we continued on towards our next destination, we noticed some honey bee hives set up by the locals to not only help local honey bees but also allow for them to harvest some Japanese honey

Please look forward to our next snapshot!

Post 2/3

While beautiful, Sakura trees are in a fragile state currently.

Sakura only typically live 60-70 years, and full blooms happen start at around 10 years and continue until around 40-50 years of age. After that time, the blossoms start to wane, and eventually the tree will collapse under it's own weight, or be unable to fight off disease and rot.

This isn't the only problem the Sakura trees are facing. Due to the explosive increase of deer in many parts of Japan, many blossoms are being eaten by them. When a blossom is eaten, it does not easily return next year, and so wild Sakura is becoming harder to find.

The other problem is the competition. The Cedar trees that blanket the countryside here grow taller and denser than Sakura trees, and out compete them for sunlight.

It's difficult to try to preserve the Sakura trees without inviting new risks to their genetic diversity, and risks to the local environment as well. Here in south Wakayama, Sakura trees face a harsh reality.

So what does this mean for the Sakura trees and the places like Shichikawa?

Conservation Authorities are doing everything in their power to conserve the Sakura, as it is an incredibly important part of not only Japanese culture, but local ecosystems as well. Places like Shichikawa are an important part in drawing awareness to the problems the Sakura trees are facing, and those places have a vested interest in keeping the beauty of Sakura trees around, as it helps shape their identities.

Rest assured that Sakura trees are unlikely to disappear, and they will still be around for many years to come. However the current difficulties are not to be forgotten. The Sakura trees will be around for many years to come.

You can start planning now for a trip off the beaten path to south Wakayama!

It's Sakura Season here in Japan! Post 1/3

During this time the countryside erupts with beautiful and fantastic colours of pink to white, creating an incredible, awe-inspiring spectacle.

These pictures are from a well known local town called Shichikawa up the Koza River. Their main road is lined with specifically Somei-Yoshimo Sakura.

While this species is famous in Tokyo, you can find the Sakura all over Japan, even off the beaten path here in Shichikawa and southern Wakayama in General

Introducing: Mina no Mise!「みんなの店」!

This wonderful roadside shop can be found along the Koza river. After opening over 20 years ago, it has since become a staple of the Koza river, being an important store for many people who happen to live in the countryside nearby.

The store is owned by a local Farmer, Mr. Kawaguchi, and is filled to the brim with local produce from not only his farm, but many other farms from around the area!

The shop also hosts a book and dishware exchange.

A lot of the farmland around the area is going unused as their original owners age with no one to take over, so Mr. Kawaguchi decided that instead of watching this land go to waste it would be better to use it again, and has started working farms nearby to keep the local farming culture alive and thriving!

Check out Mina No Mise 「みんなの店」 if you want to support local farms, pick up some a book, and a dish all in one place!

Bicycle Tour snapshot #1!

We are excited to show you what's in store for the Kozagawa Area, a bicycle tour of the beautiful countryside along the Koza River!

In this snapshot, we are showing the start of the tour Mushikui-iwa「虫喰岩」!

Mushikui-iwa is a striking rock formation that appears to be eaten by insects, hence the name "insect-eaten rock". Local legends blame an insect demon that liked to eat at rocks for this rock formation and other similar ones in the area.

Local legend also says that if you tie a bean to a string and put it in one of the holes, you will regain your hearing since the deity that watches over the rock has power over hearing. The shrine for this deity used to be on top of Mushikui-iwa, but has since been moved to the foot of the cliff for safety.

The countless holes were created by volcanic activity trapping sea water in the rock, and over time evaporating and leaving only the salt, which broke away parts of the rock face. This formation, and many others in the Kii Peninsula, are a part of the Nanki Kumano Geopark!

Keep an eye out for snapshot #2 coming out on Tuesday!

We are pleased to invite you into Moritoyo-Shoten 「もりとよ商店」!

Established in 1941, this store is a hit for both adults and children alike!

Originally a liquor store, severe flooding in 2011 caused the current owner, Mori-san, to realize that should make more than alcohol available for the people in town.

Beyond the front doors you will find both snacks and drinks alike! Featuring local favourites, international staples of alcohol, and tons of snacks available. If you are 18 and under, you won’t have to pay tax on the snacks you buy!

A little further beyond is the second half of the store, a cozy cafe! There you can stop by for coffee or tea, or have some top shelf and international brands of alcohol.

A usual sight to see during baseball season is the cafe packed with fans watching The Hanshin Tigers play.

Mori-san would like to invite you and your friends to come and enjoy snacks, drinks, and his top pick of locally brewed soy sauce!

This local confectionary shop is located right by the Koza-river, and is a must stop to satisfy your sweet tooth. While they have all sorts of traditional sweets and chocolates, they are also very well known for their cheesecakes.
