This post is entitled "How to get to enjoy your first Pennsylvania river otter catch more than I did."

1) Buy the relatively inexpensive tags. I had before, but didn't this year.
2) There are quite a few around, so know it is possible to catch one (reminder to self - buy a tag!!!)
3) Your beaver set that looks also like a set for a giant mink may catch a river otter (so buy a tag and avoid that kind of set out of season)
4) They may work really small streams, this one was caught in a spring run just near the end of the deep water from the dam pond created by the beavers in a 330 conibear.

I called the game commission and reported the accidental catch. They wrote it up that way but said if it had been caught in a foothold I would have been fined if I had dispatched it. Just FYI - they want to be called and I know another trapper they assisted with the release. They confiscated it and assured me it would be sent to their labs for study. FF

I am a little behind the times on using DP or foot encapsulating traps. I bought a half dozen a couple of years ago, but never got them set until this year. I got a good opportunity this year when an extended winter thaw was in the forecast (one of my favorite mid winter activities is trapping a thaw), there still was a lot of snow and ice around on the weekend that I had available to set up, and my brother in law was interested in thinning the racc**n population on his farm. I am very impressed with these traps! Very efficient in catch/hold, a miss usually seems to be knocking the trap over instead of a pinch (so the animal is likely to return for another meal later), and the trap is relatively selective to the target species. You probably already know this - FF
