Have you seen this video about the "all-new" TripAdvisor? They are clearly trying to socialise travel hashtag (and hopefully travel booking).
I used to be a heavy user and contributor; I still do on occasion, to compare hotels in unfamiliar cities. TA's biggest utility is its display of most impt info on one screen: ratings, both quant and qual, location maps, prices, and real pics. I reduced some time ago when it was clear there was an integrity problem with many of the reviews - my trust was eroded.
I see this as an attempt by TA to solve that problem. What could be better than trusting your friends' reviews?
The downsides: there aren't many people keen to share reviews (forget the level of detail) that will make this useful; peer recommendations may be helpful only for certain product categories and particular traveller segments (e.g families with kids, elderly, differently-abled, etc.). Quite a few others as well.
This revamp will likely be fantastic for content creators (hashtag influencers, vloggers and bloggers). These people are fast becoming the new funnel, channeling travel demand. TA may just pull it off over time, assuming they can convince the rest of us to stop using Insta, FB and Snap.
