Wellesley mine
Wellesley had intersected a rich stretch of reef after tunnelling almost 480 feet just above the creek. In 1867 a little over 3000 tons of stone yielded approximately 13,000 ounces of gold; and the next year's results were almost as favourable.
But below creek level this particular stretch of reef was to prove either unpayable or barren. In 1869 less than 400 tons of stone were crushed, yielding 658 ounces.
Having earned £49,200 in dividends in two years, the Wellesley directors were content to dispose of their lease to the Long Tunnel Gold Mining Company, operating alongside them on Nos. 9 and 10 North.
