The EU's digital COVID certificate regulation has launched this week. EU citizens and residents will now be able to have their proof of COVID vaccination, testing, and recovery issued and verified.

EU states must refrain from imposing additional travel restrictions on holders of an EU digital COVID certificate, unless they are necessary and proportionate to safeguard public health. The certificate will thus help facilitate travel, allowing holders to be exempted from restrictions such as quarantine.

New system will help to facilitate travel across Europe

Residents of seven EU countries - Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Croatia and Poland – can now start using digital COVID-19 certificates issued by the EU.

The certificates are issued free of charge and available in digital format or on paper and provide proof that a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19, tested negative, or recovered from an infection.

All EU member states which have passed the technical tests and are ready to issue and verify certificates. Other countries will join in the coming days and weeks.

Transport ministers from the EU, Switzerland and Norway have signed a letter of intent to establish a new Trans Europe Express (TEE) network that will link the continent with a mesh of high-speed services.

The proposal sees routes introduced in three phases: in the very near future, by the mid-2020s and by the 2030s.

Hong Kong's and Singapore's governments have postponed the start of a quarantine-free travel bubble between the regions, following a COVID-19 outbreak in Singapore.

The first flights under the bubble were scheduled to begin on May 26, but the governments announced that is now postponed, with a new announcement to be made no later than June 13.

A long-awaited quarantine-free travel bubble between Hong Kong and Singapore will open on May 26.

The bubble will begin with a single, 200-traveler flight per day in each direction. Travelers in both directions must use the respective contract tracing apps in use by Singapore and Hong Kong, among other new restrictions.

Thirteen European business travel buyers' associations have issued a joint call for a Europe-wide approach to enable companies to quickly resume business travel.

The associations have called for business travelers to be able to avoid quarantine if they are vaccinated or have tested negative, and for the implementation of standardized digital health certificates.

Germany has dropped quarantine requirements for UK travelers. However, international travel from the UK is still not permitted until at least May 17, except in limited circumstances.

Other areas removed from the list of risk areas are the mid-west and south-east areas of Ireland, the Finnish region of Pirkanmaa and Barbados. Arrivals from those countries are no longer required to enter a ten-day quarantine upon arrival in Germany.

Radius Travel employees are making a difference all around the world in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, with many volunteering their free time. Recently, Radius employee Val Giussi has been volunteering with St John Ambulance to assist with the COVID-19 vaccination effort in England.

As the pandemic swept across the globe, St. John has taken on a role supporting the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) to help care for the country’s afflicted and deliver vaccines.

As part of her volunteer work, Val assists in UK vaccination centers, helping patients with queries and doubts before getting the vaccine and overseeing the observation rooms post-vaccination.

Radius Travel agency VCK Travel is the first travel management company in the Netherlands to obtain international standard for privacy, the ISO 27701 for information security.

The standard indicates that companies control the risks in this area and that personally identifiable information is managed correctly.

Business travel is seeing steady recovery in Europe, according to Global Business Travel Association - GBTA's BTI Outlook, released this week.

A $25.9bn increase in business travel spending is projected in Western Europe in 2021(18.5%). Emerging Europe will see an increase of $5.6bn (18.9%). Most of this gain is expected to come at the end of 2021 as vaccinations increase globally and business confidence returns.

German companies are starting to lift travel restrictions, according to the latest survey of buyer sentiment by the German Business Travel Association.

German travel buyers are also becoming more confident about the resumption of business travel. More than a quarter now say they think their company’s internal travel restrictions will be removed by the end of the first half of 2021.
