Joyful faces atop Chimtarga Pass at 4760 meters! ⛰️❄️

The morning before this day, we woke up at the high camp with a white coat around our tents, as an unexpected snowstorm decided to join our expedition, postponing our ascent.

As soon as the weather permitted, we continued our trek, ascending towards Chimtarga Pass, nestled between two peaks of the Fann Mountains: Chimtarga and Energia.

The reward? Breathtaking panoramic views of the peaks and valleys below, making every step through the snow worth it.

Introducing João Freitas - (), the legend of Madeira and hiking guide committed to making the adventure unique for our travelers – literally.

João, is the kind of guy you want to meet in every time you go traveling. He is naturally wowing our clients with his knowledge of unknown trails, breathtaking views, secret spots, and fun facts about about the culture of his island. Plus his sense of humor is goofy as hell so time spent around him is sure to be hilarious.

This year, he also started leading trips for Epic in Pakistan as well - becoming the first guide in Epic’s history to specialize in guiding on two different continents.

João exemplifies what it means to be an Epic trip leader and we are so proud to have him on our team!

That’s a wrap on our October 2022 Discover the Hunza Valley Tour and the end of a truly Epic season in Pakistan 🏔🇵🇰⚡️!

This year we ran FOUR different itineraries in Pakistan and could not be more stoked on the various adventure experiences, personal growth, and countless laughs that our clients enjoyed this year. 2022 was the busiest (and craziest) year on record for Epic Backpacker Tours - thanks to all of you who came along for the ride; you guys made this year super special indeed. We are full of gratitude for you all!

Almost no one has heard of the village of Barah.

Even Pakistanis will shrug their shoulders when asked about its existence.

But this is one of the most beautiful and authentic villages in all of Pakistan: inhabited by curious locals, typified by terraced, mud houses, and covered completely in apricot orchards.

These days the word « nomad » gets tossed around a lot. Traveler nomad. Surf Nomad. Van life nomad - whatever. But the Qasqhai people living in the Zagros Mountains in Iran are REAL nomads - living seasonally in tents across different region with their families and sheep/goat herds.

They live out their days as their ancestors have for centuries. We had the opportunity to meet multiple Qasqhai families during our three-day hike in the Zagros - which for most of us - was the real highlight of the trip. Every year they are less and less Qasqhai people living this way as the younger generations migrate to cities in search of a different lifestyle. , our local guide and a good friend is leading efforts to preserve the nomad way of life, encouraging others in his community to maintain the nomadic lifestyle through sustainable farming businesses and small-scale tourism. For modern day Iran - food is as much about the story behind every flavor profile as it is about playing with new culinary influences, styles, and ingredients. And let’s be honest - it all tastes amazing.

“Shadow of the giant” - that’s what the word Deosai means in the local language.

Once you arrive at Deosai National Park, it’s pretty obvious how that name came about: everything is just BIG here.

Endless carpets of meadow, mountains stacked on top of mountains, and the most expansive night sky that you’ve ever seen. It’s really not hard to imagine giants actually roaming here.

In the second part of our 'Get to Know a Guide' series, we focused on Epic's Head of Operations and patron saint of lost mountain kittens, Ralph Cope.

Ralph feels particularly strongly about the transformative power of challenging oneself. Here's an excerpt from him on the subject:

"The thought of doing something scary is often more intimidating than actually doing it. When researching a new place or experience that we might have concerns about, things can quickly become exaggerated in our minds, so much so that we start to hesitate...but don’t let fear of the unknown stop you. Just go for it. The unknown may seem frightening at first, but once you’ve crossed that threshold, it’s really not so bad once you’re there. In fact, it might be one of the most exciting things that you do."

After spending nearly two weeks in the mountains, we like to indulge a bit in Lahore. And by indulge we mean EAT.

Seriously, Lahore features some of the best food in the entire country. Doesn't matter if you're in a swanky restaurant or a local roadside stop - it's all incredible.

Handis, nihari, kebabs, chaana - we'll take it all, please.
