I was saving the best for last. šŸ˜‰

Yesterday, I shared photos from Monetā€™s house to my stories. But you may have noticed that one of the best rooms was missing. The dining room. The famous yellow dining room. šŸŒ»

I was saving it for today to put in an actual grid post because itā€™s my favorite room in the house. The tone on tone yellow, the blue and white dishes, the Japanese woodcut prints... itā€™s perfection. Ingrid thinks so, too... Thatā€™s why we were inspired to make over her bedroom back in 2017. I think we painted about 2 dozen samples on the wall until we found the right shadeā€”ha!

Since then, her needs have evolved, clutter built up, and before we knew it... it wasnā€™t such a yellow room anymore. We had lost the vision. Last week she came to me asking if I could help her figure out more storage space. One thing led to another and all of a sudden, we had the whole room turned upside down. I asked her if she wanted to go back to it being more yellow again, more inspired by Monetā€™s dining room. She didnā€™t miss a heartbeat. šŸ’› And weā€™ve got a fun new-again project to work on. Our tastes might not overlap much, but this is one area where they definitely do.

And how about you? What inspires you about Monetā€™s home?

Trying to decide which one to add to the collection next and would love your input. šŸ˜˜

Also! Iā€™m sharing links to a couple of holiday playlists in stories today, if youā€™re looking for more to listen to. One is more fun and upbeat, the other is gentler and a little bittersweet.

The Travel by Design Gift Guide went out this morning to all subscribers to my newsletter, Letters from Eva! šŸŽšŸŒ²ā¤ļø

There are recs for travelers, for art and design lovers, for Francophiles, for babies and little kids, AND for tweens and teens. 12 recs per category, so 60 in total. 60 delightful, thoughtful, original ideasā€¦ in a range of prices. Lots of small shops, independent makers, women-owned biz, etc. featured, too. I get such a kick out of putting these together. Hope you enjoy!

And in case anyone can relate, Iā€™ve *barely* started thinking about my own gifting this year šŸ«£ so now Iā€™ve got a good place to start lol.

Oh, and a heads up! This sort of comprehensive newsletter usually only goes out to paid subscribers, but this time, as a holiday gift, Iā€™m sending it to everyone on the list. šŸ˜˜

If youā€™re not signed up yet but youā€™d like to receive it, sign up through the link in my bio and then DM me to let me know and Iā€™ll forward it to you. šŸ‘

Btw, I was thinking it was maybe too late for a gift guide and that there were too many already out there but I put it to a vote in stories and gift guide it is! (But to those who voted for something else, donā€™t worry, youā€™ll get it in next weekā€™s edition of Letters from Eva. āœØ)

Back in my 20ā€™s, I used to take photos with a Holga, too, and seeing these is inspiring me to get it back out again. Thanks Ellie!

Standing stones in the Brittany region of France with the kids when they were tiny šŸ„¹. āœØ

Before going to Brittany, Iā€™d read about the standing stones and was mildly interested in them, but when I got there and experienced them in person, I was blown away. They have such a magnetic pullā€”itā€™s hard to describe. Big, deep, ancient, mysterious, majesticā€¦

And can you believe we were usually the only people there? šŸ¤Æ Canā€™t wait to go back.

Felt appropriate to share this time of year. šŸThanks to for the reminder!

Made this bouquet from grocery store flowers using the skills we learned in a workshop with during the Paris by Design trip.

Bravo to , btw, because I was THE most high maintenance student during the workshop šŸ™„ā€”not understanding how to do it, hating the bouquet I made, asking for more flowers and for help to make it look better šŸ˜‚ā€¦ but she was super patient and helpful and really helped me grasp the concept by the end.

And now here I am, back at home, using the French technique she teaches so well. šŸ’ Thanks !

Food in France, A Love Story ā¤ļøšŸ„

I love to eat! And I donā€™t want to waste my time, money, or energy on a bad meal while in Franceā€¦ So food is a very important part of our guided trips. Some travelers have even told me that I have to do a better job including that in the marketing because they knew theyā€™d love the travel and art/design aspect of these trips, but not how much theyā€™d also really love the food. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‹šŸ‘

So, just following orders here šŸ˜‰ and showing you some of the delicious dishes we ate. So much fresh, seasonal, locally grown produce. So much amazing bread, butter, and cheese. Iā€™m getting hungry thinking about itā€¦

ALSOā€”itā€™s not just the food itself thatā€™s so special about our meals in France. Itā€™s the aspect of gathering around a table, of taking our time, of talking and connecting with each otherā€¦ Thatā€™s another surprise takeaway from these tripsā€¦ how magical it is to connect with our fellow travelers, with the local creatives we meetā€¦ thereā€™s a special alchemy that happens, and I think a lot of it has to do with the unrushed time spent around the table, breaking bread together.

More in stories. šŸ‘† (Also, trip report from Paris, including my favorite new spots to eat, for paid subscribers to Letters from Eva this month. šŸ’Œ)

This is the private apartment tour we did at the home / ceramic showroom of the lovely . Her handmade ceramics are gorgeous. Sheā€™s developed this unique process of finding volcanic stones in nature, grinding them into smaller pieces, and then incorporating those into the clay to create these stunning organic variations.

And we all loved how she combined the new with the old so skillfully in her apartment. Really beautiful.

Day 2 of the Paris Interiors trip (this Tuesday) was a series of intimate tours of local Parisian apartments and an art studio, thanks to my friend , who is an interior architect here in Paris. She helped me organize it all, and wow, what a day! šŸ„°šŸ˜

These photos are from her parentsā€™ apartment as well as her motherā€™s studio. (Find her mother at ā€” such a talented artist!)

šŸ“Marseille, France

Last fall, I took a few days to decompress by myself in Marseille and fell in love with that Mediterranean city. It still doesnā€™t have the best reputation, even among a lot of French people from other regions, but itā€™s so beautiful and has AMAZING light and energy and so much to offer. Annie from the Join Us in France podcast ( ) had me on to talk about my trip, share the places I loved, and explain why itā€™s a great place to visit.

If youā€™d havenā€™t been yet but it sounds intriguing, please give the episode a listen! (Linked in profile) And if youā€™re a fellow Francophile and/or are planning a visit to France soon, check out Annieā€™s podcast (Join Us in France / ). šŸ“La Flotte, Ǝle de RĆ©, France

Hello, Iā€™ve missed you! Itā€™s been quiet here on my IG but not quiet in my life & work. Such a crazy summer. Had to do triage and so took a break from IG for the last 2 months.

But now Iā€™m here on Ǝle de RĆ© with the family for a little R&R (w/ some work to thrown in šŸ˜‰) before heading to Paris and Provence for the fall guided trips. So tired, so grateful, so happy to be here. Itā€™s only been a few days, but I feel like Iā€™m about 50% cheese already and also that weā€™re THAT loud American family (despite our best efforts šŸ˜‚šŸ« ).

Looking forward to posting regularly again here on IG, but for more meaty Frenchie content and in-depth intel on the places weā€™ll be going, subscribe to Letters from Eva (link in profile šŸ‘†šŸ’Œ šŸ‡«šŸ‡·).

Thanks to .film for the pics!

Hidden gem near Paris: šŸŽØ
(bookmark this!)

A few things to know about Rosa Bonheur if you're not familiar (with tips for visiting the museum below šŸ‘‡):

1) She was an incredible 19th century artist who specialized in large scale paintings of animals.

2) She found a way to live life on her own terms while also enjoying tremendous success in her career, which as you know, was quite rare for women at the time. (She openly lived with her partner, Nathalie Micas for 40 years šŸŒˆ, wore pants and explored the woods on her own, commanded high prices for her work, showed in important exhibitions, & financially supported herself & her household, etc.)

3) Because she was a woman, she was largely forgotten from history. Fortunately, awareness is growing. For example, you may have seen a cameo of her work on The Queen's Gambit, or seen her paintings in the or the .

Tips for visiting the museum ():

1) Buy your tickets online in advance. This is mandatory because you can only visit the museum as part of a guided tour, there are limited spots, & it is frequently sold out.

2) The tours are in French, but they offer an English audio guide for international visitors. Make sure to being your own headphones because they do not provide them.

3) To get there by train from Paris' Gare de Lyon, take line R towards Montargis, get off at Thomery, then take the 15 min. walk on a trail through the woods, then along a country road. Do not count on being able to take a taxi / Uber, etc. in the tiny town of Thomery.

4) There's a charming tearoom onsite. Make reservations in advance. Other than that, there isn't any other food at the museum, train station, or on the walk in between. (It's in a wooded and residential area.)

SALVATION MOUNTAIN šŸŒøšŸŒžšŸŒˆā˜ļøšŸŒ²ā¤ļø

Created by Leonard Knight over the course of decades with adobe clay and donated paint (without the use of any electricity or running water).

He blushed if you tried to call him an artist, but dedicated his life to creating this monument to universal love. ā¤ļø

Itā€™s out in the middle of the desert, about an hour and a half from Palm Springs. While youā€™re out there, take a look at the outdoor art museums in nearby East Jesus and Bombay Beach, too. (See glimpses of those in my California highlight. šŸ‘†)

Well worth a day trip if youā€™re in the area. Itā€™s one of those places thatā€™s truly special and feels so much more powerful in person. As we were about to leave, the other visitors had cleared out, my family had walked out to our car, I was left alone to soak it all inā€¦ And it hit me in that momentā€¦ the way Leonard completely dedicated the final decades of his life to sharing a message of love with the world. He passed away a few years back, but his spirit lives on in this incredible creation. A true NATIONAL TREASURE if there ever was one.

Tina in Paris ā¤ļø

Iā€™ve loved this iconic photo shoot that Peter Lindbergh did of Tina Turner with Azzedine AlaĆÆa at the Eiffel Tower for a long time. So good! Really captured her incredible energy, the friendship between the two of them, and what a fantastic creative collaboration they had.

If youā€™ve seen the documentary, TINA, that came out a couple of years ago (highly recommend!) then youā€™ll know that her career really hit a standstill in the 70ā€™s in the States. But she was always beloved and popular in Europe, and my mom (who lived in Paris throughout the 70ā€™s) confirmed this. ā€œIt wasnā€™t a party if they didnā€™t play ā€œProud Maryā€. My mom also told me that she was surprised when sheā€™d come back to the States and hardly ever hear Turnerā€™s music or hear anyone talking about her. Of course that all happily changed with Turnerā€™s 1984 comeback album, Private Dancer. āš”ļø

But I think Tina always remembered Europeā€™s loyalty during her harder times and it seems like it went both waysā€¦ she ended up marrying a Swiss music producer and living out her last few decades in Switzerland (with a holiday home on the French Riviera šŸŒž).

I got to see Tina Turner in concert once, in Las Vegas, in the late 90ā€™s. (Thanks Mom & Dad! šŸ˜˜) She was about 60 at the time, and she still had more energy and charisma than most 20 year olds. I can still picture her whirling and kicking and belting out ā€œrolling, rolling, rolling on the riverā€¦ā€ She was amazing. A legend.

RIP Tina ā¤ļø

Yves Saint Laurentā€™s Paris atelier šŸ’™

Wow, SUCH an inspiring space. Itā€™s funny, because it reminds me of my own studio, which I created before Iā€™d ever seen photos of YSLā€™s (obvs his is much better though šŸ˜‰šŸ‘. ) The white cabinets on top and bottom, all the books and mood boards and art supplies and tchotchkesā€¦ even the very simple desk on trestle legs.

It also reminds me of the atmospheric, artfully cluttered feeling Iā€™ve always felt from my grandfatherā€™s offices, who also happened to work in Paris throughout the 70ā€™s (coincidence?) and that Iā€™m realizing must have had an influence on my own studio style.

The only thing Iā€™d change to make it my absolute dream studio would be to have the windows look out onto a gorgeous view of the ocean (instead of a sort of nondescript courtyard). Is that too much to ask? šŸ˜‚

What would your dream studio/office be like?

Paris, day 2 ā¤ļø

Spent most of the day in the 11th arrondissement, checking in on some of the places that are on the itinerary for the Paris Interiors trip this fall. (Itā€™s really important to me to thoroughly research, plan, and vet the itinerary for each trip šŸ˜… to make sure theyā€™re full of amazing, authentic experiences for everyone who comes along. Itā€™s a ton of work, but also super fun, of course. šŸ˜‰)

Also Iā€™ve been able to see a couple of Paris friends so far who reached out after my last post! šŸ’™ Feel free to keep reaching out, friends! My schedule is packed while Iā€™m here so Iā€™ve been wanting to reach out but havenā€™t had a chance to yet. Would love to see you of course, if possible. šŸ™

1 & 2) Lunch at .paris , recommended to me by šŸ˜˜.

3) Jasmine in all the flower shops and it smells SO good.

4) recommended to me by so many people and it lives up to the hype! Beautiful curation of made in Europe goods.

5) Little gift for Ingrid from longtime favorite .

6) Brocantes (flea markets / vintage / antique shops) ALWAYS.

7 & 8) Such a beautiful selection at , and the owners are so friendly and knowledgeable.

9) More beautiful tile.

10) Cute little store dedicated to fermented foods and drinks. I love how you can find pretty much any kind of specialty shop here!
