- A classic French cafe right next to the Luxembourg Gardens that was a favorite haunt of creative African Americans in Paris after WWII. Legends like James Baldwin, Duke Ellington, and Richard Wright.

- Les Tables d’Eva - a tiny shop jam packed with the most beautiful vintage French tableware, located in the market within the .

- A fantastic contemporary art gallery with locations around the world, including this one in the Marais neighborhood of Paris. (And in the letter, I let you in on a little secret tip about it…)

Did you know that Tina Turner had a special connection to Europe, to France, and to Paris? 🖤🇺🇸🇫🇷

If you’re familiar with her career and/or if you’ve seen the documentary, TINA, that came out a couple of years ago, then you’ll know that her career really hit a standstill in the 70’s in the States. It felt like all of her career momentum was lost when she bravely left Ike. For a talent as big as hers, who had already had some amazing hits (Proud Mary, anyone?!) it’s crazy to think that she was struggling to keep her career afloat… And in her 30s, which feels like it should have been her peak!

BUT she was always beloved and popular in Europe, and my mom (who lived in Paris throughout the 70’s) confirmed this. “It wasn’t a party if they didn’t play Tina.” My mom also told me that she was surprised when she’d come back to the States and would hardly ever hear Turner’s music or hear anyone talking about her.

Of course that all happily changed with Turner’s 1984 comeback album, Private Dancer, when everyone in the US fell in love with her again. But Paris was always loyal. They always knew her creative genius and incredible energy were something to be celebrated. ✨

And I think Tina always remembered that loyalty during her harder times and it seems like it went both ways… she had a vacation home in the South of France and one of her most important creative collaborators was the legendary Parisian designer, Azzedine Alaïa. I think when most of us picture her, that’s the image we have. Big, iconic, 80s hair, sexy leather dress (or skirt) by Alaïa, sky high heels. 🔥

I’ve loved this iconic photo shoot that Peter Lindbergh did of Tina Turner with Azzedine Alaïa at the Eiffel Tower for a long time. So good! Really captured her incredible energy, the friendship between the two of them, and what a fantastic creative spark they shared.

See a little peek of one of her Paris concerts in my stories today, along with a memory of her… 👆

📍Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte

Everyone knows about Versailles, but did you know that it was modeled after Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte and there’s a very dramatic story involved?

Basically, the minister of finance, Nicolas Fouquet, built this lavish residence for himself and threw an elaborate fete to celebrate its inauguration. His rival convinced the king that Fouquet had misappropriated the funds to build the chateau, so the angry king seized the property, threw Fouquet in jail, and hired the same team of designers to build him an even bigger, grander chateau inspired by this one. That, of course, was Versailles.

And the illustrious team of designers? They were the architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André Le Nôtre and the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun. ✨

Not as many people visit Vaux and it’s not nearly as crowded as Versailles, but IMHO, it’s even more beautiful. ♥️

(Although don’t get me wrong, I love Versailles, too!)

I love taking the travelers on my small design trips to special places like this… and we even went on the very special Soirées aux Chandelles, AKA candelit night, when the grounds and chateau are lit up by thousands of real candles… pure magic!

If this kind of thing sounds amazing to you, there’s a little room left on our Paris by Design trip for this fall! (Oct 28 - Nov 3). Learn more at the link in my profile and/or feel free to send me a DM.

Also, don’t forget to save this post for future travels, just in case! (Or share with a friend who’s heading to France sometime soon. 😘🇫🇷)

Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges was the first person of African descent to become famous across Europe as a classical composer. Born in Guadeloupe and then settling in Paris for most of his life, he was not only an accomplished composer, he was a violin virtuoso, a champion fencer, a friend of Marie Antoinette, and the conductor of what was arguably the best orchestra in Europe at the time.

Such an inspiring person! Learn more about him and other Black Americans in Paris in my “🖤🇺🇸🇫🇷“ highlight reels. (And then let me know if there’s someone else I should feature there who I haven’t already! 😘🙏)

The photos are stills from the 2023 movie about him called Chevalier ( ), which I highly recommend! (Available to rent/stream on Prime, Apple, and more.)

Thanks to for recommending I watch the movie and feature him in this series 🙏

Christmas around here looks cozy and homemade. Always a skinny Charlie Brown tree bought from a 2nd generation family business that sells them out of their front yard, Scandinavian paper flags that once decked the tree of my great-grandparents (who immigrated from Sweden and Norway), ornaments made by our kids, thrifted glass ball ornaments, a haul of IKEA straw ornaments my parents gifted us many years ago, and clip on lights (because I like the old fashioned look and it’s such a game changer not having to deal with the tangled strands. Highly recommend!)
film and I both came into our marriage with an existing collection of matryoshka dolls (if that’s not a sign that we’re soulmates, I don’t know what is 😉). When Ingrid was little, she took over the duty of setting them up each year, and she always does it with such care.

And the wreath! I took a workshop by , organized by , and feel so proud each time I walk by it (just like Jen predicted I would 😂).

Our stockings are all vintage, and mostly Scandinavian (as is the tree skirt). They’re in my stories today, if you’d like to see. ♥️ 👆

A Christmas gift for you! 🎺 🎁 🎶

3 holiday mixes to play today (and through New Year’s, if you’re anything like me). They’re on both Spotify and Apple, with the links in my bio.

“Winter Wonderland” is full of classic holiday standards like Ella Fitzgerald’s rendition of “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eva?” , Judy Garland’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”, and Peggy Lee’s “The Christmas Spell”.

“Merry Christmas Baby” is a fun, upbeat mix of tracks old and new with a good dose of soul. “Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday” by William Bell, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” by Darlene Love, and “Donde Esta Santa Claus” by Chang Loo are just a few.

And then “Christmas Time is Here” is the perfect mix for when you’re feeling that softer side of the holidays... maybe even a little bit of melancholy. “Aspenglow” by John Denver, “Day After Tomorrow” by Phoebe Bridgers, and “Skating” by the Vince Guaraldi Trio (AKA the Charlie Brown Christmas Album) are there, plus a bunch more.

Click through the links in my bio to have a listen. 👆🎵 And a very happy holidays to you!

Roger Minick, “Sightseer” series, 1980-2000.

“I began to compare what I was seeing to the religious pilgrimages of the Middle East and Asia, where the pilgrims are not just making a trip to make a trip, or simply to return home with some tangible piece of evidence that they were there––the snapshot––they have instead come seeking something deeper, beyond themselves, and are finding it in this moment of visitation. For as with all pilgrimages, they have made the journey, they have arrived, and are now experiencing the quickening sense of recognition and affirmation, that universal sense of a shared past and present, and, with any luck, a shared future.”

Oh Provence! 🌻🍇🌞🌿🥐

These are from our visit to the charming in the village of Menerbes in the Luberon Valley in Provence during this fall’s trip. Apparently you can book it and stay here on holiday? 🤯 We had a little tour to see the art, decor, and architecture. Loved it! (Save this post/info for future travels📍)

Scenes from my last 24 hours in Paris. ♥️

It’s always bittersweet to go home. Of course I want to go because I miss my family terribly and I CANNOT wait to see them… but I’m also sad to leave my favorite city, to stop speaking French on the daily, to say goodbye to amazing French food, to my local friends, to my lovely travelers…

And I’m still a little sad that our plans for moving here back in 2020 came crashing down and had to be put on indefinite hold for various reasons. It can be hard to see other people decide to move here and just have the ability to make it happen… when it’s something I’ve been dreaming of my entire life and actively trying to make happen for about 10 years or so.

At the same time, I’m happy for them, and seeing others make it happen gives me hope that one day I’ll be able to make it happen, too. I’m at peace with living in Utah for now, and I’m grateful for all of its natural beauty and for all the many people I love. I like it’s all for a reason, even if all those reasons won’t be completely apparent until much later.

Enough rambling. Flights taking off. xo

December / January 🎄❄️ ❤️ 🐈 🥣1) The first snowman of the season.

2) Made a flying saucer (or maybe 's Coeur à la Crème 😉 from her book, Barefoot in Paris.) You're supposed to make it in a heart-shaped mold, so now I'm adding one more thing to my Paris flea market wishlist. 🙈

3) Say hi to Levi, our friendly neighbor kitty.

4) O tannenbaum... (It's still up, thank you very much. Anyone else? 😂)

5) .film showing Lars and a cousin how to use the drone.

6) A beautiful sunny day at Utah Lake.

7) Borsch. When I met Kirk, he had just moved back to the States from Russia, so this dish always reminds me of him and our early days together. 🥰 (Plus, it always hits the spot this time of year. So tasty and nourishing.)

8) A new-to-me record shop, .vintage.groove.

9) Hi!

10) I started a family favorites recipe binder somewhere around a decade ago (or more?). We've loved it, so I decided to make a duplicate to give to a family member for Christmas this year. The kids decorated it. 😍

I was saving the best for last. 😉

Yesterday, I shared photos from Monet’s house to my stories. But you may have noticed that one of the best rooms was missing. The dining room. The famous yellow dining room. 🌻

I was saving it for today to put in an actual grid post because it’s my favorite room in the house. The tone on tone yellow, the blue and white dishes, the Japanese woodcut prints... it’s perfection. Ingrid thinks so, too... That’s why we were inspired to make over her bedroom back in 2017. I think we painted about 2 dozen samples on the wall until we found the right shade—ha!

Since then, her needs have evolved, clutter built up, and before we knew it... it wasn’t such a yellow room anymore. We had lost the vision. Last week she came to me asking if I could help her figure out more storage space. One thing led to another and all of a sudden, we had the whole room turned upside down. I asked her if she wanted to go back to it being more yellow again, more inspired by Monet’s dining room. She didn’t miss a heartbeat. 💛 And we’ve got a fun new-again project to work on. Our tastes might not overlap much, but this is one area where they definitely do.

And how about you? What inspires you about Monet’s home?

10 favorite holiday albums! 🎶🎄🎶 Which one of these do you like best? And what are some other favorites not pictured?

Trying to decide which one to add to the collection next and would love your input. 😘

Also! I’m sharing links to a couple of holiday playlists in stories today, if you’re looking for more to listen to. One is more fun and upbeat, the other is gentler and a little bittersweet.

And for subscribers to Letters from Eva, you got a cozy resource guide for the holiday break in your inbox on Friday. Hope you enjoy! ✨✨✨
