Today in Scotland we celebrate St Andrew's Day (or in Scottish Gaelic 'Là Naomh Anndrais').

Andrew was a fisherman and one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, along with his older brother Peter. Unlike Jesus, Andrew is said to have been crucified on an X-shaped cross or Saltire. Scotland honours its patron saint with the white saltire on our flag.

According to legend, Pictish king Angus mac Fergus had a vision of St Andrew before a battle in 832 AD.
On the day of the battle, a white saltire appeared in the sky, and the Picts were victorious. They are said to have declared St Andrew the patron saint of Scotland afterwards.
