A fish story…..

I do a thing I call fishography mixing fishing and photography, generally from a kayak. Some nights the fishing is better, some nights the photography is better. Tonight they came together but I had long telephoto lens on my Nikon when this fish was being battled so i could only photograph it with one hand with my ancient iPhone 6. Still, the result was pretty satisfying. This northern, which went about 25-27 inches, hit a Jitterbug -- a traditional surface plug I put on seeking bass. Then it jitterbugged itself and went airborne several times including once over the front of my kayak cockpit. I never had that happen before. This was by far the best image as the pike tired itself out so I could handle it, unhook it and release to sulk for awhile, smarting a bit and less likely to eat whatever it thought the Jitterbug was the next time it encounters such a potential meal. I didn't get away unscathed either, he got a tooth into the pad of my thumb as I was unhooking him.

HEADS-UP ANGLERS...THEY'RE BACK! -- HAMLIN LAKE FIREWORKS

If you're making plans to fish Hamlin Lake on Friday, July 2nd, expect things (i.e. the water) to get a little rough toward dusk.

As the sun starts to set, hundreds of boaters will be making their way towards Upper Hamlin's Camp Douglas-Smith. Why you ask? Well it's time once again for the annual Hamlin Lake Fireworks! 🙂

Here's the information:

WHAT: Hamlin Lake Annual Fireworks Display

WHEN: Friday, July 2nd, 2021. (Rain date: TBA)

WHERE: Upper Hamlin Lake (fireworks are launched from Camp Douglas-Smith which is located on the North shore directly across the lake from Wilson Hill Park on Barnhart Road)

TIME: Dusk (approx. 10:30 PM EDT)

Best viewing is by boat in the Upper Lake from Indian Pete Bayou west to Victory Park or on the South shore of the Upper Lake. For safety reasons spectators are not permitted on the grounds of Camp Douglas Smith and viewing from the North Shore is limited to private properties.

* Important notice to all boaters: The Mason County Sheriff Department will be patrolling the lake during this event. Please make sure you have enough life jackets on your boat for everyone on board and all the safety equipment required for your size boat!

Have a safe and Happy 4th of July...and remember...safe boating is no accident!

GOOD NEWS!

I just got the word from one of our Facebook 'group' members (who spoke to the Ludington State Park staff earlier) that the Michigan DNR has started the process of raising Hamlin Lake back up to its summer level today!

Raising the lake, which started in back 1935, can take from two to six weeks and all of that depends on how much rain/snow fall we get during the process.

Getting ready for winter....

It's official...I just spoke to Dan at the Ludington State Park and he said the Michigan DNR has begun to lower Hamlin Lake to it's winter level. Dan said, "The lake is a little high because of all the rain, so it'll be a few days until we notice any change in the water level." The lake lowering process is expected to take four to eight weeks...depending and the amount of precipitation we get over the next few weeks.
