LG rvforfun While we originally started the LG RVforfun page for RV tips when we first started RVing in 2012, we are turning it into an avenue to share our RV excursions.

First up - May 2022 - across Canada from British Columbia to Newfoundland and back.

We took a little drive to the actual Imperial Dam this morning. It’s built on the All American Canal which runs from the dam for 80 miles and provides irrigation for the Imperial Valley.

This afternoon Paul and Lorraine took us for a jeep ride to Martinez Lake. Our first desert jeep ride and it was wonderful! The desert scenery has its own special wonder and beauty.

Today was grab a few groceries day. We got a little poinsettia and some Dos Equis beer on sale for $6.99/dozen. 😳 This morning we had a nice sunrise but this evening we had a most beautiful, intense sunset.

A taste of where we’re parked at Imperial Dam about 25 minutes north of Yuma. It’s not exactly a pretty location, and it’s not the more secluded and private as many of the boondocking locations we choose, but it’s convenient to shopping and we have friends here as well as in Yuma. Paul and Lorraine found us a nice big “spot” close by them and Richard and Joyce so it’s easy to walk for happy hour.

Greg got a collapsible water bladder which he tested out today and it works well. Paul loaned us a “blue boy” he no longer uses to drain our black and grey and take to the dump. There is a 3 bay sani dump and a half dozen potable water stations here as well as plenty of dumpsters, so water, waste and garbage are a no brainer. So, we’ll definitely stay here for the $180/season fee through going home for Christmas and who knows how much longer. Weather will probably dictate.

We moved again. Last night we made an executive decision despite lgrvforfun having no executives. We were heading for Imperial Dam LTVA (total boondocking with a dump and water station as well as dumpsters) just outside Yuma for a few days and had planned to move around for the next couple of weeks til we fly home for Christmas. But, with our lower dollar and high grocery prices in the US, we decided to just stay put til January. Our friends Paul and Lorraine found a nice big “spot” for us not far from them and from Joyce and Richard, so we have people to talk to besides ourselves!

We hiked into Palm Canyon today but didn’t climb up to the palm trees. On the return we met a fellow from Colorado who is traveling around in his pickup truck with a canopy and all the necessities inside - he did climb up to the palms.

Today was supposed to be a hike day but this morning our Buddy propane heater wouldn’t light so we had to use the furnace which isn’t as efficient, is noisy and uses more battery power. So after our delicious crepes breakfast, I finished reading a book while Greg tore the heater apart and got it working again. It was a beautiful warm day.

We moved again. It was a bit too chilly in the morning where we were, so we packed up after breakfast and mozied down the road, across the Colorado River leaving Pacific Standard time behind halfway across the bridge to Arizona and into Mountain Standard Time at Parker. A quick stop at Safeway for some whip cream and strawberries so Greg can make us crepes tomorrow (yum yum), breeze through Quartzsite and all the Boondockers at La Posa North, south and west and up the Palm Canyon road to about 1 1/2 miles from the parking lot to the Kofa Mountain canyon. We found a nice spot with a beautiful mountain view and away from the other Boondockers. We were in this area last Christmas, but not so far up the road.

New day, new location. We’re still on the California side of the Colorado but now we’re directly across from Lake Havasu City on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) near the Chemehuevi Native land and the Chemehuevi Mountains wilderness. It’s pretty desolate land but there’s the little community of Havasu Landing about 5 miles down the road and on Lake Havasu.

Moving day. We left the boondocking location by Lake Mead and will make an overnight stop at a Passport America Rv park in Needles, California for $20/night. It’s not the greatest RV park but we did a small load of laundry to keep up and gave the tanks a good flush as well as filled the fresh water. We stopped in Henderson, Nevada for fuel and groceries on the way.

Today was a short drive (about 3 1/2 hrs) to warmth and it was relatively uneventful 😁. We did go to bed with the outside temperature at -4° C despite the Weather Network saying overnight would be +2° C. Greg was worried about the water in the pipes between the two greys, so he drained some into a bucket and poured it down the toilet. We still have a week of room in the black tank. All was well this morning but he did have to put some air in the tire with the new rim simply because it had been aired up warm yesterday.

We stopped in Moapa at the Muddy River Bar and Grill for late breakfast. Despite the outside of the building looking a bit sketchy, the service and the food was worth the stop!

In Overton we filled the fresh water at the local park and picked up a few groceries at the local market. Our first grocery shop since crossing the border. It was a slim shop because being a small town the prices were pretty high.

We’re boondocking at Stewart’s Point on Lake Mead for a couple of nights to chill out after the drive down- and to warm up a bit.

Well today didn’t turn out as planned. We woke up, made coffee and Greg checked the tires and one was flat - 13 # flat. It took a while to air up and he topped the other 3 as well. It was a 1/2 hr drive in to Caldwell, Idaho where we planned to get fuel anyway and sure enough, that tire was down 3 #. We went to the local Les Schwab because it was real handy and the guys there were super pleasant. We had to replace a rim. It’s not the first time we’ve had a rim failure since we had to replace the originals after 9 years. It’s the 5th time in 4 years.

After losing 4 hours of our morning drive time, we were back in the road and a couple hundred dollars lighter. The goal was to get past Jackpot, Wells and Ely all in Nevada, all high elevation and all expecting snow tomorrow! We made it to a little community called Lund, about 40 miles south and 1000 feet lower than Ely, and called it a day. It was dark and we were done.

It’s been a long day. We crossed through the border at 5:40 am - the only vehicle. He asked what was in the fridge, how much cash we had, what day we planned to return to Canada and that oddball question: when was the last time you entered the USA. That question was probably prompted because for me it was December 10,2023 and for Greg it was February 27, 2024. Correct answer, a wave of the hand and off we ventured into the torrential rain.

We couldn’t make very good time until daylight because it was hard to see in the rain with faded road markings. We hit strong wind at Pendleton, OR and you guessed it, snow over Deadman’s Pass 😳. By Baker City the sun was trying to shine, the wind was gone and there was no more precipitation.

It’s a rest stop night just inside Idaho from Ontario, OR right on the Snake River. Good thing we had a good sleep last night! Hopefully tomorrow we’re far enough down Nevada that we don’t need the furnace for the night.

We’re back at it. On the move…. We didn’t go far today… just an hour down the road and only 10 minutes to the border so we can get an early start tomorrow for our over a month delay heading “south” to warmer, dryer and brighter climes.

We picked up our grandkids yesterday for the night and today drove to Hope and back. We saw the Northern Lights last night, had a nice drive today and then early voted in our provincial election.
