“Utah’s Patchwork Parkway offers travelers a unique patchwork of colors, cultures, and climates that weave all six intrinsic qualities together to highlight a highway worthy of National Scenic Byway Designation.”
The 51-mile Hwy. 143 located in Southwest Utah, connects I-15 at Exit 78 at Historic Parowan with Utah Heritage Hwy. 89 at Historic Panguitch, and traverses through Brian Head Town & Resort, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Panguitch Lake, and Dixie National Forest.

As our Summer season at Cedar Breaks nears its end, we would like to make you aware of a few important closure dates:

Point Supreme Campground closes: September 24th
Visitor Center and Restrooms close: October 13th
Night Sky Programs at Pt. Supreme end: October 19th

Even though our facilities will be closed, the park is still open 24 hours, and you are more than welcome to visit while our rangers aren't around. Visitor operations will resume in early January for our Ranger-guided snowshoe hikes!

A little word to the wise, Highway 63, the road leading into Bryce Canyon closes at 5:30 on the morning of Saturday, July 13th to allow for the start of the Bryce Canyon Half Marathon! Road closure is until just after 6:00am as the runners start and then move past the traffic circle. Highway 12, the road that you run on to Cannonville, closes to one lane of traffic. The west bound lane remains open and traffic will alternate directions in one lane behind a pilot car until the highway opens again at 9am. Please be patient and watch for runners! See you on race day!!

When you look up at night, what do you see?

If you’re in a larger city you may not see much, but if you’re out in Cedar Breaks the stars in the sky seem endless. Cedar Breaks is an International Dark Sky Park due to its exceptionally dark skies and lack of light pollution. We take care of our skies in part by ensuring that all light fixtures are pointing down at the ground and turning them off once night falls. You too can protect the skies where you live by making sure you only use the light that you need around your home or putting them on a timer, so they aren’t on all night.
Together, we can keep the night skies awe inspiring for all.

The Yellow Evening Primrose (Oenothera flava) is a very unique flower we have here at Cedar Breaks!
It's defined by its large bright yellow flowers, and if you've seen it blooming consider yourself lucky! These flowers wilt and close during the daytime to conserve energy and water. During the evening, you can see them begin to open. Sometimes they can be seen blooming during the day if they are located in a cool shady spot.
These are starting to pop-up around the park for the season, so be on the lookout for them while you visit!

As we celebrate Smokey's 80th Birthday, let's do our part in preventing fires as we enjoy and recreate in our beautiful public lands and forests.

🎼SMOKEY'S SONG -- Time to honor Smokey Bear again as we prepare for his upcoming 80th Birthday on August 9. Our last post prompted comments about Smokey's song. Here's a look at the lyrics to Smokey the Bear (sic) from the National Agricultural Library.

Listen to Eddie Arnold singing the song in 1952 at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Myz93sXW66Y.

🐻Note: There is no "the" in Smokey Bear's name. It just made the song flow better.
