There are scientific reasons why we're so drawn to lakes, rivers, and oceans.

Our love of water is pervasive, and the reasons behind why we travel—and rack up vast credit card bills—to be by the water can be hard to articulate. “You’re paying for a feeling,” Nichols tells Condé Nast Traveler. “When you ask people to describe that feeling, it’s hard for them to describe other than to say they really like it, need it, and are willing to pay a lot of money for it.”

There are scientific reasons why we're so drawn to lakes, rivers, and oceans.

Don’t date an alpha female who travels
...unless you are a guy who can inspire her to dream big and wander with her. She knows she is destined for greatness and she won’t tone it down if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Let her have her own vision and aspirations. Don’t try to make her change her ways. She won’t follow you. But she won’t lead or try to control you either. She will expect you to do great things with her while traveling and sharing experiences.

An alpha woman who travels won’t chill with you on a beach. She is always working on something important and she wants a partner who understands and supports that. Lying on a beach and doing nothing for hours can ruin her mood as she won’t feel like spending her time in a meaningful way. She can relate to Elon Musk on that one – “The idea of lying on a beach as my main thing just sounds like the worst. It sounds horrible to me. I would go bonkers. I would have to be on serious drugs. I’d be super-duper bored. I like high intensity.”

She seeks a different kind of strong. Paying for dinner, helping her with her heavy suitcase, buying her presents is flattering. A true alpha will appreciate and let you do all these gestures for her but her expectations of you as her man will be set way higher. She will expect you to be her mentor, coach, pusher, be there for her in her struggle, help her with her business, believe in her when she doesn’t, comfort her when she needs to cry.

She burns, burns, burns and you better cancel that date if you’re bored or boring. Or as Matthew Hussey puts it, you have to know how to give great brainal – “the act of penetrating deep subjects of intellectual curiosity with a partner resulting in mental stimulation, and often, physical emotional attraction.” She will listen and try to connect with everything you say, even if she doesn’t agree with you. If there is no passion in you she will sense it and lose interest in seeing you again.

You won’t be able to figure her out. There is no stereotype or check box that can define her. She is tough on the inside but hot and feminine on the outside. She might wear a backless tight dress and become the center of attention at a fancy cocktail and then switch personalities, slipping into a baggy T-shirt and jeans to hitchhike across countries. An alpha female who travels doesn’t follow trends or social rules. She doesn’t need to “get a stable job, get married, get a mortgage, have kids, be a good mom and take care of the home” to feel like a fulfilled woman.

It will be impossible to make her jealous. Tell her that you are crashing a bachelorette party and she will hug you and wish you to have fun. Not being jealous might make you question if she likes you enough. She probably does. But she also knows that hanging out with other women will make you appreciate her more. And since she travels, she is not the type to get attached. If you meet someone else then she will let go and move on. She has plenty of options texting her from around the world anyway.

She is too much. Too smart, too independent, too giving, too well-traveled, too loving, too passionate, too ambitious, too curious, too funny, too spontaneous, too mad to live. At least this is what most average guys will see in her.

She will ruin you. Dating an alpha woman who travels will fill your life with adventure. Skinny dipping in natural pools, skydiving, getting a tattoo, booking a trip to North Korea, turning a Netflix & chill evening into a cake fight, climbing mountains, going on a safari. You won’t impress her by taking her out on Friday night, although she won’t mind if you do. But she appreciates creativity. Her influence can make you quit jobs and move to a different country. Her way of living life might give you a heart attack at times. But it will be the best heart attack you’ll ever have.

Don’t date an alpha female who travels because she belongs to the world. Belong to the world with her or admire her from a distance.

How I Made it to the Front Page of BuzzFeed Twice, and How You Can Too

"In 2014, I spent a lot of time analysing the content within BuzzFeed to get a better understanding of what makes a great article. This involved me crawling a huge set of URLs within BuzzFeed and then pulling in a whole host of different data points for each article. For example, I extracted the headline, the word count, the social shares, the number of paragraphs, the author, the type of post, and much more.

Using all of this data enabled me to reach the front page of BuzzFeed on two separate occasions, bringing through over 10,000 visits to my blog, a ton of social engagement and a few hundred new newsletter subscribers. Alongside this, the links that I was able to gain from BuzzFeed had a seriously positive impact on my search engine rankings (it’s a DA92 site).

What Makes a Great BuzzFeed Post?

It’s worth mentioning at this stage that there’s no sure-fire, guaranteed way to get to the front page of BuzzFeed. Like many major content publishers they have a moderation team that works tirelessly to only put forward the very best content for their target audience.

That said, if you have a good understanding of all the major factors that positively correlate towards a successful post, you’re arming yourself with the best possible data to enable your article to become a success. You can check out the technical sides of the content analysis process here (if you're interested in carrying out a similar exercise)."

Hands up if you know anyone who hates holidays? We notice (yes, through the screen) that no one raised their hands, and that’s because of the simple formula that travel = happiness. And it turns out there’s even a scientific explanation why…

Because of the way humans tick, we’re always dying to know WHY something happens, and the brains at Universities around the world are no different, meaning that a number of studies have been done into the relationship between vacations and that feeling of indescribable joy. Are we all just chuffed to not be at work? To be able to drink sangria at sunset in Spain? To frolic on the ski fields with our pals? Yes to all the above, but the underlying reason that the happiness that comes from travel is extra special, is because it lasts a looooooong time!

You’re probably scratching your head right now wondering how that makes a lick of sense when your vacay might only last two weeks, but a study done by Cornell University found that spending money on experiences, like travel, led to a more lasting happiness than money spent on physical objects such as a car or those cool embroidered boots you saw on ASOS that are actually on sale right now… Sorry where were we?

The study found that while we certainly get caught up in the moment and feel joy when buying material goods, it was transient and quick to fade, while travel on the other hand allowed happiness to last longer.

Why is this? Well it’s as simple as the fact that you get used to those boots or the car. You ‘adapt’ to physical objects and basically experience a constant depreciation of happiness towards them as they become more familiar.

“ONE OF THE ENEMIES OF HAPPINESS IS ADAPTATION. WE BUY THINGS TO MAKE US HAPPY, AND WE SUCCEED. BUT ONLY FOR A WHILE. NEW THINGS ARE EXCITING TO US AT FIRST, BUT THEN WE ADAPT TO THEM.” - DR. THOMAS GILOVICH, CORNELL UNIVERSITY

However, one-off and unique experiences like hiking Machu Picchu, seeing the Eiffel Tower for the first time or eating a seafood dinner on the deck of a boat in Croatia, are moments that can be remembered and cherished. Adding to that was the fact that every time you ‘visit’ a happy memory it makes it stronger in your mind, leading to the theory that your happiness over your travel experiences will only INCREASE over time.

“WE CONSUME EXPERIENCES DIRECTLY WITH OTHER PEOPLE. AND AFTER THEY’RE GONE, THEY’RE PART OF THE STORIES THAT WE TELL TO ONE ANOTHER.” - DR. THOMAS GILOVICH, CORNELL UNIVERSITY

Talk about a win, right? We know millennials cop a lot of flack, but other cool science-y studies have found that as a generation they tend to value experiences over high-end goods, meaning they’re clearly onto something when it comes to happiness!

Loneliness doesn't always stem from being alone. For architect Grace Kim, loneliness is a function of how socially connected we feel to the people around us -- and it's often the result of the homes we live in. She shares an age-old antidote to isolation: cohousing, a way of living where people choo...
