🇬🇧 I was telling you about Pietro Querini, a noble venetian merchant.
In 1431 he set off from Candia (Crete) with a mercantile ship loaded with Malvasia wine, spices, cotton and headed towards Flanders, but unfortunately he was shipwrecked and saw his riches vanish. Captain Querini and only a few of the crew survived when they managed to reach  the freezing island of Roest in the Loften, known as Norway’s untamed islands. He came into contact with the locals who ate mainly codfish, either fresh, salted or dried and then beaten with a stick.
The dried version was indeed suitable for the necessities of a maritime State such as Venice. They needed food that could be preserved and thus would keep during their long voyages and this was a good solution.
As soon as Querini was able to recover and make his way back to Venice he decided to load a huge cargo of this dried fish onto his ship. The fish needed to be beaten with a stick before cooking .
Moreover, the Catholic Reform of the Council of Trento in 1563 forced people to abstain from meat for 200 days and recommended Stockfish on Wednesdays and Fridays. So since for a long time it has been the dish on the tables of less wealthy people and has become a very popular, traditional dish today.

🇬🇧 Baccalà or Stockfish?  What exactly is it ?
It is basically codfish. The two different names refer to the method of conservation: Baccalà is preserved in salt, while Stockfish is dried.
In  Veneto in any Trattoria or Osteria you will find on the menu at least one dish based on Baccalà. But be careful, because the people of Veneto use the word Baccalà even for Stockfish, as the word sounds better to us and more musical than the other "Stoccafisso- Stockfish".
You can find Baccalà prepared in a variety of different ways: stew, creamy, sweet and sour. But the most well-known and typical of our region are the following:
- Baccalà alla Veneta stew “in red” recommended above all in the southern part of our Region.
- Baccala alla Vicentina is the most famous and boasts such an old  tradition  that there is even a Brotherhood of the “Baccalà alla Vicentina“ in Vicenza which upholds and passes on the traditional recipe.
- Baccalà mateccato. This dish  has a creamy consistency and  is typical of the exquisite “cicchetti” veneziani – venetian cicchetti.
What makes us so proud of baccalà is its origins and who discovered it. Of course, he was a venetian: Pietro Querini.
Follow me su Instagram to find out who was this noble merchant and his interesting history.

🇬🇧 Antonio Canova, The three Graces, 1813-1816, marble, height 182 cm.
There are two copies of this wonderful masterpiece. The sculptor from Possagno, in fact, sculpted a copy for Josephine of Beauharnais, Napoleon's first wife, now exposed at the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg.
A second work was made in 1817 for John Russell VI, Duke of Bedford, now conserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
We will accompany you to discover the places where this great sculptor, considered the greatest exponent of Neoclassicism as regards sculpture, was born and lived. We will visit his house in Possagno and his studio. We will learn about his technique and the tools he used.
We can imagine him in his studio creating his masterpieces, with his hands soaked in dust, admiring the prototypes of the works that have traveled around the world. An exciting trip as his works.

🇬🇧 Spring has arrived, bringing a special delicacy of the territory: the white asparagus. Classified as a DOP product (denomination of protected origin), it is a variety typical of Bassano del Grappa.
Thinking about asparagus reminds me of the beautiful moments of childhood, when my grandmother from Bassano del Grappa used to prepare a very simple but tasty lunch with asparagus and smashed hardboiled eggs seasoned with abundant olive oil from the hills of Marostica and sprinkled with salt and some pepper.
When I grew up, I also learned to match it with a good glass of Vespaiolo, a fresh white wine of the local Vespaiola grape variety.
The cultivation of asparagus in the Bassano area has very ancient origins and there are numerous documents and testimonies deriving from local tradition.
I will be pleased to accompany you through a sensory journey dedicated to the good food and knowledge of Veneto’s territory, discovering picturesque towns and precious jewels of art and culture as we go.

26/03/2021

🇬🇧 There are places you need to stop and admire because of their disarming beauty ... Yesterday our gaze was captured by these splendid angels, kissed by the light of the sun just before sunset. This is the work of Morseletto Laboratory from Vicenza. The statues date back to 1944. It is known that the Master Piero Morseletto came here in order to check personally the final work. We imagine him observing these 4 statues, placed on the balustrade in front of the Church entrance, feeling a mixture of satisfaction and pride for the elegance and grace of these 4 angels standing as protectors of this perched sanctuary.
