During one of the opening ceremonies of Dubai’s prestigious Equestrian Grand Prix, I was lucky enough to be present during a speech by H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, where he explained the origin of his vision for Dubai.
He explained to us that as a young boy, he was standing in his family farm and observing the birds flying past for their migration. He was curious as to why they didn’t stop along the way and approached his father with this question. His father told them that there was nowhere for them to stop, if there was, they would. His Highness then proceeded to plant a tree and, sure enough, during the next migration, some of the birds stopped, followed by more and more, as he planted more trees. His vision for Dubai was born out of that: “Build it and they will come.”
These trees that originally attracted the birds to land those many years ago, are now the malls, the museums, the parks, the resorts and the many attractions that attract people from all over the world to witness this city of the future born out of the sands.
The birds are now large birds of metal, bringing millions of tourists every year and facilitating the travel of the many residents who, thanks to this vision, are proud to call Dubai their home. The familiar music, wood trimmings and incomparable hospitality of the crew let you know you are already in Dubai the minute you board the flight. Not satisfied with “they will come”, his Highness’s vision provided them with a bridge to get here in such comfort that it would set the benchmark for all other airlines. That bridge, today, is the one of the world’s largest international airlines, and a brand that resonates on all corners of the globe.
The ability to look forward, to have a clear vision of the future and how to get there is what makes waking up in Dubai so magical. There is no such thing as the status quo – every day is a new opportunity to outdo yourself and be better than you are.

As the world gradually deconfines after a very economically painful three months, Hotels and Restaurants are starting to open their doors to guests and customers. One thing is for certain to the management though, there is no question of “going back to business” in the style of the pre-COVID.
While COVID19 may have erased, for many, the memory of the economic crisis we were already enduring prior to the virus, the numbers speak for themselves: travel and tourism simply no longer has a revenue model that is able to support a model where success was measured on volume instead of the bottom line. Across the best-known hotel brands internationally, hotel managements have spoken: excessive commissions paid out to online travel agencies, enforced rate parity, inventory freezing, delays of payments and refunds, not to mention the high level of fraudulent bookings all reflect in big red numbers in the accounts. These red numbers today present the industry with a liability many properties will not survive.
Described as “a nightmare of the past” in one of STR’s recent webinars on the state of the hotel industry, the reality that existed pre-COVID is today an archaic and inefficient way of operating. It is regrettable that it took an economic crisis and global pandemic for the industry to realize, at too high a cost, the magnitude of the disaster these inefficiencies were causing.
Modern technology, in the form of Blockchain and Tokenization, eliminate all these concerns by transporting reservations and payments into a seamless, immediate, transparent and self-certifying eco system where you retain and control the relationship and ownership of the client, your commercial strategy and inventory. The Team at Tratok (www.tratok.com), in working closely with Hotel Management Companies, Hotel Owners as well as travel and tourism service providers, have leveraged Blockchain and Tokenization to address, one by one, the issues raised, and return the industry to its rightful owners.

Has COVID killed the A380 for good?
The Airbus A380, pride and flagship of the world’s largest airlines, has redefined the way we travelled, offering bars, showers and even private suites in the skies. For its launch, Emirates Airlines had in fact created a special advertising campaign featuring the luxurious transatlantic cruise ships, the orient express and how luxury travel of that level now lived on through this giant of the skies – and it truly was. The Emirates A380 Bar became the destination of choice for meeting and networking with the who’s who of the world.
Unfortunately, the economic crisis and rise of fuel costs, made the A380 increasingly expensive to operate. The 4 engines (instead of 3 on an A340 or B777) consumed considerably more fuel (60,000 Liters for a full tank), combined with an extremely fragile electrical system, prompted Emirates Airlines to decide to abandon their 2 wide body model fleet (A380 and 777) and diversify, in the same form as other airlines, across a range or narrow and wide body. As the largest client for A380 with 123 aircrafts in the order book, this decision alone was enough to end production of the A380 going forward for Airbus Industries.
COVID19 presented the aviation industry with its greatest crisis to date, grounding entire fleets for nearly months, while airlines continued to pay the financing and maintenance fees, not to mention other overheads. Needless to say, once again, the A380 was the most expensive in the fleet. As countries gradually deconfine and airlines start re-assessing their strategies and air routes, some of the largest airlines have already questioned whether their A380’s will fly again. As mentioned above, Emirates is reducing their dependency on the A380 for narrow bodied aircraft, Air France (though sharing a common shareholder with Airbus Industries) have decided to reduce their A380 fleet and Lufthansa, Europe’s largest airline, has decided to discontinue all A380 flights from Frankfurt and are considering discontinuing them from their second hub in Munich as well.

What form will summer holidays take in 2020?
As summer approaches, everyone is keen to see what form these holidays, the longest for the year in many countries, will take. Uncertainty about the re-opening of borders, the availability of international flights, has triggered large scale campaigns, both at country government levels, as well as at hotel levels, for staycations – visiting and discovering one’s own country.
For example, the French government, a country which traditionally relies on heavily on large international tourist numbers, has mobilized the government media to promote a different region or village of France after the daily 13:00 news, one of the peak television viewership. Sensitizing the population to the diversity and the beauty of their own country, the initiative, beyond offering a holiday solution, aims at driving business to regions to be able to preserve the monuments and heritage which have particularly suffered from the extended lockdown.
International hotel chains such as Relais & Chateaux, Ritz Carlton, Intercontinental and Hilton have also heavily taken to social media to offer “staycation” packages and incentives for nationals to travel within their countries.
In their weekly webinar on hospitality trends, data company STR highlighted the consumer’s desire for more personalized boutique experience, far from population centers where the risk of contamination remains very real. This fear should greatly benefit the staycation trend, as travelers explore more remote areas in search of culture and authenticity. @ Dubai, United Arab Emirates
