Zebras are African mammals known for their distinctive black and white stripes, which help deter biting horseflies. Despite much debate surrounding which is their ‘base’ colour, zebras are considered to be black with white stripes in their fur.

As part of the horse family, they have an equine-like appearance with long legs and a mane along their neck. Each zebra’s stripes are unique, much like human fingerprints.

Zebras are primarily found in various African habitats, ranging from savannahs and grasslands to mountainous regions. A zebra’s species determines their preferred habitat, with different types occupying different geographical areas. There are three species of zebra—the plains zebra, Grevy’s zebra, and the mountain zebra. You can tell the different species apart by their different stripe patterns. Plains zebras are the most common. They have wide stripes that are set far apart. They’re found in the grasslands across much of eastern and southern Africa.

The Samburu people are some of the friendliest in Kenya. Originally a nomadic tribe, the Samburu tribe today still embraces their nomadic culture while jointly running some of the best Kenya game lodges. The Samburu tribe lives north of the equator in the geographically fascinating Samburu County of Northern Kenya. The Samburu people are closely related to the Maasai tribe who also live in East Africa. Both these tribes speak a similar language, derived from Maa. The Samburu tribe, just like the Maasai is a semi-nomadic people. Only the Samburu people are still very traditional and have not parted with old customs as compared to the Maasai. Cattle, as well as goats, sheep, and camels, play a vital role in the Samburu way of life and culture. The Samburu are highly dependent on their livestock for survival. Their diet comprises mostly of milk and occasionally blood from their cows. The blood is accrued by slightly cutting the jugular of the cow and draining the blood into a cup. The wound is then promptly sealed with hot ash. Meat is only served on special occasions. The Samburu people's diet is also supplemented with vegetables, roots, and tubers that are made into a soup.

Flamingos are spectacular birds, dressed in pink feathery coats. Although, there are only six species of flamingos remaining in the world. Yet, they can still be spotted easily by birders. These birds are usually found near wet habitats as they are quite adaptable.
Flamingos are seen in the Caribbean, South America, the Middle East, and near the Mediterranean. However, one of the best spots to see the breathtaking sight of millions of flamingos is in Africa.

04/09/2024

Lake Nakuru National Park is located in southwestern Kenya, northwest of Nairobi. It encompasses an area of 73 square miles (188 sq km) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that celebrates flamingos and abundant wildlife.

Lake Nakuru is the foundation of the park serving as a wildlife haven. The maximum depth is only 6 feet (1.8 m) with an average depth of 1 foot (.30 m) making it easy for animals to access. It is one of the Rift Valley lakes sitting at an elevation of 5,755 feet (1,754 m) above sea level.

Nakuru is an alkaline lake, which is what further draws birds and wildlife to its shores. The national park and lake are most renowned for the tens of thousands of flamingos which can reach over a million at their peak. The best place to view the view flamingos is from Baboon Cliff.

The serene landscapes of the area include grasslands, marsh, outcrops, rocky cliffs, and sedge. Yellow-barked acacia trees add to the traditional African wilderness experience.

An area around 116 miles (188 km) has been fenced to create a protected area for both black and white rhinoceroses as well as giraffes. The park features about 70 white rhinos and another 25 eastern black rhinos. It is one of the largest collections of rhinos throughout Kenya.

Wildlife is bountiful with a populous predator presence to reflect the abundance of prey. Predator species include lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas. Large pythons might be found as well. Giraffes and the two species of rhino are mammalian highlights however there are several other species. The waterbuck is more common than in other parks.

There is a small number of hippos that can be found along the reeds of the lake. Along with the waterbuck, visitors might also see Reedbuck and Bushbuck.

Birdwatchers can hope to see an African fish eagle, Verreaux’s eagle, a Goliath heron, a kingfisher, and of course an abundance of flamingos. It is a spectacular place for birdwatching with over 400 species. There are over a dozen different predator bird species. The flamingo population has earned the lake and national park the slogan, “the greatest bird spectacle on earth.”

The shallow lake is rich in algae and attracts the flamingos who eat around 551,155 pounds (250,000 kg) of algae per acre a year.

Lake Nakuru National Park is only 102 miles (164 km) away from Nairobi making it easy to make a day trip out of the city to experience this amazing encounter with wildlife.

Geological features

Hell’s Gate Gorge
Hell’s Gate gorge snakes through the park's centre, a tributary to an ancient lake that once existed. Visitors can explore the curving walls of the gorge with a guide, and experience the aptly-named sections – the devil’s sitting room, Hell’s clinic, and the devil’s mouth. There are several small waterfalls, both cold and hot, as well as stunning, multi-coloured rock strata and formations. You might even recognise some of the locations – they’ve been included in productions such as Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life and inspired others such as The Lion King.

Fischer Tower
At 25 metres tall, Fischer Tower is a remnant of the park’s volcanic history. This craggy behemoth was formed when semi-molten rock was forced through a fissure and solidified around 35 million years ago. Accompanied by a guide, visitors can climb the tower and gaze over the surrounding area – a view that has changed little in a very long time.

Obsidian caves
Another vestige of volcanic activity are the obsidian caves, located along the Buffalo Circuit (a 14km track around the eastern part of the park). Entering the cool of the caves, you’ll notice the shiny, black and dark green surface of obsidian rock. This mesmerising gleam is the result of molten lava coming into contact with water and cooling rapidly.

Wildlife
Aside from the spectacular geology, Hell’s Gate is also home to a wide range of wildlife. Despite its relatively small size, the area’s wildlife includes giraffes, lions, leopards, buffalo, Thomson gazelles, and eland antelopes. The high cliffs of the park are also ideal for nesting birds, which total around 103 species. Of particular note is the bearded vulture – a rare yet stunningly beautiful bird.

Also known as the gnu, the wildebeest is a member of the antelope family. They have a large, box-like head with curving horns. The front end of their body is heavily built, while the hindquarters are slender with spindly legs. They have a gray coat and a black mane as well as a beard that can be black or white. There are several races of wildebeest. The species forming the large herds of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem of Kenya and Tanzania is known as the western white-bearded wildebeest, while the eastern white-bearded races inhabit Kenya and Tanzania east of the Gregory Rift. The brindled, or blue, race occurs south of the Zambezi River.

Day trip to ol Jogi Rhino sanctuary

Ol Jogi Wildlife Conservancy is home to a range of threatened species, including cheetahs, African wild dogs, and the largest population of Grévy’s zebras in Africa as well as, of course, both black and white rhinos.

It was established more than 60 years ago and, in 1980, became the second privately owned rhino sanctuary in Kenya. A stronghold for the Eastern black rhino subspecies, the Conservancy has proven itself as one of the most successful rhino breeding programs in the country. The rhino sanctuary was expanded in 2005 to incorporate the entire Conservancy, which is now home to a Key 2 population of Eastern black and a significant population of Southern white rhinos. As the populations have grown, Ol Jogi has contributed many rhinos to the national population by helping to restock areas where rhino numbers have dwindled or disappeared entirely.

Much of this success can be attributed to its inclusive philosophy of close collaboration and support for the neighboring local communities with which it shares the landscape.

27/08/2024

When visiting a Maasai village, you can expect to experience a unique and culturally rich environment. The Maasai people are a semi-nomadic ethnic group located primarily in Kenya and Tanzania. Here are some things you can expect when visiting a Maasai village:

Traditional Greeting

Upon arrival, you will likely be welcomed by the Maasai villagers with a traditional greeting. The Maasai often perform a special dance called the “Adumu” or “jumping dance” as part of their warm welcome. The traditional greeting when visiting a Maasai village is often a warm and lively exchange. Here’s an overview of the traditional greeting customs:

Handshake:

The Maasai often greet visitors with a handshake. It is customary to extend your right hand for a handshake while maintaining eye contact. This gesture signifies respect and friendship.

Verbal Greeting:

The Maasai commonly say “Sopa” (pronounced soh-pah) when greeting visitors. It means “hello” or “welcome” in the Maasai language. You can respond with “Sopa” or “Hello” to reciprocate the greeting.

Singing and Dancing:

As part of the greeting ceremony, the Maasai may perform their traditional songs and dances. This includes the famous “Adumu” or “jumping dance,” where the Maasai warriors showcase their strength and agility by leaping high in the air. You may be invited to join in the dancing if you feel comfortable doing so.

Blessing:

In some instances, the village elder or a respected member of the community may offer a blessing to the visitors. This can involve prayers, words of wisdom, or wishes for good fortune and safe travels.

Exchanging Names:

It is common for the Maasai to exchange names during the greeting process. They may ask for your name and share their own names as a way to establish a personal connection and foster a sense of camaraderie. Remember to approach the greeting ceremony with an open mind and a respectful attitude. Engaging with the Maasai people in their cultural traditions can create a meaningful and memorable experience for both visitors and the local community.

Traditional Dress

The Maasai are known for their distinctive clothing. Both men and women wear colorful and intricately designed garments. The Maasai warriors, or morans, often wear brightly coloured shukas (robes) wrapped around their bodies, while women wear beaded necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

The Maasai people are renowned for their distinctive and vibrant traditional dress, which is an essential part of their cultural identity. Here’s an overview of the traditional Maasai attire:

Shuka:

The shuka is the most iconic piece of clothing worn by the Maasai. It is a large, rectangular piece of fabric made from vibrant, checked, or plaid patterns in various colors. The shuka is draped over the shoulder, wrapped around the body, and fastened with a pin or knot. It serves as a versatile garment that provides warmth, protection from the sun, and a cultural symbol.

Beadwork:

Beadwork is an integral part of Maasai attire, particularly for women. The Maasai are skilled artisans in beadwork, and they create intricate designs using colorful glass beads. Women wear beaded necklaces, bracelets, and earrings that showcase their craftsmanship. The beadwork often carries cultural significance, representing aspects such as age, marital status, and social standing.

Accessories:

The Maasai adorn themselves with various accessories. Men and women wear leather belts adorned with beads, which are not only decorative but also functional in holding weapons such as knives. Maasai warriors (morans) may wear headdresses made from ostrich feathers or other plumes during ceremonial events.

Sandals:

Maasai sandals, known as akala or oshaki, are made from cowhide. They consist of a simple sole with leather straps that wrap around the foot and ankle, providing protection and support. The sandals are often intricately decorated with beadwork.

It’s important to note that while traditional attire holds great cultural significance for the Maasai people, modern influences and changes in lifestyle have led to some variations in dress among different Maasai communities. In more urban settings, you may also see Maasai individuals wearing Western-style clothing alongside traditional garments.

The Nairobi Safari Walk is a carefully designed replica of Kenyan national parks and reserves. It provides a sneak peek into what visitors can expect to see in the vast landscapes beyond Nairobi.
Located inside KWS Headquarters at the main entrance of Nairobi National Park, the Safari Walk spans over 27 acres. It offers a comprehensive walking safari experience within the diverse habitats of Nairobi National Park. Inside the safari walk are three main habitats namely the savannahs, wetlands, and woodlands. At the entrance to the safari walk, you’ll find a terraced wetland adorned with water lilies and papyrus and home to grazing pigmy hippos and crocodiles. From here you can head to the ground-level walk or head straight for the raised wooden boardwalk that had been cleverly built at tree top level to provide aerial views of the safari walk.

The raised boardwalks meander past different enclosures with strategically located viewpoints and signboards so you know what to look for. The second zone namely the savannahs hosts big cats like lions, cheetahs, and leopards alongside zebras, albino zebras, antelopes, giraffes, and the rare bongo.

Here’s a fun fact about the rare bongo. Did you know that native people believed touching or eating the bongo caused spasms that felt like epileptic seizures? Yeah, well, we won’t be finding that out thanks to the enclosures!
