One of the things about teaching my Korean students is their love for food. I have been learning list of food vocabulary because of them. Oh, boy even if I am a foodie, a traveler, and a teacher I should admit that my knowledge is limited and I myself is an interested learner in this area. And to tell you, these aren't just the Korean cuisine that we are talking about. It is more than that. Here were some of them:

1.) TANGHULU - It was Soobeen, my Korean student in Hanoi that I have learned about "Tanghulu", a Chinese candied fruit melted with sugar. I even get to experience preparing this snack with her.

2.) SCHNEEBALL/SCHNEEBALLEN - Soobeen mentioned it to me while we were doing our lesson. She said, it was a pastry from Germany. You have to smash to eat it.

3.) MALATANG - It is becoming popular now in the Philippines. But, it was Juseong who taught me what this food is. This food is from China, particularly in Sichuan. Close to hot pot, but there is slightly difference they said. Would love to discover more of it soon.

4.) MADELINE - Now, while talking to Julie, my primary student, whom I get to speak with about food today. I asked her what the flavor of her cake, because it was her birthday last week. And she said, "Madelines". I searched for it and ask her, is this the bread? She said, "yes."

I know that with the innovation, fusion, and culture, I still have yet to experience these things and there are still more to discover. It still amazes me that as I teach, I am also learning through my students. I would love to experience what they have been experiencing, because life should not stop to what you know.

Have you ever recognized this place? Are you a fan of Korean drama, particularly of Squid Game?

In 2015, I visited Korea with one of my travel buddies, Sheena . This place was not really part of our itinerary, but since it was near to where we were staying and it was for free, we immersed ourselves to this park as there were locals particularly ajhumma and ajhussi who were here.

The Tapgol Park is located in Jongno district in Seoul and it houses one of the national treasures of Korea and one of the important place as it is a part of their historical movement, March First Movement in 1919. And now, the scene from Squid Game 2 where Gong Yoo was stomping on the bread and was furious was shot here. I felt lucky that Sheena and I came to this place and couldn't believe that one of my favorite Korean actors has been here and have done one of the iconic Korean shows, Squid Game 2.

Phil-Kor Friendship Coffee Table Book

It was a busy quarter and I was not able to attend the K-Culture Night as much as I would love to. So yesterday, I went to with my mom to pay for a visit and pick up my coffee table book.

Being part of the Krew was one of the highlights of my year. Never did it cross my mind that I would become a part of the 75 chosen Korean fanatics. Have I manifested it a long time ago? Korean culture has already been a part of me few years back and my life turned like a beautiful Korean story fully crafted with passion and aesthetic. It was injected into my life without me knowing it and truly joining the Korean crew batch 11 made me a person who could easily talk about Korea and blend with knowledge and continuous learning about this amazing country. To more years of ties between Philippines and Korea. Mabuhay!

2024 is the year for bookworms

I decided to delete my Netflix and focused on reading books. Being a teacher of 21st Century Literature, I believed that I should keep myself up to the trend of bookology. I have loved reading since I was 2, my favorites back then we're stories about Rizal and the fairy tales. And though there were times that I am slowing down in this hobby because I felt that it took sometime for a reader to finish a book, I believed that I am teaching the subject for a reason. Literature was one of my favorite subjects back in high school and college. Now that I am a teacher, I am so glad that I get to influence my students to read or normalize loving books. I am so happy sharing this liking with my students and sometimes seeing them carrying their book, asking for recommendation, or talking about what they read. Cheers to more book discoveries...

1. The Celestine Prophecy - Given by my friend Dannika, took me years to finish it. Lol
2. The Song of Achilles - Recommended by my students
3. Sushi for Beginners - just because of the title that's why I read it
4. A Tiny Bit Marvellous - really funny book
5. Bakit Hindi ka Crush Ng Crush mo? - read in one sitting
6. The Midnight Library - 1st book in Arellano University and planning to re-read
7. First Person Singular - because Murakami
8. Before the Coffee Gets Cold - recommended can't wait to read the other books
9. Pachinko - sooo lucky to have this book and probably my favorite

시상식 means a award ceremony. Usually at the end of the year, there are several award ceremonies recognizing one’s excellency, service, and outstanding achievements.

Which K-award ceremony is your favorite?

Bongseonhwa Nail Dye

Jei, my Korean student who showed me her nails during one of our lessons. And when I asked what did she do to her nails, she said they played and colored their nails using the 🌺 flower from her grandma's garden.

Little did I know that this is actually a tradition in Korea, Beongseonhwa. Last Saturday, December 14. An event in organized by in partnership with wherein a workshop about nail dyeing has been taught to those who joined the event. It was a fun experience spent with family and friends.

Was able to assist during the Bongseonhwa Nail Dyeing held in Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City and received these gifts from Apop. I have always been wanting to have a book from our Philippine national artist' Rio Alma. Being a literature teacher it means so much to me. Now, I have to wait for him to sign the copy of this book.
