Japan's Coming of Age Day, or Seijin no Hi, is celebrated annually on the second Monday of January to honor young individuals transitioning into adulthood.

Traditionally, this milestone was marked at age 20, but since 2022, the legal age of adulthood has been lowered to 18. Despite this change, many ceremonies continue to celebrate those turning 20. On this day, young women often wear vibrant furisode kimonos, while men don formal suits or traditional attire. Ceremonies are held nationwide, featuring speeches and commemorative gifts to encourage new adults as they embark on their adult lives.

How do you think this tradition reflects Japan's cultural values?

Many visit shrines for hatsumode, the first prayer of the year, seeking blessings for health and prosperity. Children receive otoshidama, envelopes filled with money, as a token of good fortune. The beloved Japanese folktale Kasa Jizō is closely tied to the spirit of giving during Oshōgatsu (New Year). The story follows an elderly couple who selflessly offer their last straw hats to Jizō statues on a snowy night. Their kindness is rewarded when the Jizō return the gesture, embodying the essence of compassion and gratitude that defines New Year traditions in Japan.

During Oshōgatsu, families also honor Jizō, a guardian deity, and embrace acts of generosity to welcome the year with good fortune and harmony. Have you ever experienced Japanese New Year traditions? Share your thoughts below!

Christmas in Japan blends Western customs with unique local traditions? Instead of turkey, many Japanese families enjoy a festive meal from KFC, a practice popularized by a 1970s marketing campaign.
Another sweet tradition is the Japanese Christmas cake—a light sponge cake topped with whipped cream and strawberries, symbolizing prosperity and indulgence.
Interestingly, Christmas Eve in Japan is often considered a romantic occasion, akin to Valentine's Day, where couples exchange gifts and enjoy special dinners.
