I love this article about how traveling can teach us empathy, open-mindness and respect. “We are not all-knowing creatures. If we live in a village . . . we think our truth is the only truth; we think the way we see ourselves is the only way to see ourselves. But if a stranger walks into our village, or if we . . . walk into a village of strangers, we are suddenly aware that there are other ways of looking at the world; there are other ways of looking at ourselves, at who we are, at our place in the world, at the ways we identify ourselves.”

AFAR's editor in chief Julia Cosgrove introduces the magazine's March/April print issue dedicated to empathy, and reflects on how seeing things from other perspectives improves the world.

Spending Earth Day outside and feeding Mother Nature with as much gratitude as I can. “Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life last. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature-the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.” Rachel Carson

My dad sent me this picture of the sun setting over Hampton Lake, where I grew up and learned to swim. The memories from this dock and lakeshore seem endless. Mostly sweet, some hard, all part of what shaped us.

Coldest run I’ve ever done...6°F. Icy eyelashes, frozen face. I almost quit after a mile because I was uncomfortably cold. But I warmed up a bit and got 4 miles in. All worth it to run with the Tetons in view 😍
