Day 2 - Samoko to Sapareva Banya
About 38km, starts as a long flat straight road across plains, was into wind today and you follow the line of some mountains to your left, it was here I stopped to take the pic of yellow flowers looking towards them.

The road was mostly good but a part with a few k of roadworks and gravel meant alot of dust was thrown up in my face by passing cars and I ended up pushing some way where the gravel stones got big enough that I feared a puncture. At another spot here I took the pic of the ploughed field with Mt Vitosha off to the left, nice view, bit of perspective on where I came from.

Around half way to Sap Banya (15-20k in) I detoured off the road to take a look at Belchin, which I knew had a spa thing going on, this loop added about 5k. In one spot here I was chased at full sprint by a tiny furious dog which I think would have nipped me if I hadn't accelerated away.

Back on the main road there was a couple of slogs uphill to Klisura, but was mostly riding and just pushing a little toward the end into the village square where I took a rest and ate my sandwich, purchased in Samokov.

Now around 25k into a 2nd day of riding and 'feeling it a bit' I was wondering what the last 12-13k for the day would be like but I was in for a pleasant surprise.

After a short 1-2 min ride up to the crest of a hill near the centre of Klisura a downhill section, which continued for 8, 9k was very welcome. First winding down through the trees fairly steeply with brakes on the whole way and then at least 3-4k on a really nice new surface bit where I could mostly freewheel, just peddling a bit on the last section before the turning to Sapareva Banya, where I photographed the red flowers with the town as a backdrop beneath the tree lined mountain behind, and the horses by the road.

After a manageable uphill bit into Sapareva Banya I linked up with the guesthouse hosts and settled into my log cabin for the night. Photo to follow.
After a rest at the cabin, a short walk from there I spent no more than an hour in the main town spa pool, enough to chill right out and allow the various exercised muscles to relax, then walked up to a recommended new pizza place in the town centre for dinner (pic below). Pizza LaRocca. They're good!

Writing from there now. Will head back to chill at the cabin shortly. It'll be 60k + back to Sofia again tomorrow, I think weather may be less good in PM so will leave early. I'm a bit worried about the big hill back up to Klisura, to get back I have to retrace my route for about 20k, then 'I think'(?) it'll be mostly down to Sofia.

We'll see, it's been a great day, weather has held, beautiful sights, feeling very chilled in this cute spa town I've always been a fan of. Think it might be 9 years since I was last here. Been a few times before I'm sure.

First post here then, taken a while, was procrastinating about what to do about this page and writing this now as I am on a road trip of sorts, on a bike not in a car this time and it feels like a good time for one, with all this 'World crap' going on.

I like the idea of facilitating road trips in Bulgaria, something that could easily become a business but more like an occasional or periodic thing for now. Originally was thinking of car / minibus based roadtrips and no reason not to include cycling now I feel. I'm a pretty keen cyclist and always have been. Good for the warmer months when you can't ski.

Writing this on day 2 of 3 cycling from Sofia to Samokov (yesterday) and on to Sapareva Banya today - a spa town. Then will take a back road back to Sofia on day 3, Sunday.

So quick commentary of yesterday. I know the Samokov road from Sofia very well. Several times have cycled as far as Pancharevo Lake and around it, its 10-15k from Sofia, a comfortable ride and a popular place for people living in Sofia to head for weekend walks. There's a beautiful backdrop of forest and mountain on both sides honestly. At the same time it's quite built up on one side - Pancharevo and Kokalyane.

So though I never cycled beyond there I have been many times to Borovets - ski resort, a short drive beyond Samokov.

Actually, though I've been doing 40k + rides on a heavy, cheapish mountain bike with thin-ish tyres around Sofia I was a bit worried about how uphill this was going to be. But... the ride up to Pacarel lake, around 12-13k more, was absolutely fine, a slight incline all the way, but seemed to go fairly fast, I cycled it all fairly quick. Weather mixed and surprised how cold it felt actually. But this helped. The pic of me and the 2nd pic were at Pacarel, around 30k into the ride. In contrast to Pancharevo its completely desolate there, saw two workmen, otherwise it was just green / nature, very nice.

The next bit up to the beginning of Iskar lake I would describe as initially beautiful, the sun came out and there's a nice flat-ish bit with some great scenery and then it was a lot up and steeper than the first bit. On a nice light road bike I think I could have made it all the way up, but in the heat on this heavy thing I did push in places.

The spot where I stopped for lunch, 1 more pic of me (quite tired at this point, hence looking a bit unwell 🙂) and the well appreciated beer is at the beginning of the lake, around 45k in, before you can see it actually.

Great restaurant (Priyateli, 'friends') with nice garden which I'd recommend, and the beer is their own and was good!

It then seemed to take a long time to get past Iskar and most of the rest of the ride (almost 25k) is a slight incline all the way to Samokov, about half is tree lined with occasional glimpses of the lake and the rest like a long straight slog across the plain that leads into the town.

At Samokov I stayed at exactly the sort of guest house I'd hoped to stay at (Guest House Legato - http://www.booking.com/Share-BqCDl1) with a really helpful, friendly guy agreeing it was a great idea to 'escape what's going on in the World right now' in the way I am and making good suggestions for dinner at nearby 'taverns'.
One more pic below of a very cool looking house with cute garden I found in Samokov, near where I stayed. It's an interesting, architecturally mixed place.

Now sitting at a simple takeaway cafe in central Samokov Square - see last pic below, having ordered two coffees, two filled pancakes and a large sandwich for lunch for less than £5, feeling very happy about the feeling of being on the road -' that feeling'!, with a few hours ride ahead of me, to a place where I can enjoy a decent / chill out spa session.

What I think I'll do is post something here each day, and maybe share it all more widely once back in Sofia.

Cheers, Niall
