The Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) is one of the most exuberant and striking birds of the Andean forests.

With an impressive appearance, this species is known for its vibrant and distinctive plumage, which makes it one of the most remarkable and fascinating birds in the region.

In the photo, the first bird is the female, with more subdued colors that allow for better camouflage. The second bird is the male, notable for its intense and bright orange plumage, complemented by a structure of erect feathers that form an impressive crest. This characteristic not only adds to its beauty but also plays a crucial role during courtship rituals, when the male displays his feathers to attract the attention of females.

The presence of the Andean Cock-of-the-rock in its natural habitat is an unparalleled visual spectacle and a privilege for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Its exuberant plumage and ritualistic behavior provide a unique and memorable experience for those fortunate enough to witness this magnificent bird in its natural environment.

Looking for a birdwatching experience like no other? The Hoatzin is a bizarre and beautiful bird that will leave you in awe. Found throughout the lowlands of northern and central South America, this unique bird is fairly common along lakes and slow-moving rivers, where it roosts in trees and shrubs.

With a diet of young leaves and buds, the Hoatzin’s digestive system works much like a cow’s – earning it the nickname “flying cow.” Their natural history is as fascinating as their appearance: bright blue facial skin, red eyes, and a spiky crest set them apart. And their young even have claws on their wings to climb back into the nest when they fall into the water!

📍 Want to spot this prehistoric beauty? Join one of our birdwatching tours for a chance to see the Hoatzin in its natural habitat!

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest canid in South America and a symbol of our biodiversity. With its long legs, reddish fur, and graceful stride, it's known for its presence in Brazil's Cerrado regions. This solitary and omnivorous animal feeds on small creatures and fruits, like the famous "wolf apple."

Beyond its beauty and uniqueness, the maned wolf plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance. Unfortunately, the species is threatened by habitat loss and road accidents. Protecting the maned wolf means protecting the Cerrado and all the species that live there. Let's take care of this gem of Brazilian wildlife!

Brazil is an extraordinary destination for birdwatching – it’s like a second home for us at Neblina Forest. We are in awe of this country’s rich avifauna and incredible landscapes.

According to the latest research published in the "Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Brazil" (second edition), Brazil is now home to an impressive 1,971 bird species – that’s 4.3% more than the previous edition! Out of these, 293 species are endemic, ranking Brazil third worldwide for bird endemism. This is a true testament to Brazil's biodiversity.

With new discoveries and the contributions of citizen scientists, Brazil’s birding scene continues to grow. We love being part of this journey, connecting with nature and celebrating Brazil's incredible bird species. Let’s continue to protect and enjoy these natural treasures together!

04/10/2024

World Animal Day, celebrated on October 4th, invites us to reflect on the urgency of protecting and preserving all forms of life. More than just a simple celebration, this day reminds us of the profound connection between humans and nature, encouraging concrete actions for animal welfare and habitat conservation. It is a call to adopt more responsible practices and to recognize the priceless value of biodiversity, which is vital for the health of ecosystems and the future of our planet.

Moreover, World Animal Day highlights the crucial role that each species plays in ecological balance. From large predators to small insects, all have an essential function in the cycle of life. The loss of biodiversity directly compromises the functioning of ecosystems and, consequently, the quality of human life. By celebrating this date, we reinforce our commitment to preservation, respect for animal rights, and the promotion of a more balanced and sustainable coexistence with the environment.

This magnificent hummingbird is endangered and found only in a small area of Peru. Its body is quite small in size but this hummingbird has an extraordinarily long tail and males have rackets on the outer most tail feathers. Marvelous Spatuletails inhabit humid forest borders, second growth, and montane scrub.

We recently completed another unforgettable journey in the Pantanal with our friends from Naturalist Journeys, LLC, alongside Wesley Larson and Pat Lueders. Despite the haze and smoke caused by the region's severe drought and increased fires, the experience was incredible! We observed an astounding 280 bird species and 25 mammal species on this tour. 🦜🦥

At Neblina Forest, for over 30 years, we've remained committed to valuing our planet's rich biodiversity. As we face critical times, we understand the immense responsibility of our actions and tours. Each Neblina Forest journey is designed to reduce our environmental impact.

This recent tour reminded us of our mission: to connect people with nature—a connection that has the power to create positive, lasting impacts on our planet.

Gray-and-gold tanager.
Chunky medium-sized tanager found in the canopy of lowland and foothill forest from extreme eastern Panama to northwest Ecuador. Unmistakable in range: pale silvery-gray overall with a black face, a black shoulder, and messy black and gold spotting on the breast and nape. Pairs or small groups are typically seen in the canopy, sometimes perched quite conspicuously at the edge of forest. Often follows mixed-species flocks.

I just finished another Pantanal trip with our friends at Naturalist Journeys, LLC, being leading witH Wesley Larson and sharing time with Pat Lueders was great . It was hazy and smoky part of the trip , indeed a very unusual condition But the extreme drought on the region have increased the propagation of fires, we can not denied this fact, despite this I was amazed but huge amount of birds we did report on this trip 280 species and 25 species of mammals. I am not sure what will happen in the future with our planet , I am just a guide not God. But honestly we wil endure and will share real information with all our loyal customers and friends. Rains will come I guess then a new cicle will start . Like water we will adapt to the conditions. The pictures shows a wonderful sequence of one of the 7 jaguars we got . This one was curiours and eating pieces of grass ( cupin ) for about 20 minutes. Sometimes jaguars do this to help digestion and get some fibers . Interesting was for us to learn they are not only carnivores .!! Enjoy the pictures.

17/09/2024

The Wire-tailed Manakin is a small natural gem, measuring about 11.5 cm, not including the tail filaments, which are a distinctive feature of this species. In males, these curved filaments can reach up to 4 cm in length, while in females they are about 2.5 cm. This bird boasts a stunning appearance, with white irises, a darkened beak, and reddish legs, making the Wire-tailed Manakin an impressive sight in its natural habitat.

Female Wire-tailed Manakins have a more subdued appearance compared to the males. They have a dull olive-green coloration, with a slight yellowish hue on the face and chest, which becomes more grayish on the underside, with a slightly paler belly. This coloring makes the females visually similar to the P. fasciicauda species, although the Wire-tailed Manakin is slightly larger and has tail filaments, along with a more vibrant yellow tone on the throat and belly. Immatures resemble females but have brown irises, and as they approach maturity, young males develop brighter yellow undersides and a yellowish frontal band, along with the characteristic white irises.

The beauty and complexity of the Wire-tailed Manakin’s colors and patterns make it one of the most captivating birds in the forests where it lives, making it a treasure for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike.
