At Neblina Forest, our journeys are not just about birdwatching—they’re about the people who create unforgettable experiences. Today, we’re honored to introduce Juan Carlos Cárdenas, our guide in Peru and operations manager, whose passion for nature and culture inspires every traveler he meets.

With over 25 years of experience guiding in Peru and across South America, Juan Carlos discovered his love for birds and nature years ago while walking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. “The variety of ecosystems, plants, and animals sparked my curiosity and passion. Combined with the rich cultural heritage of Peru’s pre-Hispanic civilizations, like the Incas, this deepened my love for my country, which I now share with my clients.”

Juan Carlos has a special fascination with the Trochilidae family, or hummingbirds. “Though they’re small, these creatures bring so much joy. Their iridescence and unique flight patterns are mesmerizing. In Peruvian culture, they are considered messengers of the gods and our ancestors.” His appreciation for these birds reflects his deep connection to both nature and the traditions of his homeland.

For Juan Carlos, Manu National Park is a must-visit destination in Peru. Its incredible biodiversity of flora and fauna makes it a treasure trove for nature lovers. And, of course, Machu Picchu—a masterpiece of architecture and dedication—stands as a testament to the power and love of the Inca civilization.

With Juan Carlos, a journey in Peru becomes more than an exploration—it’s a celebration of biodiversity, history, and cultural pride. He shares his knowledge and passion with every traveler, creating a profound connection to the natural and cultural wonders of this extraordinary country. 🌳✨

At Neblina Forest, we know that our experiences go beyond birdwatching—they’re about the people who bring each journey to life. Today, we’re thrilled to introduce , one of our guides who brings deep knowledge and passion to every adventure.

With an impressive 35 years of experience guiding through nature, Roberto’s love for Ecuador’s diverse ecosystems shines through. “Ecuador and its nature amaze me. You travel just a few minutes and find yourself in a new, diverse ecosystem where you can expect the unexpected.”
His admiration for Ecuador’s richness inspires visitors to appreciate the incredible variety and mystery of its landscapes.

Among the countless birds he encounters, Roberto has a special fascination with parrots and macaws—their colorful feathers, vibrant calls, and curious nature. “They’re colorful, noisy, shy, and curious,” he says, reflecting the wonder he feels each time he observes these playful creatures.

For Roberto, the Ecuadorian Amazon, the eastern Andes slopes, the Chocó Andino, the Pantanal, and the Atlantic Forest are must-see destinations. Each of these places holds lessons in biodiversity and wonder, and he loves helping others experience their unique magic.

With Roberto, every journey in Neblina Forest is more than nature observation—it’s a meaningful experience, rich in stories, knowledge, and a deep appreciation for the world around us. We believe that’s what makes each step into the forest a true connection with nature.

Blue-necked Tanager 🩵
The Blue-necked Tanager (Tangara cyanicollis) typically inhabits humid tropical and subtropical forests, as well as forest edges and secondary growth. It can often be found in the mid-levels to canopy of these forests. This species is native to regions of South America, particularly in countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. They prefer areas with dense vegetation where they can forage for fruits, berries, and insects, which make up their primary diet.

We are excited to kick off our campaign “Neblina Forest: Stories That Guide, People Who Inspire”!

At Neblina Forest, we believe that our experiences are not just about birdwatching, but about the people who make these journeys unforgettable. To start our series, we are proud to introduce .

With 17 years of experience guiding through nature, Andrea has a special passion for biodiversity, especially birds. "The cloud forest is where I started my journey in nature and birdwatching. To me, it’s my second home." Andrea’s connection with this unique environment is deep, and she eagerly shares her knowledge, allowing visitors to see the forest in a way that only someone with her experience can offer.

In addition to her love for the cloud forest, Andrea is fascinated by the Strigidae family, or owls, which she describes as "complex and subtle." The ability to observe these nocturnal birds and uncover their secrets in their natural habitat is a privilege for Andrea, and she loves passing on this magic to the tourists she guides.

"The cloud forest, in its different altitudinal ranges, has so much to teach us." For Andrea, every visit to this ecosystem is a new lesson, and she is passionate about showing everyone the richness this environment has to offer.

With Andrea, every journey in Neblina Forest goes beyond simple nature observation. She guides and shares stories, cultures, and knowledge that make the experience richer and more human. We believe this is how we turn a simple walk through the forest into a true connection with nature.

The Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) is one of the most exuberant and striking birds of the Andean forests.

With an impressive appearance, this species is known for its vibrant and distinctive plumage, which makes it one of the most remarkable and fascinating birds in the region.

In the photo, the first bird is the female, with more subdued colors that allow for better camouflage. The second bird is the male, notable for its intense and bright orange plumage, complemented by a structure of erect feathers that form an impressive crest. This characteristic not only adds to its beauty but also plays a crucial role during courtship rituals, when the male displays his feathers to attract the attention of females.

The presence of the Andean Cock-of-the-rock in its natural habitat is an unparalleled visual spectacle and a privilege for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Its exuberant plumage and ritualistic behavior provide a unique and memorable experience for those fortunate enough to witness this magnificent bird in its natural environment.

Looking for a birdwatching experience like no other? The Hoatzin is a bizarre and beautiful bird that will leave you in awe. Found throughout the lowlands of northern and central South America, this unique bird is fairly common along lakes and slow-moving rivers, where it roosts in trees and shrubs.

With a diet of young leaves and buds, the Hoatzin’s digestive system works much like a cow’s – earning it the nickname “flying cow.” Their natural history is as fascinating as their appearance: bright blue facial skin, red eyes, and a spiky crest set them apart. And their young even have claws on their wings to climb back into the nest when they fall into the water!

📍 Want to spot this prehistoric beauty? Join one of our birdwatching tours for a chance to see the Hoatzin in its natural habitat!

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest canid in South America and a symbol of our biodiversity. With its long legs, reddish fur, and graceful stride, it's known for its presence in Brazil's Cerrado regions. This solitary and omnivorous animal feeds on small creatures and fruits, like the famous "wolf apple."

Beyond its beauty and uniqueness, the maned wolf plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance. Unfortunately, the species is threatened by habitat loss and road accidents. Protecting the maned wolf means protecting the Cerrado and all the species that live there. Let's take care of this gem of Brazilian wildlife!
