At Neblina Forest, our journeys are not just about birdwatching—they’re about the people who create unforgettable experiences. Today, we’re honored to introduce Juan Carlos Cárdenas, our guide in Peru and operations manager, whose passion for nature and culture inspires every traveler he meets.

With over 25 years of experience guiding in Peru and across South America, Juan Carlos discovered his love for birds and nature years ago while walking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. “The variety of ecosystems, plants, and animals sparked my curiosity and passion. Combined with the rich cultural heritage of Peru’s pre-Hispanic civilizations, like the Incas, this deepened my love for my country, which I now share with my clients.”

Juan Carlos has a special fascination with the Trochilidae family, or hummingbirds. “Though they’re small, these creatures bring so much joy. Their iridescence and unique flight patterns are mesmerizing. In Peruvian culture, they are considered messengers of the gods and our ancestors.” His appreciation for these birds reflects his deep connection to both nature and the traditions of his homeland.

Emerald tanager 💚
The emerald tanager (Tangara florida) is a species of bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. It is found in Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Panama. It is a medium-sized species that has a length of 10.6–13 cm (4.2–5.1 in) and a mass of 18–20.5 g (0.63–0.72 oz). It can be identified by its bright green plumage, with black streaking on the back and wings, and a black auricular patch and beak. It also has yellow on the crown and rump. The species shows slight sexual dimorphism, with the females being duller and having yellow-green in place of yellow on the head.

Blue-necked Tanager 🩵
The Blue-necked Tanager (Tangara cyanicollis) typically inhabits humid tropical and subtropical forests, as well as forest edges and secondary growth. It can often be found in the mid-levels to canopy of these forests. This species is native to regions of South America, particularly in countries such as Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil. They prefer areas with dense vegetation where they can forage for fruits, berries, and insects, which make up their primary diet.

With 17 years of experience guiding through nature, Andrea has a special passion for biodiversity, especially birds. "The cloud forest is where I started my journey in nature and birdwatching. To me, it’s my second home." Andrea’s connection with this unique environment is deep, and she eagerly shares her knowledge, allowing visitors to see the forest in a way that only someone with her experience can offer.

In addition to her love for the cloud forest, Andrea is fascinated by the Strigidae family, or owls, which she describes as "complex and subtle." The ability to observe these nocturnal birds and uncover their secrets in their natural habitat is a privilege for Andrea, and she loves passing on this magic to the tourists she guides.

"The cloud forest, in its different altitudinal ranges, has so much to teach us." For Andrea, every visit to this ecosystem is a new lesson, and she is passionate about showing everyone the richness this environment has to offer.

The Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) is one of the most exuberant and striking birds of the Andean forests.

With an impressive appearance, this species is known for its vibrant and distinctive plumage, which makes it one of the most remarkable and fascinating birds in the region.

In the photo, the first bird is the female, with more subdued colors that allow for better camouflage. The second bird is the male, notable for its intense and bright orange plumage, complemented by a structure of erect feathers that form an impressive crest. This characteristic not only adds to its beauty but also plays a crucial role during courtship rituals, when the male displays his feathers to attract the attention of females.

Looking for a birdwatching experience like no other? The Hoatzin is a bizarre and beautiful bird that will leave you in awe. Found throughout the lowlands of northern and central South America, this unique bird is fairly common along lakes and slow-moving rivers, where it roosts in trees and shrubs.

With a diet of young leaves and buds, the Hoatzin’s digestive system works much like a cow’s – earning it the nickname “flying cow.” Their natural history is as fascinating as their appearance: bright blue facial skin, red eyes, and a spiky crest set them apart. And their young even have claws on their wings to climb back into the nest when they fall into the water!

The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest canid in South America and a symbol of our biodiversity. With its long legs, reddish fur, and graceful stride, it's known for its presence in Brazil's Cerrado regions. This solitary and omnivorous animal feeds on small creatures and fruits, like the famous "wolf apple."

Beyond its beauty and uniqueness, the maned wolf plays a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem balance. Unfortunately, the species is threatened by habitat loss and road accidents. Protecting the maned wolf means protecting the Cerrado and all the species that live there. Let's take care of this gem of Brazilian wildlife!

A very nice friend and customer was this last weekend scouting some new areas on the Atlantic Forest - Brazil. I am sure he had lots of fun. !

On our last expedition, we connected two great biomes and incredible destinations: the Pantanal and the Amazon Rainforest - Brazil. After amazing sightings of jaguars and birds in the Pantanal, we headed to Juruena National Park, the third-largest national park in Brazil, a true paradise! We were lucky enough to spot a 9-month-old Harpy Eagle chick in its nest! It was an unforgettable experience, carried out in partnership with our local friends at Harpy Eagle Tours. Meet the Silver-breasted Broadbill, one of Southeast Asia's most iconic forest birds! 🌳 With a distribution that stretches from Myanmar and China through Mainland Southeast Asia and Peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra, this small yet stunning species is known for its extensive range—one of the largest of any broadbill. Typically found in pairs or small groups, these birds can be seen feeding in bushes and the lower branches of canopy trees.
