The New Castle (Nový zámok) in Banská Štiavnica is a prominent historical fortification built in the 16th century. It served as a defensive stronghold against Ottoman invasions. The castle’s unique architectural style features a sturdy, rectangular structure with thick white walls and a distinctive dark, conical roof. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits that detail the region’s mining history, defensive strategies, and local culture. The castle offers panoramic views of Banská Štiavnica and its surrounding hills, making it a perfect spot for history enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Calvary in Banská Štiavnica:

The Calvary (Kalvária) in Banská Štiavnica is a remarkable baroque pilgrimage site built in the 18th century. It comprises a series of chapels leading up to a central church perched on a hill. The path symbolizes the Stations of the Cross, and each chapel depicts a different part of Christ’s journey to crucifixion. The central church, with its twin red-roofed towers, is a striking landmark visible from various points in the town. Spiš Castle is a unique example of a medieval royal castle. It was built at the end of the 12th and the beginning of the 13th century. Already at the end of the 13th century, the castle had almost the current size. The first direct written mention of the castle dates back to 1214. It belonged to the royal dynasties of Arpad and Anjou. In 1464 it passed into the hands of Imrich Zápoľský, the hereditary Spiš County governor. He, together with his brother Stefan, rebuilt the castle from a military fortress into a Gothic noble residence. The Zápoľský family owned the castle until 1528. In 1531 the monarch gave it to Alexius Thurz. Under the Thurz family, the castle was rebuilt into a more comfortable Renaissance manor house. In 1636 the castle passed into the hands of the Csáky family, who owned it until 1949. They also rebuilt the castle according to the needs of the time and their taste. Gradually, they moved to the surrounding manor houses and the castle served as the seat of a military garrison. It gradually decayed until it was destroyed by fire in 1780 and has since lost its significance. In 1993 Spiš Castle was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
