I am really starting to enjoy teaching local electricians here in Ecuador how to do things like an American electrician. I just got off the phone with a great student (local electrician) in Mompiche working on Shaun’s project. It is a fun challenge to explain to someone how to use a multimeter to test the entire electrical system for unwanted ground/neutral connections in the unique accent of the Ecuadorian north coast. I also definitely need to improve my Spanish vocabulary so I don’t have to do linguistic gymnastics to explain things with my limited vocabulary.

Grace and I just visited Hacienda El Molino in San Jose de Minas for a tour of their avocado farm. It was spectacular. I was amazed at how healthy and productive their trees are and learned far more than I expected to from Marcos, the avocado expert. I got to ask Marcos a million questions, and make a video about the place (which I hope to upload in a couple days). Marcos offered to visit my farm to help me diagnose and treat some of the problems with my trees. It was definitely more than worth the $10 for the tour. I feel like I just went to avocado school. https://www.facebook.com/share/iJWSoLUBxkHvLaQo/?mibextid=ox5AEW

One of the difficult things about owning a little farm in the mountains of Ecuador is the sun. Even on cloudy days I can’t work iutside in the middle of the day. When I do I burn, and not even my hat and shirt block enough sunlight, I burn right through my shirt. My solution is to work for a few hours at sunrise and sunset. I’m out here running my weedwacker until it’s too dark to see making use of every minute I can safely work.

The last few days I’ve gotten a lot done, catching up on weeding, cutting grass, creating new compost piles, and planting parsley, beets, chard, rocoto peppers, grape vines, a lemon tree, and a bunch more fava beans. I also planted two weeping willows along the fence line that I hope to train to form a living fence.
