My 10 mile hike to Paute
Here's a photo essay on my recent downhill 10 mile hike to Paute. Fredy (first photo) is our fearless hiking planner and about once a month I start out with about 15 other expats on hiking trips around Cuenca Ecuador. The Paute hike was mostly downhill and we made friends with a burro, walked through a farmer's field, through small little villages, by streams and ended up Corvel restaurant where we ate things like coconut shrimp or grilled salmon while enjoying the hummingbirds that swarmed around us. Just another great day in Cuenca!
Getting our mojo back white water rafting
GIRLS GONE WILD - IN OUR SIXTIES AND STILL KICKING ASS. Here's Sandy on the front, Laura and Donna in the back showing we've still got it while white water rafting in Banos, Ecuador. We are Wonder Women!!!
ECUADORIAN GLEN MILLER GETS US "IN THE MOOD"
ECUADORIAN GLEN MILLER IS GETTING US "IN THE MOOD"!! In Cuenca, Ecuador we have all kinds of street performers. But when this talented musician showed he could rock the famous WWII classic while dancing in a busy intersection - he wowed everyone.
Monteverde is well worth the adventure 😀
The Tram has left the station
The Cuenca Tram has left the station and we are all just giddy about being able to scoot cross city in minutes on this cool, red easy rider! With tourism growing more than 30 percent over the past several years, combined with the continual influx of expats moving to this cosmopolitan, very modern city, the tram marks an important commitment to making affordable public transportation accessible to all…for only 30 cents a ride. The electric-powered tram (Tranvia) runs a 21-kilometer route, which transports riders from the airport to historic downtown, and to popular expat enclaves, like Gringolandia in the northern psrt of the city. The $232 million tram is only the third system completed in South America, the other two being in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Tram car pods carry up to 300 passengers at a time, and it is estimated the system will transport 120,000 passengers a day. One of the key aspects of the Tranvia is that is "green" powered and improves downtown air quality.
Jorge, the tightrope walking gardener
Jardinero on the ledge. We don't have to talk him down. We have to pay Jorge, our gardener, an extra 10 bucks for crawling out on the ledge to weed the little garden outside our front fence.) As you can tell from the photo, he is 25 feet above the sidewalk below. Jorge came up with the idea of doing this. As with most people who are born and live their lives out in the Andes Mountains, Jorge is not afraid of heights.
Making Ceviche de Camarón
Ceviche is a popular dish on the coast of Ecuador. It is a blend of a few marinated vegetables and seafood, served cold in a citrus-based broth – the perfect refreshing meal for those warm days on the beach! The process of preparing one version of this delicious treat, ceviche de camaron, shrimp ceviche. See the full article here https://bit.ly/2GB8Qlo
Dancers practicing for Carnival
Watch out for Water Balloons and spray foam. Carnival, Cuenca's answer to Mardi Gras, starts March 4-5th, and the entire town is getting ready to party prior to Lent. Rowland and I stumbled onto this group practicing their dance moves while walking the dogs on the Yanuncay River trail. Notice the plethera of foam spraying as this is part of the celebration. Walking outside during Carnival includes getting sprayed by water and foam as the fun starts, and thousands will gather for the parade, fiestas, partying and eating sweets - to get ready for the 40 days of fasting. I too will be getting my water balloons ready to join in the fun water fights. All in good fun! donna
Talented construction worker
You always see amazing things in Cuenca, Ecuador. This talented man must be Houdini. He balances on one hand and his feet never touch the ground. For a bit of change, he spins around and shakes your hand. I can not figure out how he does this but he stands outside for hours balancing on his arm. Street performers are common at Parque Calderon in downtown Cuenca and delight the crowds!
Can you get good takeout chinese food in Cuenca?
Can you get good takeout chinese food in Cuenca? Here I try out one of my favorite rituals from the US -- eating takeout food on a Friday night while watching crime shows. Will the new chinese restaurant that just opened down the street from my house in Cuenca match my favorite entrees in the States. Watch as my shepherd, Greta, and I see if we can recreate one of our favorite meal experiences in Cuenca! donna
Comedy Show in the Sand
As we took our evening walk along the malecon in Salinas, Ecuador yesterday evening, we came across this scene. You often see entertainment on the beach - in this case, a few aspiring thespians were acting out a short farce. Note the wonderful costuming for the "lady in red".
