**Kitichi-Miniss** The Great Island. (Grand Island) The hidden gem of rocks right in front of our eyes 😍 Grand Island is a unique little spot right off the shores of Munising in Lake Superior. The land covers 22 square miles , about 9 miles long and 5 miles wide (about the size of Manhattan!) the Ojibwe tribe originally inhabited the island and peacefully lived along the shores for hundreds of years. Artifacts can be found from over 3000 years ago. Fur traders used the Island as a large fur trading post due to the island extensive beaver population on Echo Lake. Echo lake has the largest lake created by a society of beavers with a dam over 1500 feet long and 700 years old. However, once the beaver population was decimated, the fur traders carried on to other plentiful areas. Over the years, many other explorers came through the island as a resting place to explore the beautiful cliffs and wildlife. By the late 1800s, the first permanent white settler named Abraham Williams built his home there and eventually more settlers moved to the island. The island then became a game preserve and cabins and roads were built. These infrastructures can still be seen there today! During this time, many logging quarrying operations were held on the island by the Cleveland Cliffs Mining Company. Then in the late 1900s Grand Island became a national recreation area controlled by the USFS. It is now a protected area preserving the wildlife and wild land. Because of this protection grand Island host the largest concentration of blackbear in the state! 🐻. Our Grand Island Trip is just around the corner and we have some spots left! Our third adventure spot is the Porcupine Mountains! This season we are doing two Porkies trips. Choose between a rugged loop that takes you past Lake of the Clouds, Government Peak, and Mirror Lake, or a loop that starts on the shores of Lake Superior and then ascends up the Big Carp River to Lake of the Clouds. Peak fall foliage is expected, adventure is guaranteed!

Our second adventure spot is Grand Island, on the southern shore of Lake Superior. Grand Island may be just a stone's throw away from Munising, but a backpacking trip here takes you to a different world, where rocky beaches, stunning vistas, and the cool waters of Superior are your constant companions. Our five day circumnavigation allows you to see the whole of the island. Watch the sun rise from Freighter Point, on the northeast corner of Grand Island, and then watch it set later that night from Preservation Point on the western shore. Perfect for beginners, and challenging enough for seasoned hikers, Grand Island has something for everyone. Join us in August!

Isle Royale Adventures

This week, we are showcasing the amazing places we will be adventuring in this season, and we're starting with the crown jewel of Lake Superior, Isle Royale National Park!

Isle Royale is a rugged island smack dab in the middle of the world's largest freshwater lake. Her rugged forests, rocky cliffs, and challenging, technical terrain make Isle Royale a world renowned location for backpacking, complete with the solitude that comes with being one of the least visited National Parks. This year, PackRatz is offering three trips to Isle Royale. You'll watch sunsets over Superior, enjoy delicious meals under one of the darkest skies in the US, and maybe, if you're lucky, get a peek at the Northern Lights!
