When one travels, it's very easy to follow a guidebook and visit all the tourist spots; after all, one should visit and learn a lot from those sites. However, to get in-grain with the local culture and become an active participant, one should visit non-tourist areas.

Here are some ideas of what one can do after seeing all the sites.
🥦Go to the grocery store or a local food market. This is perfect if one loves to eat; visiting a grocery store or food market should be a place to visit. Food is a big part of one's culture, and it's an experience to see the big and little differences of how food is displayed, packaged and what the shopping centers look like.
🗻Go on a hike. When one travels to a different place, it is fascinating to get to know the local biodiversity. One gets emersed in the natural habitat of an area plus you might meet fellow hikers.
📚The local library. Although we have the technology, the library is a place of cultural importance. There, one could see cultural artifacts, see the library's unique outer/inner designs and, of course, see how the library serves its community.
👗Vintage Stores. A vintage store is an excellent way for one to recycle; plus you might get a unique souvenir.

💚We have a question for you, what are the non-touristy things you do? Let us know in the comments.

Controversially said, taking a plane is probably one of the worst things you can do for the environment. No doubt, when one travels, especially internationally, it does leave a large carbon footprint. Luckily, there are a few great eco-friendly travel products you can use to help reduce your environmental footprint on your next trip.

🧳A reusable bag: When one carries a reusable bag, it helps reduce single-use plastic consumption on your travels.

🧴Shampoo/conditioner bars: When one opts for a bar instead of a single-use shampoo bottle, one reduces their use of single-use plastic. Also, they are more light-weight and compact than their bottled counterparts, so they require less space during transport relative to the same amount of washes with liquid shampoo

🤓The use of a bamboo toothbrush. Bamboo is biodegradable, whereas plastic ones may be in a landfill. When one uses a compostable and fully biodegradable toothbrush, they are helping the environment.

🦟Opt for natural mosquito repellent(must be eco-friendly): Mosquito repellent can be terrible for you and the environment. However, some people need it as some of us attract more mosquitoes than others. Do your research; there are repellents that are better for you and the environment.

What should we put in our suitcases to reduce our carbon footprint when we travel? Do let us know in the comments.

Did you know Sunday, February 27th, isWorld NGO day? You may be asking, what is that?

🌎World NGO Day is an international day dedicated to recognizing, celebrating, and honoring all non-governmental and nonprofit organizations. This means celebrating the people behind them that contribute to society all year round.

🌎These groups are "independent from government influence and are not-for-profit."

🌎What's great about these groups, they provide benefits to individuals and communities that may not be available. This, in turn, may improve neighborhoods and the lives of the people who live in them.

🌎 NGOs provide a variety of services from medical aid, financial services, environmental research, educational support, and crisis intervention.

Why is it important to us?

🌎We're passionate, not only about travel but about doing it in a way that can make a positive impact on the world around us. That means supporting organizations that are NGOs.

🌎So Happy NGO DAY, we would love to thank NGOs for everything they do.

It's that time of year; we see cupids and roses in every shop.
We are saying to ourselves, "wasn't it just Christmas?"

Well, it's Valentine's Day, and whether you have a special someone or are spending that time with friends. Now it's the time to give a little love not only to your friends, family, and/or significant other but also to the environment!

Here are some ways you can have a sustainable Valentine👇

❤ DYI CARDS: Nothing says "I love you" more than a handwritten, homemade card to your sweetheart. You can make it with recycled paper and cards from previous holidays!

❤ Now the Chocolate. Try options that are crafter locally, using fair-trade ingredients. Most local candy shoppes will highlight that they use fair-trade ingredients but it does not hurt to ask! You'll be supporting fair-paid workers and farmers that grow the chocolates in safe and environmentally friendly working conditions.

❤ Skip the over-priced meals and over-the-top restaurants and make a home-cooked meal with organic, sustainable food. We know getting to a restaurant is hard these days, so save your money and make something home-cooked. We know your sweetheart will appreciate the effort of a homecooked meal.

What are you doing this Valentine's Day? Let us know in the comments below.

53% of global travelers are willing to pay more for products that are environmentally friendly -- are you one of these 53%?

While it is nice to see this number be over 50%, we can’t wait to see this grow into 60%, 75%, and beyond!
We, as well as expect to see this number grow during the rest of 2021 and well into 2022! It starts with education, and accessibility. We enjoy seeing more and more companies offering sustainable options, or swapping their single-use materials for multi-use and reusable!

Travel like a local! Do this anywhere for the best results :)

🌎 Ask the professionals
Start your exploration by finding out what the professionals suggest. As you’re planning your visit search for the local Convention and Visitors Bureau

🌎 Check local media
Explore the websites of your destination’s newspaper, radio and TV stations.

🌎 Talk to the locals
Once you arrive to your destination, ask the people you interact with - taxi drivers, cashiers, etc

🌎 Shop local
Get your coffee at the nearest locally-owned coffee shop.

Plan your dinner at the restaurant that has just one location instead of the ones where you can find anywhere

🌎 Take public transportation
This way you could see a side of the city that you wouldn’t see any other way

What’s your favorite way to explore a new place?

𝐄𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟏 – 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐘𝐨𝐮

Celebrate TODAY, no matter where you are on Earth.

Due to Covid-19, this year’s events will be mainly online. The aim is to celebrate, raise awareness, learn, engage with each other and have fun.

Who would not want to celebrate the diverse inhabitants of Earth, discover who most needs our help and find out more about what we can all do? If the pandemic has taught us anything as a global species it must be that humans in modern times, regardless of wealth, know what it is like to feel under threat.

Make a difference while you travel.

Some say travel is the one thing in life that really makes you richer. Others, they say it’s helping people that creates a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

At Charistay we believe you can combine the two.

We want to help you combine your love of travel and joy of helping others, all in one simple way.

We’re passionate, not only about travel, but about doing it in a way that can make a positive impact on the world around us. Whilst tourism brings in valuable income to an area, it can also come at a cost. Rising tourist numbers mean, for some places, an increase in environmental and social issues as they cannot cope with the demand on infrastructure. If this trend continues, these beautiful locations may be forced to close their doors to tourists for good.
