Hawaiian surfer breaks world record by riding 78ft wave off Portugal

The Guinness World Records has recognised a 44-year-old professional surfer from Hawaii for catching a 78ft wave off the coast of Portugal, saying the November feat beats a 2008 record for the biggest ridden by more than 12 inches.

Thought is it would be fun to post daily updates of the 2800 mile journey across the Pacific Ocean as part of our Kauai.com team will be leaving Kauai Wednesday to fly to Mexico to sail our trimaran Meshach home to Kauai. This was our family home for a year of adventure away from Kauai.

The average time spent to get to Kauai from the west coast via jet plane is 5 hours. Can you guess how long it will take to sail our 45 foot trimaran from La Paz Mexico to Kauai?

**Crowds flock to Oahu’s North Shore to watch largest waves of winter season**

In this photo taken Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, surf breaks at the Bonzai Pipeline on the north shore of Oahu. The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning as giant surf was expected to hit the north and west shores of most of the Hawaiian Islands through Wednesday. Surf heights will be 25 to 35 feet along north shores and 15 to 25 feet along west shores of Niihau.

You're in for future misfortune if you take away lava rocks from the volcanoes. Over the years, literally thousands of vacationers actually have mailed rocks back after experiencing bad luck once they got back home. In fact, it's often suggested that you leave behind everything you find in Hawaii ("Take only pictures; leave only footprints") — but that caution smells as if it might have retailing interests behind it.
