Doi Luang Chiang Dao is Thailand’s third tallest peak, accessible via a fairly easy drive 1.5 hours from Chiang Mai and surrounded by mountain after mountain in every direction. In a word, it’s stunning.
The hike itself is also lovely. It’s steep in parts, though not overly so, weaving through a jungle over mountain saddles and up to a peak that gives you what must be the most beautiful and expansive view in Thailand. After comparing with Doi Inthanon, this one might not be as tall but it’s so much better.
It’s pretty hard to find any concrete information online about this hike. I was left with more questions than answers before attempting it myself: Does one need a guide? Is it necessary to book weeks in advance? Is it possible to do it in one day?We arrived at the park area well after dark the night before we aimed to do the hike. Everywhere I might be able to inquire was closed, so all I could really do was just go and see. Thankfully it worked out, but for those who would like to plan ahead a bit more, here’s what I found out about hiking Doi Luang Chiang Dao

Khao Chang Phuak (Mountain) is a great attraction for visitors who like to challenge an adventure journey. Not only visitors need to walk up on steep way to the topmost of the mountain, but just before the mountain peak, there is a challenging spot that make many of visitors decided not to move forward also. On the top of the mountain, visitors can see a beautiful scene which will make them forgot how exhaust they are. Khao Chang Phuak is located at Thong Pha Phum district.

Khao Chang Phuak has a nick name as Sharp Mountain Ridge, because the walkway on the mountain ridge is really narrow. This mountain is approximately 1250 meters high from the sea level, which can be ranked as the third highest mountain in Kanchanaburi. At the topmost area, visitors can see a fascinating panoramic view without any large trees blocking their sight.

Before hiking up on this mountain, visitors need to make a contact with an officer of Thong Pha Phum National Park for registering visitors' name first. The limit of visitors that can go hiking to this mountain per day is only 60 people, since the camping area is not large enough to support a larger number of visitors to stay. Visitors usually come here to stay over a night.

This hiking trip starts from behind Etong Village. Visitors need to climb up about 8 kilometers to reach the camping point on the mountain, which usually takes approximately 4-5 hours. Not far from the camping point, there is a challenging spot for visitors to climb up before reaching the peak of the mountain. Some people decide not to reach the peak because of this spot. It is very small way to climb up and visitors can fall down from the cliff on both sides. However, in the present, there is a rope provided by the park and there are a few officers stay there to support visitors to climb up to the top peak of the mountain.

To visit Khao Chang Phuak, visitors need to go to Thong Pha Phum National Park to make a contact with the officer. In this case, visitors should take a Bus from Mochit 2, Bangkok, depart from 5 AM, because after get off the bus at Thong Pha Phum district, visitors have to take a yellow Baht Bus (Songthaew) at Thong Pha Phum market on 10.30 AM (not sure for the other time available). It will take about 2 hours to the national park. By the way, to visit Thong Pha Phum National park with package tour may be available.

Marcel Proust, a French novelist and adventurer once said: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” Sometimes you don’t need to climb the highest mountains to experience the beauty of the world. Doi Mon Jong proves exactly that.
Doi Mon Jong is located in the Omkoi Wildlife Sanctuary near Chang Mai in the northern part of Thailand. You don’t need to be an expert in trekking to reach these beautiful view tops overlooking green landscapes. Doi Mon Jong is the golden mountain of Thailand, full of lovely scenery, a fascinating local community and fields of rhododendron- a rare flower that can only be found in these parts.
Getting to Doi Mon Jong
After arriving at Chang Mai however way you like, you need to hop onto a bus from the main city to the Omkoi prefecture which takes around three hours. Just note that there are typically two buses that leave each day to Omkoi from Changmai. Once at Omkoi, you can go to Doi Mon Jong by a truck, driven by one of the local villagers. It will pass the tourist service office before entering a breath-taking trail up to the mountain. The roads are bumpy, full of mud and require you to dodge branches as you hold on for your dear life for about 40 minutes. It is adventure at it’s best! Only four-wheel vehicles can go up the road as they get tend to get washed away every year from mudslides. We arrived at 7:00am to Omkoi and started to hike up at around 7:45 am.

Doi Mon Jong is only open from November to February (we went in November) and there is no admission fee. If you want, you can get some locals to climb the trail with you and carry the heavier items like cookware or tents, which is useful if you are travelling in a group. High season is during the months of December and January and is when a lot of tourists visit from Chang Mai. Climbing in the morning is highly recommended as there will be less people on the trail.
After parking at the end of the road, we were greeted by a golden Buddha which was where we began the hike following the trail up to the peak. The cool breeze keeps you nice and fresh as you enter a maze like path which keeps taking you higher and higher through the forest. While the trail is generally easy, there are moments when you need to climb over trees, slipping on fallen leaves as you carefully step over cliffs. Warning: This trail was not made for clumsy people.
We stopped at around 11:30am for lunch when we were about halfway through the trail. We didn’t know that there was still some distance to the Hua Sing peak which we wanted to reach before sunset. Coming from the busy streets of Bangkok where we live, it was quite beautiful to just be at peace with nature and escape the city life. We continued on crossing fields of tall grass as we slowly started reaching the first signs that we were nearing the peak. We laughed out loud when we saw signs that pointed into what literally translated to the “Dog Panting” trail.

Phanoen Thung Camp is 950 m above the sea level, 15 km from Ban Krang Camp Site, 30 km from Dan Khao Sam Yot Checkpoint and 49 km from the HQ. The bit of road from Ban Krang is dirt road, only accessible with 4WD.

A restaurant, information bureau and toilets/showers can be found in the camp area. Tents and sleeping bags can be rent at the camp site visitor center.

The camp is very popular for it's view points and birdwatching locations in and around the camp area. Due to high altitude, the location is ideal for watching many highland birds such as hawks and eagles.

There are no official longer trails around the campsite. There is an approximately 8 km long trail to Khao Phanoen Thung peak, but it hasn't been maintained for a while and closed for the time being. This peak was accessible by a days hiking, normally required a nights stay at the top with a ranger and strict permission from HQ needed.

Like in Ban Krang Camp porcupines visits the restaurant and camping ground every evening from around 7-8 p.m.. Various other species like boars, partridges and also rarely binturongs and bears also visits this spot. There is an interesting spot behind the restaurant where yellow-throated martens frequently visits to eat food leftovers thrown from the kitchen. It can be seen from the view point side of the restaurant. Before deciding to sit and wait for any animals to show up, it is wise to ask personel if any of these or other species seen lately. The area around Phanoen Thung is one of best places to see cloused leopards with a bit luck.

Phanoen Thung Camp viewpointsShow on map
There are three view points in the camp area with only few hundred meters distance from each other. The main viewpoint looks out towards Tanaosi Range on Myanmar's border and has a magnificent view. Various exotic birds such as hornbills, barbets, eagles, bulbuls can be seen. Second viewpoint is located next to the restaurant in the camp, looks towards north west and the last one is next to the visitor center, looks towards north east.

Royal residenceShow on map
Located 700 meters north west from Phanoen Thung at the top of a hill, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej stayed in this place when he visited the national park few times in the past. The flag raised on the hill can be seen from Phanoen Thung. The area has great view on most directions. A third of the way uphill there is a big tree on the right side where the very rare ratchet tailed treepie may be seen. To get there walk west for 400 meters, turn right, walk around the barrier and continue uphill.

On top of a small hill in Chiang Rai is the Wat Ngam Muang temple that enshrines the ashes of the city’s founder in its chedi.

Getting to the temple grounds requires a climb of a stairway flanked by Naga serpents, a mythological water creature. The serpents heads extend high over the temple grounds outer wall while the body extends all the way up along the stairs to the temple grounds.

Climbing the stairs the viharn of the Wat Ngam Muang comes in sight. The viharn’s facade and entrance door are beautifully decorated with intricate wood carvings depicting Lanna style motifs and Thewada figures (a kind of celestial beings).

Inside the viharn facing the entrance sits a large Buddha image in the subduing Mara posture on a pedestal surrounded by smaller images. The large pillars are decorated with flower motifs. The stairs to the viharn’s entrance contain Nagas, whose bodies stretch up to the top of the stairs and then both ways across the balustrade of the portico.

Mae Salong's early history centered on the o***m trade of the Golden Triangle. Its recent history was shaped by the 93rd Division of the Chinese Nationalist Army that refused to surrender to Chinese communists after the Nationalist Kuomintang government was routed in 1949.

Unlike most of the unrelenting nationalists that fled to Taiwan in 1949, a force of 12,000 escaped from Yunnan to Burma and continued an insurgency against the People's Republic. They were at first supported by Taiwan and the USA, but diplomatic shifts—which included US ambivalence towards the nationalists and improved relations between Burma and communist China—later led to the partial disbanding of the nationalist forces in Burma. While thousands left for Thailand in 1961, many remained in Burma.

The soldiers who settled in Mae Salong kept it as a military base in preparation for an eventual counter-attack against communist China. They funded their arms purchases with o***m production and rubbed shoulders with notorious Burmese warlord and drug baron Khun Sa, who lived a few kilometres away in Ban Hin Taek and who initially trained with the Kuomintang before founding his own army.

In the 1970s the Thai government struck a deal with the renegades: the battle-hardened soldiers would help them fight Thailand's own communist insurgents in exchange for legitimacy and Thai citizenship. Part of their going straight involved the soldiers' cessation of o***m production in favour of the cultivation of mushrooms and above all oolong tea, which is now Mae Salong's main product.

Some guidebooks wax lyrical about today's Mae Salong as a miniature Yunnanese Shangri-La, but if you come with this image in mind you may be a little disappointed: at first glance, Mae Salong looks much like the little Thai town it is. However, the crisp climate, the lingering Chinese influence, delicious native Yunnanese dishes and small hotels and guesthouses catering to visitors still make this a popular getaway, worth visiting even on a hurried day trip, but worth stopping in overnight.

I feel like I’ve been writing this post for ages … but a broken laptop and sketchy internet have been holding me up. But hey – that’s life on the road and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
I’m currently in Spain but let’s flash back a week to Chiang Rai, a small city in the north of Thailand. It’s famous for the White Temple, it’s proximity to the Golden Triangle, and as a starting point for hill tribe treking. But we didn’t come to do any of those things.
Despite being hugely popular with local Thai tourists (and being listed on TripAdvisor as one of the top things to do in Chiang Rai), we were told time and time again – by our guest house, by the travel agent, and by our tour guide – that foreigners rarely come to visit.
Which, once you’ve seen photos, is very difficult to understand.

Situated mainly in Phitsanulok Province nearly 130 km from Phitsanulok city center, this 307 km² mountainous park extends east into Loei and Phetchabun provinces nearly 40km from the Laotian border. Due to its rugged terrain and strategic location, the park was an ideal place for guerrilla warfare and became a stronghold for Communist Party of Thailand (CPT) back in 70’s, the remains of their camps and hides are one of the main attractions of the park. Phu Hin Rong Kla was declared as a national park in 1984, only two years after defeat of the the insurgents.

Phu Kao Phu Pan Kham National Park has 322 square-kilometers area covers part of Nong Bua Lamphu Province, in the lower part of Udon Thani Province and upper part of Khon Kaen Province. The main geology of this area is mountains of sandstone and dry dipterocarp forests which are the habitats of various wildlife and plant species.

Phu Kao looks like frying pan which has great plain in the center. It can be assumed that this area is the remains of a volcano extinguished millions of years ago, or layers of rock in this area bending up to being mountain ridges. Phu Kao Mountain Range is two peripheral lines of mountain; the outer line consists of high mountains; the inner line consists of lower mountains which its hillside is not much slope. Most of the area alternates between high and low, and some are plains.

In the southwest of the mountain is a lower vast-plain of Lam Nam Phong which, after finished building Ubol Ratana Dam, now a lake becomes half area of Phu Phan Kham. If you refer to a small and quiet town surrounded by the beautiful nature, the name of "Chiang Khan" in Loei would come into the mind of many Thai people. Today we will take you to another trip around Isan and will introduce you to Phu Tok mountain.
Phu Tok is the mountain in Chiang Khan. It is a popular view point for tourists who wish to see a magical sea of fog covering the mountains at the time of sunrise. At the top of Phu Tok, you will see the beautiful scenery of Chiang Khan, mountains and Mekong River. If you want to see the sunrise, you should wake up at 5.30 am and get a Tuk-Tuk to pick you up from your hotel at 6 am. Normally the Tuk-Tuk ride to Phu Tok should cost 100 baht per person for round trip. If the driver is asking for more, you should consider negotiating the price. The Tuk-Tuk will take you to the foot of the mountain and wait for you there. However, if you have your own car, you can easily drive to the foot of the mountain and leave your car there as there is a parking lot nearby.
A drive to Phu Tok from our hotel which was conveniently located just near the famous Walking Street took us about 10-15 minutes.
When you arrive to the foot of the mountain, you can only use the public pickup truck service provided by the Chiang Khan district to go to the top of Phu Tok. You cannot drive the car up by yourself because the road there is narrow and dangerous and there are no parking spaces on the top.

Phu Kradueng
Accessible by a challenging long hike, Phu Kradueng National Park is one of the most popular national parks in Thailand by local tourists. Due to it's remote location it is less known by foreign tourists.

Situated in Phu Kradueng District of Loei Province in central north Thailand, the park is popular for it's many longer trails, the cold winter season, number of waterfalls and viewpoints. Unlike most other major national parks in the country, Phu Kradueng National Park is accessible by public transportation from all nearby provinces and Bangkok.

The park is mainly a single big mountain mesa, covering total of 350 km² with highest point at 1,316 meters asl. The flat summit plateau of the mountain where the major attractions are located has an area of around 60 km², averaging an altitude of around 1,200 to 1,250 meters asl.

The forests in the park are deciduous dipterocarp forest below 800 meter asl, gradually up found decidious dipterocarp forest, mixed deciduous forest, dry evergreen forest and at the top areas hill evergreen forest. At mid elevations mixed bamboo forests are common, at the plateau pine and oak trees dominating at most parts.

Phu Kradueng National Park is part of Western Isaan Forest Complex including three other national parks and four wildlife sanctuaries covering 4,594 km² all together. The other protected sites within the complex are; Nam Nao National Park, Tat Mok National Park, Phu Pa Man National Park, Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Pha Phung Wildlife Sanctuary, Phu Pha Daeng Wildlife Sanctuary and Taboa Huai Yai Wildlife Sanctuary.

The park is closed for forest recovery during the rainy seaons from June to September, otherwise open every day, including on public holidays. During the holidays and week-ends, the park gets very busy, on the peak days of the year extremely busy.
