Our house provides the perfect self catering accommodation. We purchased the house in 2006 as a 'rustico' because of its stunning location and renovated it to a high standard. It is situated on a hillside around 1km from the lake by road and only a short walk via the numerous paths that wind down the hillside. The house comprises of a double bedroom, single bedroom, twin mezzanine bedroom, bathroom, lounge diner, kitchen, and terraced garden. Unlike many of the holiday houses we have parking directly outside so there are no long walks with luggage and shopping.
Guests are very welcome to use all spaces and their contents such as books, DVDs, games equipment, kayak, inflatables, outside furniture, BBQ, shade sail and any essentials left in kitchen cupboards.
This house has been attracting holiday makers for over ten years. This has included families, couples, groups of friends and hikers who return regularly.
The position of the house allows access to a whole host of fantastic walks, many of which can be located on the Pianello Del Lario commune website if you are looking for a local route, many other famous walks in the surrounding area are advertised online. It is also well located for all of the famous tourist attractions such as Menaggio and Belaggio.
Local towns and villages make for a great day out, sampling all Italian culture has to offer - great pizza, wine and gelato!
The Italian National Trust (alongside many other privately owned property) has a variety of local villas which are open to explore. Some local ones include Villa Carlotta and Balbianello (my personal favourite).
There are plenty of places to relax in the sun; locally there are lakeside beaches in Pianello and Cremia, or if it’s a pool you prefer, there are lidos in both Menaggio and Gravedona. Menaggio is a large Lido, with lots of sun beds, a children’s pool and a large main pool. It also has access to the lakeside and usually a floating blow-up assault-course which is even tempting for adults, you can buy food and drinks from the lido also. Menaggio centre is a short walk from here. A stop off at the mini-golf course is always good fun.
To explore other lakeside towns such as Varenna and Bellagio, you can hop on a ferry from Menaggio.
If it’s a change of scenery you are after, we are close to the Swiss boarder which is best accessed from Menaggio. The closest Swiss City to explore would be Lugano. However remember to take your passport!
As well as this there are many beautiful mountain locations such as Bormio, a famous spa town and St Moritz.
In Dongo, nestled up the mountain, there is also a high ropes adventure park, great for the kids!
You are truly spoilt for good restaurants! Some of the best food I have sampled in the past 12 years visiting our home is the traditional mountain establishments nearby. Details of these are left at the house.
For a day on the lake - rent-a-boat is always good fun and allows you to see the lake from a different perspective - just don’t get spotted being nosey in front of Clooney’s place!
Despite all of the wonderful things to do, I have to say, some of my favourite times have been relaxing in the garden in the sun, with a book, and a beautiful view that never gets old!
Flights
Take advantage of our flexible attitude towards change over days and look for cheap flights. We use Ryan Air, Easy Jet and Fly Be into Milan Malpensa or Milan Bergamo and then hire a car. It’s only a short drive of about 90kms which takes 1.5 to 2 hours. We can give more advice on car hire and travel if required but its really simple to organise.
Drive
Its an easy drive from the UK and I particularly enjoy going over the Alps via Switzerland into Italy. It’s is all main road / motorway except the last 30 miles or so.
Price
We keep the pricing very simple and ask for £80 per night except in July and August when we ask for £120 per night. A cleaning charge of £100 is added to all bookings. A £100 deposit is taken and final payment is requested four weeks before your holiday. Once payment is made we send all the documentation you require, which gives information about key access, restaurants, etc, and more Ideas for your holiday.
Shopping
There are ample supermarkets locally if you want to cater for yourself. However, there is a large shopping centre at the north of the lake (20 minutes drive) and even a lidl.
