"Our family arrived in New Zealand with nothing but four suitcases. My parents were very much overdressed for the occasion; my father wearing a dark grey checkered suit, blue shirt and tie, and my mother, a bright green blazer and pencil skirt set. At that time people used to dress up for air travel, however, we barely needed to set foot into the country to realize that the dress code in New Zealand is very casual.

With their Iraqi passports, unrecognized professional qualifications and IELTS Band 7.8 – level English, my parents had to rely on their existing knowledge and experience to somehow make a new home out of very little.

Amazingly, they managed to hide their struggles quite well, so much so, that I only recently found out from my father that there was a time when he had but a mere $35 in his bank account. He recalls the defeated feeling of needing to accept a food donation box from the Salvation Army, what he considered to be an all-time low.

"As I take the stairs down to the platform, I recall a mural outside with the word “home” painted in white letters on a sky-blue background. I once took a selfie in front of it. It’s long gone, but otherwise the station looks exactly how I remember it.

I’m from a different version of this place, but at least some things stay the same.

It’s almost time to fly from Chicago back to Paris, then to Poland for the holidays. What a peculiar feeling – you leave home, fly for eight hours, only to end up… at home." - .hendo 🤍

"For most of my life, I had spent so much time discerning what it was that I truly wanted. Questions would swarm in my head. Would I act too quickly? Would I regret it? Wouldn’t it be better to save money? Wouldn’t it be better to wait for 'the right time'? When exactly was 'the right time'?"

As I transition into my thirty-first year, I am forming another bead. This was, is, and will be my time.

During the last session of each retreat, we host a closing ceremony and each participant receives their Certificate of Completion.

It takes something to join a writing retreat.

It takes curiousity.
It takes courage.
It takes a desire and willingness to go for it and share your story.
