Ambon Shipwreck: SS Aquilo (Duke of Sparta)
•

There’s not much information found on this Ambon wreck.
The Duke of Sparta was built in 1940 at the William Gray shipyard in West Hartlepool. She was sold to the Grimaldi brothers in Naples in 1951 and was renamed the SS Aquilo. The ship was bombed in Ambon harbor during Operation Haik – a clandestine Cold War CIA operation against Indonesian communist rebels in 1958.
The initial bombing did significant damage to the Aquilo, but not enough to immediately sink her. It took a month to finally have her down on the 27th May.
•
This Ambon Wreck is the home of hard and soft corals, as well as sea creatures. With the length of 134 meter and with 17 meter, she certainly has a lot to offer for wide as well as macro lovers.
•
Note that is sitting in a busy harbor, hence visibility won’t be in your favor, most of the time the water can be quite milky.

Hello, I am a scorpion fish (Scorpaenidae) I am good in playing hide and seek as I naturally blend in with my surroundings. Although I seem to be harmless due to my motionlessness, I got sharp spine covered in venomous mucus. Be sure to seek for medical help, if you ever got in contact with me. I feed on small fishes, snails, and coral reefs.

I miss the freedom to travel any part of the world freely. Didn’t realize it was such a privilege till the world suddenly closed almost overnight.

Yes, am sad. So much tears shed and still, nothing changed. I know things will never be the same. I often asked myself, “How long can I hold, till I also wither and die?”

This is hard, for you and for me. Staying strong might be easier said than believed, however, together we can get through this. .

You see why I love diving here, even the water at the port is very clear.

After such a long boat ride from Makassar, am back in Wangi-Wangi Island. Dropped my bags & immediately geared up. All the sweat and long hours on the boat are paid off. Happy to be diving again.

Who would’ve thought the sun would set so beautifully in the middle of the city? Here I am standing at my bedroom window, watching the sun beautifully set over the city. I am grateful to be able to see and capture this moment.

Look around you and find the beauty in your neighborhood. Mine was taken in the of Makassar, where I have spent most of my July. I love how round the sun in this city.

Some path are meant to be unfinished.
•
I soar the sky the green grass on my left, the blue water on my right. I never thought this would be my last flight and my line would end without returning home.
I remember taking off from that black sandy beach of Akarena, near a boat. Some people were having a picnic, some were playing, some were swimming, there are some fishermen also, I flew passed all of them. The weather was just right, no wind, just a sunny afternoon, when I suddenly tumbled and went missing.
•
The other day we lost a dear friend, someone who was very friendly and would always smile. He stayed very positive till the end. You fought your battle well, Ko Iwan, we love you, but our dear Father loves you more.

So much has happened, so much has changed. Life has been pretty good. I am really grateful to have these people in life: my lovely family, my dear friends, supports that came from all of you, even those that I haven’t even met in real life, the kind words in DMs. I can only say, stay strong, be safe and be cautious.
