A new team (Poppy, Julie, Kerry and Diego) have taken over here at the HPB Kings Arms Hotel in ( ) and they decided to celebrate with a 1930’s party in honour of the pub - doubling as the in the 1970’s BBC TV adaptation of , which was set during the 1930s. 🥧✨

The guests were great sports with some even donning some period costumes.

After hosting a baking competition some years ago, the new team thought that it was ‘pie’ time to do another and what better time than during ?! Both sweet and savoury pies were baked and enjoyed by those who attended along with a pint at 1930’s prices to help wash them down. 🍻 https://okt.to/28Mrgl

A new team (Poppy, Julie, Kerry and Diego) have taken over at the HPB Kings Arms Hotel and they decided to celebrate with a 1930's party in honour of the pub - doubling as the Drovers Arms in the 1970's BBC TV adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small, which was set during the 1930s. 🥧

The guests were great sports with some even donning some period costumes.

After hosting a baking competition some years ago, the new team thought that it was 'pie' time to do another and what better time than during British Pie Week?! Both sweet and savoury pies were baked and enjoyed by those who attended along with a pint at 1930's prices to help wash them down. 🍻

Best In Show 🏆

Last year’s 'Dog of the Year' competition within our in-house magazine attracted scores of entrants, only some of which we were able to feature within those pages – but all of which have captured our attention, and our hearts, including;

Meet Ice (left) and Chevvy, respectively an English setter and a Gordon setter much loved by owner Lucy M. Ice is, apparently, “a bit of a diva… he loves nothing more than being the centre of attention”, while Chevvy is “far more reserved”, but both loved their recent holiday at HPB Lodge Yard. 🐾

Preparing the garden for winter might seem obvious; but it’s an important factor in helping it to look its best in spring, summer and autumn. 🏵️

“I can’t really talk to you about soil types,” says Helen Guy, in charge of HPB Lodge Yard’s RHS award-winning gardens & alongside assistant Matt. “Because our gardens are terraced, we have a clay-based soil here – it’s actually imported from Cumbria, but it holds water better.

We have seven compost bays here, three of which are ready to use, so we’ll be laying that down as a winter mulch.” But there are other jobs to do before that, says Helen, head gardener at our home for the past 3½ years. “We’ll be cutting back all borders & perennials, and dividing the perennials throughout the winter. 🌱

We’ll lift the dahlias and store them in tubs of dry compost, ready for replanting next . We’ll be pruning dormant trees & shrubs, and our roses – we have ‘general’ roses and rugosa roses here; both have done well this year, as have our potentillas, and spiraea, and we’re hoping for more of the same in 2024. “We don’t have much in the way of pests here,” adds Helen, “just the box-hedge caterpillar – but we seem to be on top of that.”

Talking of pests – or things to be got rid of – Helen has a top tip. “Two, actually,” she says. “First, because of the risk to sheep (of which there are many in this part of the world) we’re not allowed to use chemicals here; but a mix of white vinegar, salt and just a little washingup liquid makes a very effective weed-killer. It’ll clear moss from your patio too, and it’s harmless to domestic pets (as well as sheep). 🌿

Second, if you have a problem with slugs, unwashed sheeps’ wool – if you can get it where you live, we have it in abundance – is much better than pellets.” 🐑
