The generosity of The Sir Percival David Foundation allows this significant collection to continue to be on display and benefit visitors both in the UK and across the globe.

Sir Percival David (1892–1964) was a visionary British businessman whose passion for China inspired him to study the language to a very high level. Throughout his life he collected ceramics in Europe, Japan, Hong Kong and China, building the finest private collection of Chinese ceramics.

Sir Percival was determined to use his collection to inform and inspire people and to keep it on public view in its entirety. It has been on loan to the British Museum since 2009 in the specially designed bilingual Room 95, where it has been studied and enjoyed by millions of visitors. Its bilingual online catalogue can be accessed all over the world.

Thanks to this donation the British Museum will hold one of the most important collections of Chinese ceramics of any public institution outside the Chinese speaking world, numbering 10,000 objects.

The Ashmolean announces that it has successfully raised £4.48 million to secure the acquisition of Fra Angelico’s exquisite Crucifixion for the public. The acquisition has been made possible thanks to lead donations from the Ashmolean’s Chairman, The Lord Lupton CBE, and David and Molly Lowell Borthwick; major grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, and The Headley Trust; the generosity of over fifty major donors; and a successful public appeal.

The magnificent work, which has been in the UK for about two centuries, was sold to an overseas buyer and was at risk of leaving the country. Due to the work’s value and importance to the nation, the Reviewing Committee on the Exports of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest, which is supported by the Arts Council, recommended that the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport put a temporary export license stop - known as a deferral - on the work. In January 2024, the export deferral was announced, allowing Ashmolean nine months to express interest in acquiring the work and raise the necessary funds to keep the painting in the UK.

The Ashmolean announces that it has successfully raised £4.48 million to secure the acquisition of Fra Angelico’s exquisite Crucifixion.

£10million awarded to help save Birnbeck Pier

The unique Victorian landmark has been given a lifeline on its 160th anniversary, thanks to National Lottery players.
Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare will be saved from being lost forever and brought a step closer to reopening to the public.

The project, led by North Somerset Council in partnership with the RNLI, will use the £10m to restore the Grade II* listed pier structure – currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register – to make it safe and usable once again.

The £65 million One Collection Programme culminated with the public opening of the Hawking Building, a vast and innovative facility where the Science Museum Group is caring for the nation’s science collection. Over 300,000 historic objects have been carefully studied, digitised, and moved into the new purpose-built building at the Science and Innovation Park in Wiltshire, which is now open for guided tours, school, and research visits.

The first behind-the-scenes public tours of this building begin today, with tour dates in 2025 now available to book, allowing visitors to get up close to the Science Museum Group’s world-class collection of objects from science, technology, engineering, and medicine. Led by an expert guide, visitors on the guided tours will encounter incredible, world-changing objects in their new home and discover their stories, while also enjoying stunning views of this vast facility and seeing Science Museum Group staff at work caring for the collection.

An unprecedented hoard of coins, from the time of the Norman Conquest of England, has been acquired for the nation by the South West Heritage Trust thanks to major funding including from the National Lottery and Art Fund. It consists of 2,584 silver pennies from the period c.
1066–68, likely buried for safekeeping in the turmoil of the Conquest. The hoard has been valued at £4.3 million making it the highest-value treasure find ever. The hoard comes from a turning point in English history. It covers the transition from Saxon to Norman rule was marked by 1066 and was probably deposited for safekeeping during rebellions in the
southwest against the new Norman king, William I (‘the Conqueror’). It is famously recorded that ‘Exeter was the first town to fight for its liberty’ against Norman rule. Represented on just under half the coins is Harold II (1066) the last crowned Saxon king of England. Just over half feature William I (r. 1066–87).

Scotland’s Treasure Trove system is not keeping pace with changes such as the growing backlog of finds and the museum funding crisis, a review has found.

The system for reporting treasure and archaeological finds in Scotland is undergoing its first comprehensive review for more than 20 years. Commissioned by the King’s and Lord Treasurer’s Remembrancer, who is responsible for overseeing the system, the review’s findings were published this week following a consultation earlier this year.
