SUNDAY SOCIAL HIKE - WIMBLEDON COMMON CIRCULAR

Join us this coming Sunday 24th March for our next social walk.
•
This month it’s Wimbledon Common Circular, starting from Putney Station.
•
An 8.4km loop around Wimbledon Common plus a 20 minute walk from Putney Station. The walk will be about 2.5 hours in total.
•
We will be getting the 10:50am train from Waterloo arriving at Putney at 11:05am. The walk starts at 11:05am from Putney Station.
•
On the way back we will stop at a pub for lunch between Wimbledon Common and Putney for those that fancy a refuel!
•
Come solo or with mates! Dogs are welcome too! This is also a great opportunity for you to ask us any questions you have about health, fitness and nutrition, meet new friends and get moving in the fresh air.

We often think of stress as all ‘bad’ but as with everything in life we need balance, so some kinds of stress can be ‘good’.

Hormetic stress makes us more resilient and robust, it makes us adapt and become stronger.

Some of the benefits of conditioning ourselves with hormetic stress are a healthy immune system, resistance to injury/disease, healthy aging/longevity, enhanced learning and increased fertility.

The biggest take home being we are living an evolutionary mismatch.

Ben talked about all the things that can decrease our gut health. You can see 21 things we spoke about on our stories.

But what can we do to RESTORE OUR GUT HEALTH?

Of the 10 things Ben spoke about the NUMBER 1 thing was to BECOME AN ANTI-FRAGILE HUMAN.

What does this mean? It means building more physical and mental resilience, challenging ourselves, building more muscle, adopting better ‘meal hygiene’ practices, finding ways to cope with stress, being more mindful, not getting attached to being ‘sick’, becoming more parasympathetic and finding our PURPOSE.

HAPPY HIPS
•
Most often it’s not more stretching that your hips need it’s STRENGTHENING.
•
Really that applies to the whole body but today we’re talking about hips as it’s an area we see a lot of struggles with, mostly due to lack of use and not enough movement variety but made worse by sitting in chairs a lot, cycling for long periods (with weak hips), treadmill running, our emotions and more.
•
When the ‘core’ muscles (think like a cylinder between the diaphragm and pelvic floor) aren’t functioning at optimum something has to take over to stabilise the spine (the body is super good at adapting in anyway possible) and that is often the hip flexors (more on this in future posts).
•
HAVE A GO at this ISOMETRIC BOTTOMS UP SPLIT SQUAT to see how strong your hips are and how your ‘core’ is functioning.
•
HOW - Set up in this half kneeling position and try to hover your back knee 1cm off the floor and HOLD.
•
FEEL - A LOT in the front of the back leg. It should never feel easier (find more ‘tension’ if it does!) you just get stronger and better at holding the position.
•
Try to keep RIBS over PELVIS, shoulders stable and face relaxed.
•
