I LOVE balconies! It's not the architectural element that fascinates me, but that merge of private yet public space and nowhere is it more evident than in Athens. Balconies seem to play so many different roles in Athenian lives. Remember to lift up your eyes when wandering the city ;)

When in Athens, make sure to walk by this wonder from 1994 - countless sheets of glass piled on top of each other create this striking giant! Costas Varotsos spent 6 years to complete this 12m-high sculpture. Didn't get to see it at night, but they say it's even more sticking after dark..

Amorgos got a Chora too! Only this one is hidden in the mountains. Tiny, authentic and thus very atmospheric. I can see why my German Amorgos expert told me I had to see it for myself :)

The monastery of is what pops up when you google island. So I googled more and decided why bother searching for a bus when it's only a 5km walk from where I live! And so I walked what must have been a million steps up and down, stones and gravel.. I hope my knees will forgive me, as I didn't have the patience to wait for the return bus and walked all the way back too :D

And so the Monastery:

🥾 Its 300 meters above the sea level right in a giant rock (you climb down..a lot, and then climb up, not as much though, but enough).
📖 Was constructed 812-813 AD
⛏ Measures 5 meters in width, 40 meters and length and 8 stories high
🍸 If you take the right steps, leads you to a seating room where monks offer visitors Psimeni - a drink of raki with honey, cinnamon and clove and stunning views through the windowns

A few things to know once there:

📷 No photos are allowed inside
👕 There is a dress code to enter - long trousers for men, and long skirts for women, shoulders must be covered too (a big beach scarf on shorts did the skirt part for me :) )
👛 There is no entry fee

When a person who's been traveling to Greece for 40 years tells you island is their favourite island, you are sure that these 4 hours on yet another ferry are well worth it!

The trip includes:
🌊 Some seriously gorgeous blue harbours
🛳 A really old ferry, repaired every year and still roaring
🌬Even on a sunny calm day the final leg of the trip, just after Koufonisia, gets bumpy. Have a jacket and some pants, the wind can get very cold, and of course, skip a heavier meal if big waves make your stomach turn :D

PS. The very same solo german traveler has visited Amorgos island some 30 times. 'Just 3 nights?' she said. 'You better make the most out of it!'. And she wrote down a smart and efficient way to explore the island 👏

A 30 min bus ride and I stepped out in village for a number 4 hike I've chosen for myself. Not that I have much experience when it come to hiking, but following the track was like playing a lottery, you never knew if the turn you just took was the right one, a few dozen additional path markers would have been very useful. BUT with views like these, I could not care less. Lost the path completely half way through and made it just in time for the next bus back to . Another great day on ! Ps. here is the track, maybe you will do better than I did ;) https://www.naxostrek.com/en/monopatia/naxos-hiking-trail-4/

Now if it's the second year in the row, even the very same weekend, I say it's fair we call it our 'Traditional Kayak Trip of July' 🛶 Šventoji was relatively easy, a perfect test for our new kayak, which proved to be quite difficult to manoeuvre.. anyways we:

📍 Covered some 50 km starting in Dusetos and reaching Užpaliai 3 days later.
💉 Fed countless mosquitos and other blood sucking demons (what a bad timing for the mosquito spray to end..)
🔧 Got 1 minor puncture (duck tape fix worked beautifully!)
💪 Witnessed eagle's & hawk's fight in the sky
☀️ Got a perfect recharge

PS. Any recommendations on which river we should explore the next time?

A small pot, a mini gas stove and enough food for 3 days for 2 people, which must also fit in our ..? What real food do you guys cook outdoors? There will be some village shops on the route, very basic though. And please, don't say nuts - I'm 50% braces still :) Dried & canned meat, buckwheat, oats..what else? :)

📷 beautiful morning walks in the old city (daily steps aren't gonna count themselves..)
🥵 no distractions from work at least until 4 pm - this week heat reached 31C, which is crazy for Lithuania! Its just impossible to be outside after 11am
🌊 so many options for beach within 10km radius

Work, sightseeing, tan..time to head home before Klaipeda spoils me completely :)

Now this is a proper off the beaten path spot! is Lithuania's border with , yes, that small isolated part of Russia in Europe. The bridge leads straight into the city and though on Lithuanian side we've got bushes and really nothing to see, well, except of the other side, which so close and casual you can almost wave to the people walking by the river! ..not sure how the border guards would take it though, yet how cool is that?!

A noisy night with frogs and down the river to . Small towns have that calm vibe and get all cozy and what not, BUT they also tend to have crazy weird second hand shops where we landed 2 original posters!🤘 Yeah, even when a building looks abandoned, it's always a good idea to give it a closer look, you never know what you''ll find 🧐

With just 1 of the 2 vaccines done, we are still travelling locally. This time we took the road along the river which landed us in . So cute, so old and so uncommon in Lithuania for a town to stretch on such a tall hill, we don't have that many hills to start off with :) And.. Vilkija has its own tiny old rusty ferry too!! 🤘

🥄 made lunch while waiting out some of the rain at an abandoned farm house
⚠️ broke 1 whiskey bottle by dropping my bike ON the side with the bag with the glass bottle..my load did became lighter :)
🌧 biked the final 20 km in a soaking rain testing the last bits of will

50km from and we were back in by night fall with a dry set of clothes waiting for us in the car.

What a trip and what a wonderful route! This part of Lithuania is simply incredible. Any suggestions on where we could go next? 🧐

Having all my things tied to the back of my bicycle felt tricky at first, especially on a dirt road to the island, but otherwise, I thought it will be harder. While sleeping in a tent 🥶 - now that was COLD, I felt tremendously thankful for the sunny morning :)

I guess I would have been a bit less excited about the castle if not the 3 months lock down within the municipality, which forbade leaving even the city :D Anyways, I don't know enough to comment on exhibitions inside and the historic significance of the place, but climbing up the old tower and pretending to lock my brother up in a human shape iron frame was definitely fun!

Just before the Easter we packed our new kayak, wanted to try it out on a lake, weather was perfect! Little did we know that Lithuanian lakes were still in their 'ice mood' :) Oh well, at least we got to travel-train one of our cats, who behaved very responsibly when off the leash :)

Tell me, human, when will the ice melt and we can finally go kayaking on a lake?
