4 Hidden Gems of Bath besides the Roman Pump Room

Jane Austen Centre

Explore the history of one of England’s most beloved writers. Between 1801 and 1806 this Georgian townhouse served as her home as well as a backdrop in two of her novels: Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. The Jane Austen Centre recounts the tale of her time in Bath and the impact it had on her life and writing. Inside the centre is the Regency Tea Room which is open daily for afternoon or cream teas and other light lunches and refreshments.

Bath Abbey

Step into a place of worship that has lasted since 757 AD and inside you will find 635 memorials. Most of the 635 memorials commemorate the lives of people living between the 1700s and 1800s. Walk upon the newly relaid 891 ledgerstones that make up the floor. Adorning the walls are the decorative windows commissioned to recreate scenes from the Bible and other important religious events.

Pultney Bridge

This monument of Georgian architecture is one of only 4 bridges in the world adorned with shops across the full length of the bridge. This was the architectural work of Robert Ada, in 1769 and named after Frances Pultney, a man who had owned a lot of land in the surrounding area and hoped to rival John Wood’s town with a town of his own on the western side of the city. Today the bridge seems small and quaint but at the time of its construction it was a technological and artistic marvel. If the bridge does not catch your eye, the many shops embedded inside surely will.

Prior Park

This inviting garden was envisioned and developed by Ralph Allen, a Bath entrepreneur and philanthropist. With the help of architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown the seeds of these winding garden paths were planted. Within the grounds are a thatched cottage, icehouse and the feet of a gothic temple. Escape the rush of modern life and relax in an intimately constructed park
