Replaced the manila mooring lines with 15' of 3/4" eye spliced lines today. The old ones are likely destined to be recycled for use in a marlinspike project such as fenders.

Winter checks made. The bilge is dry and the batteries are still charged. All in all I'd say , all's well.

The Tugboat Dianne. Originally built in 1936 as the Constance J. The vessel had been well maintained as in service as a work boat for 81 years. The vessel had been replaced by a 2017 tug and has been made a gift to save her heritage from the scrap yard as she remains fully operational and could remain in service for other duties.

The marina experienced a deep freeze this winter. Sailors and staff cannot recall the last time such an event occurred out here on this stretch of the Snake.

On the bright side, I was able to stand on the ice to mount the outboard.

"The Knot Much is not much, but she'll make 5 knots."

Today saw yet another "red flag warning" for the region.

Winds of 26.5 mph gusting to 39.1 mph were observed. Not a good day to cast off.

And now, a word from the ship's library.

I have acquired a number or texts on sailing, seamanship and the maritime trade, however I have found The Complete Sailor is one of the best resources on the shelf. The book is presented is a simple straight forward manner making it easy to read and reference.

The illustrations have been described as enchanting as they capture the feel of sailing through the ages. However they are also very practical as they show every dynamic discussed from multiple perspectives to make the point clear.

Given the price on Amazon, I would say it is the absolute best penny you can spend.

The Complete Sailor takes the reader from the first sail to a mastery of small-boat handling. Weaving his writing around 600 drawings by noted marine illustrator Kelly Mulford, David Seidman has created a book in which each double-page spread invites the eye and communicates volumes of informatio...

The silt bar is much easier to cross in 2 foot waves.

The Knot Much spread her wings and set her sails for the first time in years today. She made 4.6 knots until conditions forced me to drop her main and finally her jib. She made 3.6 kts under power into the wind and heavy rains down from her usual 4.4 kts.

Winds of 12-26 miles per hour will turn the ordinarily placid Clearwater River into a terrifying sea of 2-3 foot waves, heeling forces, white caps and the occasional spray crashing over the bow.

Tillers are confusing in close quarters.

If a small boat gets stuck in the mud leaving the marina, it is shallow enough to get out and push. Also fins make decent "snow shoes" on spongy silt.

Note when using manila rope for docklines it pays to remember that natural fibe rope expands when wet. IE if it was tight on the cleat before it rained good luck getting it free after.
