Before you leave for Mt. Whitney, HST or for any hike/climb, designate TWO contact persons (who are not going with you) who know your entire itinerary. Inform where you’re going, your travel plans and check back with them.
It is very important that you put those two persons in contact with each other. If an emergency occurs, one contact can initiate a rescue while the other can be in communication with you.
You may feel you don’t need to be accountable for your time on the mountain but it’s imperative you do especially if solo. If you have family and friends, believe me, they care about you so care about yourself and let them know your plans. It’s the best insurance you can give yourself.
1. Give date and text time of your departure from home. Give flight itinerary of arrival and departure.
2. While doing a pack check before leaving, take a picture of the gear you intend to use (open up that tent).
Take a picture of you wearing the clothing gear you’ll be taking. Take a selfie headshot. Give these pictures to your contacts. This will help to identify you in case SAR is looking for you.
3. Have readily accessible either on you or the front compartment of your pack (NOT the brain of the pack as it can get ripped off in a fall): your ID, medical and prescription info and your two emergency contacts in case you are unable to speak.
4. Give your contacts the destination of the area you are visiting along with Inyo County Sheriff's Office phone, 760-878-0383 (for Mt. Whitney) or Tulare County Sheriff’s Office (for HST), 559-591-5810.
5. Give your contacts a map of your planned route on the trail with name of TH (trailhead), start date/approx. time and what is your exit date/approx. time. If you are renting a car, give the make, model and license plate, color of car, what rental agency you are renting from and where the car will be parked (at the Portal or other TH parking lots). TAKE A PICTURE of the car and send to your two contacts.
6. Check-in if plans change.
7. Bring a two-way satellite communication device like an InReach or Spot in the unlikely situation where emergency help is required. KNOW HOW TO USE IT, MAKE SURE CURRENT SOFTWARE IS UPDATED AND TEST IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR YOUR TRIP.
8. Tell your two contacts if they don’t hear from you by “end of day” of your exit date, to call the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office.
End of day means around the time most people go to bed NOT 1 hour after you are due out.
People regularly think they can hike out by 3 pm but usually it’s 10 pm or after. In many cases, they end up sleeping overnight due to exhaustion. Ask other campers around you if you can use their satellite device to update loved ones if you do not possess one. Most of these overdue hikers/climbers return to the TH the next day by late morning/early afternoon.
9. Upon exiting TH, check-in with your two contacts to let them know you’re safely off the trail.
10. Check-in with your two contacts when you arrive home.
Own your time in the backcountry.
Summiting is optional.
Returning to the TH is not.
