On May 16, 2024, Commissioner Joseph Boschulte of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism gave a keynote presentation at the USVI Hotel & Tourism Association Annual Meeting.

To begin the presentation, Commissioner Boschulte shared that Expedia.com recently ranked the St. Thomas as the No. 1 trending domestic summer destination, a testament to the department's cross-collaborative efforts with its local partners.

In addition, the Commissioner shared tourism department updates, including cruise and airlift numbers that are trending to surpass pre- and post-COVID records, specifically noting March’s 26% year-over-year increase in airlift arrivals. The audience, consisting of members representing various businesses within the hospitality industry throughout the territory, previewed marketing initiatives, new brand updates, and promotional videos used internationally to showcase and attract visitors to the destination.

“As partners in tourism, we are always delighted to partake in the Hotel & Tourism Association’s annual meeting to share exciting updates regarding the territory's progress and the department’s ongoing efforts to continue pushing the USVI as a preeminent Caribbean destination,” shares Commissioner Boschulte.

The single-day event, hosted at the Ritz Carlton, St. Thomas, is the annual meeting for association members to review the annual report and create forward-looking initiatives. Highlights from the meeting included dialogue on progress for the territory in the hospitality space adding to
Commissioner Boschulte’s presentation with discussions around technological growth, artificial intelligence, workforce training, guest experiences, and destination authenticity.

"The USVI Hotel & Tourism Association is proud to have a strong collaborative public/private partnership with Commissioner of Tourism Boschulte and his team since the beginning of the Bryan administration,” said Lisa Hamilton, USVI Hotel and Tourism Association President. “Since taking the helm at the Department of Tourism, Commissioner Boschulte has spearheaded several projects and initiatives promoting the U.S. Virgin Islands regionally and globally. USVI to be featured on Hot Ones Caribbean

(Press Release) – This summer, the U.S. Virgin Islands will be starring in Hot Ones Caribbean, the Caribbean version of the wildly popular US-based web series, produced by Complex Media.

Hot Ones Caribbean is part of a multifaceted destination marketing agreement between the USVI Department of Tourism and TEMPO Networks that includes content production, festival promotions and localized talent development designed to spark visitor interest in the USVI as a vacation destination. Hot Ones has won the 2018 Shorty Award for Best Web Series and the 2019 Webby Award for Food & Drinks.

Joseph Boschulte, Commissioner of Tourism for the USVI, said, “We are proud to be a supporting partner of TEMPO Networks as it continues to expand and share entertainment centered in Caribbean culture.” TEMPO Networks currently broadcasts in 24 Caribbean islands, with approximately 5 million viewers as well as in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut on cablevision.

TEMPO has also recently added to its current distribution platforms an over-the-top (OTT) streaming service, TEMPO+, that houses its 24/7 linear TV platform together with a vast array of video-on-demand Caribbean lifestyle content. The streaming service is a one-of-a-kind destination for all things Caribbean, including travel, music, cuisine, film and is accessible everywhere, on all devices and on all leading platforms.

As part of the partnership with TEMPO Networks, the USVI Department of Tourism’s participation in the Hot Ones Caribbean aims to target both the general market and the Caribbean diaspora market.
In addition, the launch of a Win-a-Trip sweepstakes will be offered to viewers of the content to win trips to the USVI. “This partnership supports USVI’s tourism innovation, focusing on the development of the single most important marketing tool in today’s competitive tourism landscape – content,” said Frederick A. Morton, Jr., founder, chairman and chief executive officer of TEMPO Networks.
“TEMPO is unmatched in the development of Caribbean content aimed at attracting regional and international visitors to our beautiful shores and I can’t begin to express how excited I am to partner with the USVI Department of Tourism in this ground-breaking initiative to place a spotlight on the destination I call home,” he added.
Hot Ones Caribbean will mirror the format of the U.S. iteration, with celebrity guests, born in the USVI or with significant USVI connections, being invited to eat chicken wings with increasingly spicier Caribbean hot sauces as they answer probing questions. The show will spotlight the breathtaking beauty of the islands, as well as its extraordinary culture and talent.

This season, the show features USVI Hot Ones such as Julian Jackson, Alexandra Swayne, Theron Thomas, DJ Avalanche, Alwyn "Daddy Jones" Baptiste, Gov. Albert Bryan, Senator Donna Frett-Gregory, Commissioner Joe Boschulte, as well as TEMPO Networks founder & CEO, Frederick Morton, Jr.

The U.S. Virgin Islands is celebrating with an historic commemoration of its 175th Emancipation Day, which marks the abolition of slavery in the former Danish West Indies some 17 years prior to the “Juneteenth” declaration of freedom in 1865 on the mainland.

Honoring the U.S. Virgin Islands as the “birthplace of emancipation in the USA”, the 175th Emancipation Commemoration includes a series of educational programs and cultural events designed to inspire Virgin Islanders to renew and strengthen their commitment to honor their ancestors and forebears, such as John Gottlieb, known as “General Buddhoe”, and others who successfully organized a revolt on the morning of July 3, 1848, and demanded that enslaved persons be immediately declared free.

“I had to correct my nephew who thought that President Abraham Lincoln freed us. I said, ‘Listen, nobody freed us. We freed ourselves here in the Virgin Islands. The same spirit that drove General Buddhoe to emancipate his people is within us still,’” said Gov. Albert Bryan Jr., who last year signed an executive order establishing the 175th Emancipation Commemoration Committee and appointed a nine-member panel to plan the celebrations.

Freedom Week, which began June 25, 2023, with interdenominational ecumenical services held across the Virgin Islands, included a host of events in the Territory to foster community engagement and educate attendees about the Virgin Islands’ rich history and culture.

Activities culminate on Monday, July 3, with the official ceremony to be held in Frederiksted, St. Croix. Local and national dignitaries, including representatives from the U.S. Department of the Interior and Denmark, will be in attendance to participate in the ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m.

Nationally recognized health policy and equity advocate and social justice change agent, Roslyn Brock, who is the Chief Global Equity Officer for Abt Associates; Founder and CEO of Equity Partnership Strategies, LLC, a racial equity consulting firm; and Chairman Emeritus, National Board of Directors, NAACP, will deliver the keynote address.

“The 175th anniversary of emancipation in the Virgin Islands is an event of incredible historical significance not only for the U.S. Virgin Islands, but also for the United States of America. This is a unique opportunity for us to exhibit our extreme gratitude and great pride towards not only the ‘Keepers of the Flame’ whose contributions since 1848 demand community praise and recognition, but also our ‘Living Legends of Culture’, Virgin Islanders who have contributed immensely to the achievement, development, and enhancement of the U.S. Virgin Islands,” said Carol Burke, Chairwoman of the 175th Emancipation Commemoration Committee and former Senator of the USVI Legislature.

Freedom Week events included “Living Legends of Culture” receptions and art exhibits on all three islands of the Territory; Living Legends of Culture presentations and receptions on St. Thomas and St. Croix; art and music exhibitions and festivals; and the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church Commemorative Holy Mass on July 2 on St. Croix.

In addition to the official Emancipation Day ceremony on July 3, which will be simulcast, broadcast and live streamed, activities include the Fort to Fort Freedom Ride, the Fort to Fort Freedom Walk, the Fort to Fort Freedom Race, and the Emancipation Day Parade, which starts in “Freedom City”. There will also be a Tribute to the Ancestors with a Libation ceremony, Emancipation Luncheon and fireworks. The “Unshackled” Music Festival begins at 8:30 p.m. that evening in “Freedom City”.

Sponsors of the 175th Emancipation Commemoration include The Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort, Cruzan Rum, Diageo USVI’s Captain Morgan, FirstBank, Royal Caribbean Group, Southland Gaming of the Virgin Islands, Tropical Shipping, and the Virgin Islands Port Authority (VIPA). WTJX-FM and Viya are also providing support.

This year, U.S. Virgin Islands residents and visitors will not need to wait until another USVI Carnival or holiday season begins in the Territory to buy and enjoy products made right here in the USVI. Instead, they can get these products this summer. On June 30, 2023, the VI Council on the Arts (VICA) and the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority’s (VIEDA) Enterprise Zone Commission (EZC) will continue its partnership to support small manufacturers in the USVI with the kickoff of its inaugural “Sunset Sip & Shop” event at the “Made in the USVI” kiosk located at the Vendors Plaza on St. Thomas, USVI. Both VICA and the VIEDA’s EZC, which originated the “Made in the USVI” initiative in the Territory in 2018, will host the “Sunset Sip & Shop” events this summer to attract and encourage USVI residents and visitors to buy locally-made merchandise. The “Sunset Sip & Shop” events will be held in the summer from 4 PM to 7 PM from June 30 through August 25, 2023. The “Sunset Sip & Shop” events will feature products from within a specific category or industry. The first category of products to be featured at the kickoff event on June 30 will be merchandise from the spa industry. Participating vendors include LaVella, JD Natlady’s Creations, For the Love of Sugar, and Hygge Suds.
The “Sunset Sip & Shop” events will also include a cash bar, prizes, special deals locally-made merchandise and free entertainment. As the Sunset Sip & Shop events are scheduled and confirmed, an announcement will be shared with the public.
